    Individuals with Hearing Impairment in Positions of Leadership

    This investigation examines scholarly literature in the study of the deaf and hard of hearing. The purpose of this examination is to locate the literature that focuses on hearing impairments (HI), and to identify methods or procedures that focus on individuals with hearing impairments in positions of leadership. During this investigation it was found that there is no abundance of literature that specifically focused on the study of individuals with hearing impairments in the positions of leadership. The study then shifted its focus to related studies within the field of hearing impairment that were relevant to understanding the challenges that an individual with a hearing impairment encounter, benefits of new technology, implications of mainstreaming, and the importance of rehabilitative/habilitative intervention teams. When following research investigation takes place, the hypothesis will be that there are correlations between leadership skills and extracurricular activities in which children with hearing impairments participate

    Fractionation of Hydrogen Isotopes by Sulfate- and Nitrate-Reducing Bacteria.

    Hydrogen atoms from water and food are incorporated into biomass during cellular metabolism and biosynthesis, fractionating the isotopes of hydrogen-protium and deuterium-that are recorded in biomolecules. While these fractionations are often relatively constant in plants, large variations in the magnitude of fractionation are observed for many heterotrophic microbes utilizing different central metabolic pathways. The correlation between metabolism and lipid δ(2)H provides a potential basis for reconstructing environmental and ecological parameters, but the calibration dataset has thus far been limited mainly to aerobes. Here we report on the hydrogen isotopic fractionations of lipids produced by nitrate-respiring and sulfate-reducing bacteria. We observe only small differences in fractionation between oxygen- and nitrate-respiring growth conditions, with a typical pattern of variation between substrates that is broadly consistent with previously described trends. In contrast, fractionation by sulfate-reducing bacteria does not vary significantly between different substrates, even when autotrophic and heterotrophic growth conditions are compared. This result is in marked contrast to previously published observations and has significant implications for the interpretation of environmental hydrogen isotope data. We evaluate these trends in light of metabolic gene content of each strain, growth rate, and potential flux and reservoir-size effects of cellular hydrogen, but find no single variable that can account for the differences between nitrate- and sulfate-respiring bacteria. The emerging picture of bacterial hydrogen isotope fractionation is therefore more complex than the simple correspondence between δ(2)H and metabolic pathway previously understood from aerobes. Despite the complexity, the large signals and rich variability of observed lipid δ(2)H suggest much potential as an environmental recorder of metabolism

    Building Resilient Business Students: Faculty as Servant Leaders

    The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal cadence of life. These disruptions affected students in higher education in many ways as well increasing the stress and anxiety levels of college students and having a considerable negative impact on their mental health. Business students were not exempt from the negative mental health impact of COVID-19. Aware of the stress its students are experiencing, higher education can play a role in creating environments which support learning and the development of skills to rebound from that adversity. This is particularly true for business schools who are also monitoring how business itself is being affected and conducted during this pandemic Business schools are not only positioned to support the mental health of their students but also to prepare them to be successful in a business world that is transforming at the same time (Krishnamurthy, 2020). One important way universities can support their students and enhance the students’ positive response to adversity is to focus on the development of resilience. The problem this article will address is how business school faculty can help students develop resiliency so that they can be successful now and in their future careers. Specifically, how faculty exhibiting servant leadership characteristics can improve the resilience of their students and better prepare them to respond to adversities like the COVID-19 pandemic

    One Health in food safety and security education: Subject matter outline for a curricular framework.

    Educating students in the range of subjects encompassing food safety and security as approached from a One Health perspective requires consideration of a variety of different disciplines and the interrelationships among disciplines. The Western Institute for Food Safety and Security developed a subject matter outline to accompany a previously published One Health in food safety and security curricular framework. The subject matter covered in this outline encompasses a variety of topics and disciplines related to food safety and security including effects of food production on the environment. This subject matter outline should help guide curriculum development and education in One Health in food safety and security and provides useful information for educators, researchers, students, and public policy-makers facing the inherent challenges of maintaining and/or developing safe and secure food supplies without destroying Earth's natural resources

    Projected change in wintertime precipitation in California using projected changes in extratropical cyclone activity

Available from the American Meteorological Society via the DOI in this record.Wintertime extratropical cyclones in the east Pacific region are the source of much of the precipitation over California. There is a lot of uncertainty in future projections of Californian precipitation associated with predicted changes in the jet stream and the midlatitude storm tracks. The question this work seeks to answer is how the changes in the frequency and the intensity of extratropical cyclones in the Pacific storm track influence future changes in Californian precipitation. We used an objective cyclone identification method applied to 25 CMIP5 models for the historical and RCP8.5 simulations and investigated the changing relationships between storm frequency, intensity and precipitation. Cyclone data from the historical simulations and differences between the historical and RCP8.5 simulations were used to “predict” the modeled precipitation in the RCP8.5 simulations. In all models, the precipitation predicted using historical relationships gives a lower future precipitation change than the direct model output. In the future, the relationship between track density and precipitation indicates that for the same number of tracks, more precipitation is received. The relationship between track intensity and precipitation (which is quite weak in the historical simulations) does not change in the future. This suggests that other sources, likely enhanced moisture availability, are more important than changes in the intensity of cyclones for the rainfall associated with the storm tracks.This work was funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) through a Discovery Early Career Research Award (DE140101305), and the Centre of Excellence for Climate Systems Science (CE110001028)

    Comparative Dissimilation of Xylose and Glucose by Escherichia coli and Citrobacter anindolicum

    The dissimilative action of Escherichia coli, Citrobacter anindolicum and various organisms of the intermediate groups on xylose and on dextrose was studied under comparable conditions with the aim of postulating a mechanism of the breakdown of the xylose molecule. It was found in many cases that there were significant differences in the ratios of the end products obtained from the two sugars. The products found were H2, CO2, formic, acetic, lactic, and succinic acids, and ethyl alcohol. Acetaldehyde could be isolated by means of sodium bisulphite during the fermentative process

This phenomenon serves to elucidate Morrison\u27s larger ideological project, in which she points out the core of one\u27s life is creativity. Flight imagery and hand gestures work together to show a progression in Morrison\u27s novels; thus, they must be considered together in order to completely comprehend characters and their actions as Morrison had intended

    Elevated organic carbon pulses persist in estuarine environment after major storm events

    Estuaries regulate transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from land to ocean. Export of terrestrial DOC from coastal watersheds is exacerbated by increasing major rainfall and storm events and human activities, leading to pulses of DOC that are shunted through rivers downstream to estuaries. Despite an upward trend of extreme events, the fate of the pulsed terrestrial DOC in estuaries remains unclear. We analyzed the effects of seven major tropical cyclones (TC) from 1999 to 2017 on the quantity and fate of DOC in the Neuse River Estuary (NC, USA). Significant TC-induced increases in DOC were observed throughout the estuary; the increase lasting from around 50 d at head-of-tide to over 6 months in lower estuary. Our results suggest that pulsed terrestrial DOC associated with TCs temporarily overwhelms the estuarine filter's abiotic and biotic degradation capacity under such high flow events, enhancing the shunt of terrestrial carbon to the coastal ocean.Non peer reviewe
