You there! What are you doing in my compost heap? There\u27s never any honest answer to such questions, not at age nine, not when the truth is more embarrassing than a lie, particularly not when the old lady\u27s glasses-magnified eyes were that huge and that impaling blue..

The Effects of Climate on South African Livelihoods

Climate variability affects countries, regions, communities, and individuals for extended periods of time--- in most cases the climate in question has been varying for many centuries. In the southern region of Africa, climate variability has become commonplace (Morton, 2007). With fluctuating amounts of precipitation, from droughts to floods, the livelihoods of farmers and small-share agriculturists are challenged each season due to lack of knowledge and unpredictability. Low yields lead to higher prices within markets, effecting all growers and consumers within the region. Lack of information and understanding both on the scientific and civilian sides of climate variability leads to hardships both ecologically and economically. South Africa, Kenya, and Lesotho have been noted as countries with the most variable climates. These countries are reliant on subsistence farming and agriculture, meaning that most of their food resources are attained from what farmers are able to produce with the available resources. This work discusses how climate variability effects crop growth in three unique areas of Africa

Utilization of selected biorenewable resources: solubilization of lignocellulosics and conjugation of soybean oil

In recent years, concern has risen over the use of fossil fuels due to their contribution to global warming, and to our dependence on imports of petroleum from nations that could pose a threat to national security. As a result, it has become increasingly important to develop technologies to replace fossil fuel based products with biorenewable alternatives. In this thesis nearly quantitative solubilization of lignocellulosic materials using phosphite esters has been realized, and is presented as a potential pretreatment for production of fermentable sugars for use in manufacturing commodity chemicals, specifically ethanol. Water solubilization of lignocellulosics using phosphite esters will enhance digestibility by disrupting the lignocellulose structure, changing cellulose morphology, and cleaving some glycosidic bonds. In a second project, soybean oil, which contains un-conjugated polyunsaturated fatty acid esters, is isomerized into oil containing conjugated polyunsaturates. The process is carried out under photochemical conditions using iodine as a catalyst in a hexanes solution to achieve 99% conjugation. The resulting conjugated soybean oil is demonstrated to have enhanced drying properties for use in alkyd resins

Includes a letter of approval from O.R. Johnson to Walter Miller.Typescript.More than one hundred years ago people began the practice of preserving green feed in silos. In this country the first silo above ground was built in 1875, in Michigan. From this beginning the use of the silo has spread rapidly until today it may be considered a well-established feature in American farm economy, not only in dairy section, but in general, where any kind of live-stock farming is practiced. While silos and silage have been in general use for a number of years there are several important questions that do not seem to be fully and satisfactorily answered. A series of experiments were carried on by the Dairy Department of the Missouri Agricultural College during the winters of 1913-1914 and 1914-1915. The work for 1913-1914 was carried on by D.G. Magruder and the results may be found in his thesis for that year. The work for this thesis is a continuation of that started by Magruder, but includes other problems which were not taken up in his experiments.Includes bibliographical reference
