    Local Percolation Probabilities for a Natural Sandstone

    Local percolation probabilities are used to characterize the connectivity in porous and heterogeneous media. Together with local porosity distributions they allow to predict transport properties \cite{hil91d}. While local porosity distributions are readily obtained, measurements of the local percolation probabilities are more difficult and have not been attempted previously.     Rescaling Relations between Two- and Three-dimensional Local Porosity Distributions for Natural and Artificial Porous Media

    Local porosity distributions for a three-dimensional porous medium and local porosity distributions for a two-dimensional plane-section through the medium are generally different. However, for homogeneous and isotropic media having finite correlation-lengths, a good degree of correspondence between the two sets of local porosity distributions can be obtained by rescaling lengths, and the mapping associating corresponding distributions can be found from two-dimensional observations alone. The agreement between associated distributions is good as long as the linear extent of the measurement cells involved is somewhat larger than the correlation length, and it improves as the linear extent increases. A simple application of the central limit theorem shows that there must be a correspondence in the limit of very large measurement cells, because the distributions from both sets approach normal distributions. A normal distribution has two independent parameters: the mean and the variance. If the sample is large enough, LPDs from both sets will have the same mean. Therefore corresponding distributions are found by matching variances of two- and three-dimensional local porosity distributions. The variance can be independently determined from correlation functions. Equating variances leads to a scaling relation for lengths in this limit. Three particular systems are examined in order to show that this scaling behavior persists at smaller length-scales.Comment: 15 PostScript figures, LaTeX, To be published in Physica

    Effects of Risedronate in Runx2 Overexpressing Mice, an Animal Model for Evaluation of Treatment Effects on Bone Quality and Fractures

    Young mice overexpressing Runx2 specifically in cells of the osteoblastic lineage failed to gain bone mass and exhibited a dramatic increase in bone resorption, leading to severe osteopenia and spontaneous vertebral fractures. The objective of the current study was to determine whether treatment with a bisphosphonate (risedronate, Ris), which reduces fractures in postmenopausal as well as in juvenile osteoporosis, was able to improve bone quality and reduce vertebral fractures in mice overexpressing Runx2. Four-week-old female Runx2 mice received Ris at 2 and 10 μg/kg subcutaneously twice a week for 12 weeks. Runx2 and wild-type mice received vehicle (Veh) as control. We measured the number of new fractures by X-ray and bone mineral density (BMD) by DEXA. We evaluated bone quality by histomorphometry, micro-CT, and Fourier transform infrared imaging (FTIRI). Ris at 20 μg/kg weekly significantly reduced the average number of new vertebral fractures compared to controls. This was accompanied by significantly increased BMD, increased trabecular bone volume, and reduced bone remodeling (seen in indices of bone resorption and formation) in the vertebrae and femoral metaphysis compared to Runx2 Veh. At the femur, Ris also increased cortical thickness. Changes in collagen cross-linking seen on FTIRI confirmed that Runx2 mice have accelerated bone turnover and showed that Ris affects the collagen cross-link ratio at both forming and resorbing sites. In conclusion, young mice overexpressing Runx2 have high bone turnover-induced osteopenia and spontaneous fractures. Ris at 20 μg/kg weekly induced an increase in bone mass, changes in bone microarchitecture, and decreased vertebral fractures

    Antibodies to Serine Proteases in the Antiphospholipid Syndrome

    It is generally accepted that the major autoantigen for antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is β2-glycoprotein I (β2GPI). However, a recent study has revealed that some aPL bind to certain conformational epitope(s) on β2GPI shared by the homologous enzymatic domains of several serine proteases involved in hemostasis and fibrinolysis. Importantly, some serine protease–reactive aPL correspondingly hinder anticoagulant regulation and resolution of clots. These results extend several early findings of aPL binding to other coagulation factors and provide a new perspective about some aPL in terms of binding specificities and related functional properties in promoting thrombosis. Moreover, a recent immunological and pathological study of a panel of human IgG monoclonal aPL showed that aPL with strong binding to thrombin promote in vivo venous thrombosis and leukocyte adherence, suggesting that aPL reactivity with thrombin may be a good predictor for pathogenic potentials of aPL

    Spontaneous coronary artery dissection presenting as an ischaemic stroke in a middle-aged man with anti-cardiolipin antibodies: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Cerebrovascular disease is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Ischemic stroke is the most common manifestation, encompassing a wide variety of causative mechanisms. We present the case of a middle-aged male patient with spontaneous coronary artery dissection in the presence of anti-cardiolipin antibodies, leading to left ventricular thrombus and presenting with stroke.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 56-year-old Caucasian man presented with dysarthria and right-sided weakness. There was a history of chest pain with autonomic symptoms four days earlier. Examination revealed right-sided hemiparesis. Electrocardiogram showed sinus rhythm with anterior Q waves. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed large left parietal and smaller multiple cerebral infarcts. Echocardiogram showed anterior wall and apical akinesis with a large mural thrombus. Anti-cardiolipin antibodies immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M were strongly positive. Coronary angiography showed dissection of the mid left anterior descending artery with normal flow down the distal vessel. He was treated conservatively with anticoagulation and secondary prevention. He was in good health when seen in clinic four months later.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We highlight the importance of a comprehensive approach at obtaining the correct diagnosis, input of different specialities and the fact that the presence of anti-cardiolipin antibodies is associated with coronary artery dissection in a middle-aged male patient whose presentation was stroke.</p
