Evaluation of fetal heart serum amyloid a concentrations in infectious cattle abortion cases

Serum amyloid A (SAA) concentrations have been investigated in diseases of human and domestic animals and increased SAA levels have been reported in infectious diseases. In the present study, we determined the fetal heart blood SAA concentrations in aborted bovine fetuses and investigated the relationship between the level of SAA and causative infectious agents. A total of 46 heart blood samples were collected from aborted bovine fetuses between July 2018 and July 2019 and were assigned to two groups according to microbiological, pathological and molecular results. Group 1: An infectious disease was diagnosed by detecting a microorganism (21 cases); Group 2: An infectious or inflammatory disease was not detected (25 cases). The fetal heart blood SAA concentrations were measured by commercial ELISA test. Serum amyloid A concentrations in aborted bovine fetuses were elevated from 6.1 to ≥40 mg/L in 17 of 21 cases in group 1. In group 2, SAA concentrations were less than 2.5 mg/L in 23 of 25 cases. This difference was statistically significant between group 1 and group 2. These findings suggest that SAA concentrations in fetal heart blood from bovine fetuses is potentially a novel marker for distinguishing between infectious and non-infectious bovine abortion cases

Interscalene block applied by an experienced anesthesiologist has a good anesthetic effect, a long duration of action, and less postoperative pain after arthroscopic shoulder procedures independent of surgery type and operation duration

This study aims to evaluate the severity of postoperative pain and the time to the onset of pain after arthroscopic surgical treatment of rotator cuff tear or instability under interscalene block. Patients and methods: Between October 2015 and June 2016, a total of 172 patients (82 males, 90 females; mean age: 47.9±16.9 years; range, 15 to 83 years) who underwent shoulder arthroscopy under interscalene block by a single surgeon were retrospectively analyzed. The relationship between the postoperative 24-h Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the time to the onset of pain with the type of surgical procedure (rotator cuff repair, n=101 or instability surgery, n=71), and the duration of surgery (<30 min n=92; ≥30 min n=80) was examined. Results: No significant relationship was found between the type of surgical procedure, VAS scores, and the onset of pain after the block (p=0.577 and p=0.780, respectively). No significant relationship was found between the operation duration, and VAS, and the onset of pain after the block (p=0.570 and p=0.408, respectively). The mean duration until the start of postoperative pain was 734±313 (range, 60 to 1,440) min. There was no statistically significant difference in the need for rescue analgesics at the postoperative 24th h and the duration of surgery between the two groups (p=0.393 and p=0.675, respectively). Conclusion: Our study results show no significant difference in the time for the onset of postoperative pain and the VAS scores according to the characteristics of the surgical procedure, operation duration, or age and sex of the patient. Shoulder arthroscopy performed by experienced surgeons under interscalene block eliminates the need for analgesics within the first 12 h postoperatively

Research Tendencies in the Discipline of Distance Education (2015-2022): Examination of Doctoral Theses in Higher Education in Turkey

The discipline of distance education is evolving and becoming mainstream, and this view requires examining research tendencies in the field. Motivated by this justification, it can be argued that understanding distance education to the fullest extent is possible partially through examining changes in theory and practice, as research conducted in the field reflects changes, dynamics, and perspectives. In this regard, the purpose of this paper is to present the research tendencies in doctoral theses in the Turkish higher education context with a specific focus on distance education. In line with this aim, a total of 265 doctoral theses published between 2015 and 2022 were examined through data mining and analytics approaches. The analysis of the titles through t-SNE analysis revealed four broad themes. These are: (1) more emphasis on learning processes; (2) the comparison of online technologies and online learning spaces; (3) a strong focus on educational technologies; and (4) the limitations emerging from comparative studies. The examination of the abstracts through text-mining identified the following themes: (1) the methodological vicious circle, the pursuit of methodological perfection, and lack of critical perspectives; (2) the tendency to use online [educational] technologies; (3) the comparison of distance and face-to-face education; and (4) the design of social interaction and communication in distance education processes. Finally, the analysis of the keywords through word clouds surfaced the following research tendencies: (1) Technology-supported distance education processes; (2) the wide use of educational technologies; (3) focusing on issues related to the learners in distance education. The paper concludes with implications and recommendations for future research directions

Authentication of fish species using a simple PCR-RFLP method

A polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was developed as a tool to prevent commercial frauds in fish products. The PCR was used to ampli- fy the cytochrome b gene, part of the mitochondrial genome. The PCR products were digested with different restriction endonucleases (AluI, HaeIII, HinfI, Hsp92, Taql) to identify five fish species - Mugil cephalus, Pomatomus saltator, Belone belone, Merlangius merlangus, and Oncorhynchus mykiss. None of the tested enzymes, alone, was able to distinguish between the five fish species, but by combining the results of two digestions, all five species could be differ- entiated. Thus, this method can be used to expose fraudulent substitutions with less valuable fish
