Starting from considerations about cultural modernity and the Enlightenment, this paper establishes a relationship between environmental rights and the anthropocentric tradition of Western ethics. In a critical view, it speculates on what environmentalism could be within an ethical horizon which guaranteed nature its own rights.Partindo de considerações sobre a modernidade cultural e o Esclarecimento, o texto estabelece uma relação entre direito ambiental e a tradição antropocêntrica da ética ocidental. Numa perspectiva crítica, passa depois a especular sobre o que poderia ser ambientalismo num horizonte ético em que se reconhecesse um direito próprio à natureza

Ser e sentido: o paradoxo do sofrimento

Taking as an opportunity and philosophical basis of the work of Arthur Schopenhauer, the article presents a reflection on the paradoxical nature of suffering in human existence. Despite its undeniable positivity - only suffering is actually real, well being is always impermanent cessation of suffering - it is absurd, and is implanted in the ontological root of human finitude.Tomando como ensejo e base filoso fica a obra de Arthur Schopenhauer, o artigo elabora uma reflexa o sobre a natureza paradoxal do sofrimento na existência humana. A despeito de sua incontornável positividade - só o sofrimento é efetivamente real, bem estar é sempre a impermanente cessação do sofrimento -, ele é absurdo, e se implanta na raiz ontológica da finitude humana

Abysses of human perversity

The present article elaborates a reflection on ethical questions, having as background the system of the unique thought of Arthur Schopenhauer. The central question is constituted by the philosophical problem of radical evil, a figure of extreme evil, which is rejected as an authentically human possibility in Kant's practical philosophy. The figure of the evil joy (Schadenfreude), as outlined in Schopenhauer's ethics - illustrated in the article with examples of universal literature - exhibits a type of character capable of transcending the limits of selfishness and configuring a mode of pure evil, analogous to the case of radical evil
