ECONOMIC VALUE OF THE CARBON SINK SERVICES OF TROPICAL SECONDARY FORESTS AND ITS MANAGEMENT IMPLICATIONS

    Get PDF
This paper explores the economic feasibility secondary forest regeneration and conservation as an alternative to help address global warming. Detailed measurements of tropical secondary forests through time, in different ecological zones of Costa Rica, are used for estimating carbon storage models. The paper addresses key issues in the international discussion about cross- and within-country compensation for carbon storage services and illustrates a method to compute/predict their economic value through time under a variety of scenarios. The procedure is applicable to other developing countries where secondary forest growth is increasingly important.Tropical Forests, Carbon Sequestration, Global Warming, Activities Implemented Jointly., Environmental Economics and Policy, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy, Q23, Q25, Q28.,

The Potential of Collective Behavior in Improving Sustainability of Seaweeds Value Chain in the Philippines

Seaweed farming has been a major source of income for fisherfolks in the Philippines. The farms’ generally small production volume essentially limits the value chain potential. The low output of the farmers confines them to marketing their seaweeds to the small traders who do not have minimum volume requirements despite lower buying prices compared to bigger traders and deductions imposed for farmers who borrowed capital for farm inputs. The emergence of collective behavior is, however, breaking through the traditional value chain of seaweeds. This paper thus capitalized on value chain analysis in an attempt to examine the potential of cooperativism in upgrading the seaweeds value chain in Agutaya, Palawan, and in Talibon, Bohol. Data were collected using rapid appraisal techniques within the value chain framework where market maps, value chain analysis, and upgrading strategies were developed. The study exhibits that with the collective behavior of farmers, the conventional, relatively long seaweeds value chain that passes through multiple traders from farmers to carrageenan processors has been transformed to a much straightforward chain of farmer groups to processors. Accordingly, the estimation of value added reveals that the distribution of value added across segments is more equitable in the new value chain structure. Cooperativism improves bargaining power. This offers an advantageous position for farmers, translating to significant adjustments in profits that enables them to repay debts and gain freedom to scout for other market options. Therefore, this signifies that cooperativism is promising for the sustainability of seaweeds value chain, particularly in the aspect of production

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray diffraction analysis of levansucrase (LsdA) from Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus SRT4

    Get PDF
The endophytic bacterium Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus SRT4 secretes a constitutively expressed levansucrase (LsdA; EC 2.4.1.10), which converts sucrose to fructo-oligosaccharides and levan. Fully active LsdA was purified to high homogeneity by non-denaturing reversed-phase HPLC and was crystallized at room temperature by the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method using ammonium sulfate and ethanol as precipitants. The crystals are extremely sensitive, but native data have been collected to 2.5 A under cryogenic conditions using synchrotron radiation. LsdA crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group P22(1)2(1) or P2(1)2(1)2, with unit-cell parameters a = 53.80, b = 119.39, c = 215.10 A

Peritoneal dialysis associated-peritonitis: a preventable complication

    Get PDF
Peritoneal dialysis is useful renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease. Latin America has 30% of the world population in peritoneal dialysis and within these countries Mexico covers 73% of them. In our country, the Mexican institute of social security (IMSS by its Spanish acronym) serves more than half of the Mexican population that requires renal replacement therapy. In 2014 it represented 15% of total annual cost of the institution. Peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis is the main complication seen in this renal replacement therapy with morbidity and mortality from 2 to 6%. The epidemiology of peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis varies according to the continent, country and dialysis center. The rate of peritonitis per year of each center reflects their quality of care. The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of peritonitis impact in the quality of life of the patient, the success of renal replacement therapy, public health costs and associated mortality. This review addresses the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and preventive measures of peritonitis, focused on the procedures for improving the standards of care

    Get PDF

Introduction: The pathophysiology of preeclampsia is notcompletely elucidated. Different platelet indices, including theplatelet distribution width (PDW), could be used to predict theseverity of this condition. Objective: To analyze the behavior of PDW in the severitydevelopment of preeclampsia in women treated in thematernal-fetal medicine unit of Hospital Simón Bolívar inBogotá, Colombia.Materials and methods: This is an analytical cross-sectionalstudy in 105 patients with hypertensive disorder associatedwith pregnancy, preeclampsia and severe preeclampsia. Weanalyzed the behavior of PDW in a population of hypertensivewomen with preeclampsia using a curve of analysis ‘’ ReceiverOperating Characteristic ‘’ (ROC) to estimate the sensitivity, false positive rate, positive and negative likelihood ratio of thetest as a marker of development of severityResults: PDW had a higher significant increase inpatients where their disease progression developed severitycharacteristics. In the ROC curve, the area under the curve forPDW as a predictor of severity in preeclampsia was 0.68.Conclusion: PDW is a platelet index that increasedsignificantly in women with preeclampsia with severitycharacteristics.
