Nighttime observations of thunderstorm electrical activity from a high altitude airplane
Nocturnal thunderstorms were observed from above and features of cloud structure and lightning which are not generally visible from the ground are discussed. Most, lightning activity seems to be associated with clouds with strong convective cauliflower tops. In both of the storms lightning channels were visible in the clear air above the cloud. It is shown that substances produced by thunderstorm electrical discharges can be introduced directly into the stratosphere. The cause and nature of the discharges above the cloud are not clear. They may be produced by accumulations of space charge in the clear air above the cloud. The discharges may arise solely because of the intense electric fields produced by charges within the cloud. In the latter case the ions introduced by these discharges will increase the electrical conductivity of the air above the cloud and increase the conduction current that flows from the cloud to the electrosphere. More quantitative data at higher resolution may show significant spectral differences between cloud to ground and intracloud strokes. It is shown that electric field change data taken with an electric field change meter mounted in an airplane provide data on lightning discharges from above that are quite similar to those obtained from the ground in the past. The optical signals from dart leaders, from return strokes, and from continuing currents are recognizable, can be used to provide information on the fine structure of lightning, and can be used to distinguish between cloud to ground and intracloud flashes
A determination of the variation of soil moisture in three plots of soil during one month's growing period
Citation: Kiser, Orville M. and Praeger, Herman A. A determination of the variation of soil moisture in three plots of soil during one month's growing period. Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1908.Introduction: In choosing this work for our thesis we have intended to show the variation of soil moisture to a depth of four feet in three different plots; wheat, corn, and alfalfa, respectively, during the spring season from April 22 to May 21, ’08. The wheat and alfalfa made a good growth during this time while the corn was planted toward the end of the month and was coming up at the close of the experiment
Gender equality and investments in adolescents in the rural Philippines:
"...Many studies have looked at the way resources are distributed to men, women, and especially to small children, but one age group within the family has been largely ignored: the adolescents. Adolescence is a crucial period in that teenagers can make major contributions to their families' welfare through their labor and earnings, in and outside the household, but may sacrifice their own wishes and future well-being in the process if such contributions come at the expense of investments in their education. The research methodology in this report, combining regression analysis with ethnography, provides a lesson in how complementarities between methodological approaches can be exploited...The research finds that parents are not unduly influenced by short-term needs and are ready to make substantial sacrifices in terms of current consumption in order to invest in their children's future. The research also concludes that boys and girls in this rural area of the Philippines are generally treated equally, provid ing a contrast with other Asian settings where discrimination by gender is common." Comparative Studies of Strains of Pleuropneumonia-like Organisms Isolated from Cases of Chronic Respiratory Disease in Poultry
Chronic respiratory disease in chickens and infectious sinusitis in turkeys were first recognized as clinical entities in the Unites States in 1942. They are now considered as diseases of major economic importance throughout the poultry industry. The loss from chronic respiratory disease and infectious sinusitis to the United States poultry industry has been estimated as 100 million dollars per year. Losses from mortality are less than those occurring in other respiratory diseases. The greatest loss comes through decreased growth rate and loss of egg production. The slower growth requires more time to prepare birds for market and there is a greater chance of loss from secondary infections. Work has been done on a pleuropneumonia-like organism vaccine in broilers, but without success. Serological testing has proved to be an effective means of checking for possible infection. It has been suggested that flock weeding similar to the pullorum program could be used for chronic respiratory disease and infectious sinusitis. This plan has not yet been put into effect. It fails to yield complete elimination of the disease or the agents when used on large flocks over a large area. Luginbuhl (37) stated that poultry management has played a major role in keeping poultry flocks free of the pleuropneumonia-like organisms. At the present time it has been accepted that chronic respiratory disease and infectious sinusitis are caused by one or possibly two infecting agents. The first is one of the group of pleuropneumonia-like organisms, and the second is a bacterium or virus, which is thought to be required in addition to the pleuropneumonia-like organisms to produce the severe form of chronic respiratory disease and infectious sinusitis. Luginbuhl (37) states “….ORD has been seen to be mild when infecting chickens by itself and sever when aided by secondary invaders, as bacteria or viruses”. It is also generally accepted at the present time that the agent causing chronic respiratory disease of chickens also cause infectious sinusitis of turkeys and that this agent is transmitted through the egg to the progeny from infected parents
