Is level of neighbourhood green space associated with physical activity in green space?
Background
There is accumulating evidence that greater availability of green space in a neighbourhood is associated with health benefits for the local population. One mechanism proposed for this association is that green space provides a venue for, and therefore encourages, physical activity. It has also been suggested that socio-economic health inequalities may be narrower in greener areas because of the equalised opportunity for physical activity green spaces provide. However, research exploring associations between the availability of green space and physical activity has produced mixed results. Limits to the assessment of the type and amount of physical activity which occurs specifically in green space may account for these mixed findings. This observational study was therefore concerned with the extent to which green space is a venue for physical activity and whether this could account for narrower socio-economic health inequalities in greener neighbourhoods.<p></p>
Method
Secondary analysis of cross sectional data on 3679 adults (16+) living in urban areas across Scotland matched with a neighbourhood level measure of green space availability. Associations between green space availability and both total physical activity, and activity specifically within green space, were explored using logistic regression models. Interactions between socio-economic position and physical activity were assessed. All models adjusted for age, sex and household income.<p></p>
Results
The availability of green space in a neighbourhood was not associated with total physical activity or that specifically in green space. There was no evidence that income-related inequalities in physical activity within green space were narrower in greener areas of Scotland.<p></p>
Conclusion
Physical activity may not be the main mechanism explaining the association between green space and health in Scotland. The direct effect of perceiving a natural environment on physiological and psychological health may offer an alternative explanation.<p></p>
Coherence lengths for superconductivity in the two-orbital negative-U Hubbard model
We study the peculiarities of coherency in the superconductivity of
two-orbital system. The superconducting phase transition is caused here by the
on-site intra-orbital attractions (negative-U Hubbard model) and inter-orbital
pair-transfer interaction. The dependencies of critical and noncritical
correlation lengths on interaction channels and band fillings are analyzed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Acta Physica Polonica (2012) in pres
Nonlinear Dirac and diffusion equations in 1 + 1 dimensions from stochastic considerations
We generalize the method of obtaining the fundamental linear partial
differential equations such as the diffusion and Schrodinger equation, Dirac
and telegrapher's equation from a simple stochastic consideration to arrive at
certain nonlinear form of these equations. The group classification through one
parameter group of transformation for two of these equations is also carried
out.Comment: 18 pages, Latex file, some equations corrected and group analysis in

Enabling a High Throughput Real Time Data Pipeline for a Large Radio Telescope Array with GPUs
The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a next-generation radio telescope
currently under construction in the remote Western Australia Outback. Raw data
will be generated continuously at 5GiB/s, grouped into 8s cadences. This high
throughput motivates the development of on-site, real time processing and
reduction in preference to archiving, transport and off-line processing. Each
batch of 8s data must be completely reduced before the next batch arrives.
Maintaining real time operation will require a sustained performance of around
2.5TFLOP/s (including convolutions, FFTs, interpolations and matrix
multiplications). We describe a scalable heterogeneous computing pipeline
implementation, exploiting both the high computing density and FLOP-per-Watt
ratio of modern GPUs. The architecture is highly parallel within and across
nodes, with all major processing elements performed by GPUs. Necessary
scatter-gather operations along the pipeline are loosely synchronized between
the nodes hosting the GPUs. The MWA will be a frontier scientific instrument
and a pathfinder for planned peta- and exascale facilities.Comment: Version accepted by Comp. Phys. Com
ZOBOV: a parameter-free void-finding algorithm
ZOBOV (ZOnes Bordering On Voidness) is an algorithm that finds density
depressions in a set of points, without any free parameters, or assumptions
about shape. It uses the Voronoi tessellation to estimate densities, which it
uses to find both voids and subvoids. It also measures probabilities that each
void or subvoid arises from Poisson fluctuations. This paper describes the
ZOBOV algorithm, and the results from its application to the dark-matter
particles in a region of the Millennium Simulation. Additionally, the paper
points out an interesting high-density peak in the probability distribution of
dark-matter particle densities.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, MNRAS, accepted. Added explanatory figures, and

Spermatozoa induce transcriptomic alterations in bovine oviductal epithelial cells prior to initial contact
The capability of spermatozoa to directly influence maternal gene expression is already established. Indeed, some of the changes induced by spermatozoa may have a direct functional importance in the pre-conceptional period. Although the mechanisms underlying these sperm-maternal interactions are not well characterized, it is possible that they could involve ligands that are released from the spermatozoa. This study therefore aimed to test whether physical contact between bovine spermatozoa and bovine oviductal epithelial cells (BOECs) is a prerequisite for spermatozoa-induced gene expression changes. We used two co-culture models: a contact co-culture model in which spermatozoa interact directly with BOECs, and a non-contact co-culture model in which an insert with the pore size of 0.4 μm was placed between spermatozoa and BOECs. Messenger RNA sequencing analysis of BOECs by RNA-seq revealed ten differentially expressed genes in contact system and 108 differentially expressed genes in the non-contact system after 10 h of co-culture. Retinol metabolism pathway and ovarian steroidogenesis pathway were significantly enriched in the non-contact co-culture system. Q-PCR analysis revealed that transcriptional responses can be rapid, with increased expression of four genes (DHRS3, CYP1B1, PTGS2, and ATF3) detectable within just 90 min of co-incubation, but with expression levels highly dependent on the type of co-culture system. The findings from our study demonstrate that direct contact with spermatozoa is not necessary to induce changes in gene expression of oviductal epithelial cells, suggesting that spermatozoa may be able to signal to maternal tissues in advance of their arrival
PyCOOL - a Cosmological Object-Oriented Lattice code written in Python
There are a number of different phenomena in the early universe that have to
be studied numerically with lattice simulations. This paper presents a graphics
processing unit (GPU) accelerated Python program called PyCOOL that solves the
evolution of scalar fields in a lattice with very precise symplectic
integrators. The program has been written with the intention to hit a sweet
spot of speed, accuracy and user friendliness. This has been achieved by using
the Python language with the PyCUDA interface to make a program that is easy to
adapt to different scalar field models. In this paper we derive the symplectic
dynamics that govern the evolution of the system and then present the
implementation of the program in Python and PyCUDA. The functionality of the
program is tested in a chaotic inflation preheating model, a single field
oscillon case and in a supersymmetric curvaton model which leads to Q-ball
production. We have also compared the performance of a consumer graphics card
to a professional Tesla compute card in these simulations. We find that the
program is not only accurate but also very fast. To further increase the
usefulness of the program we have equipped it with numerous post-processing
functions that provide useful information about the cosmological model. These
include various spectra and statistics of the fields. The program can be
additionally used to calculate the generated curvature perturbation. The
program is publicly available under GNU General Public License at

The exact equivalence of the one-flavour lattice Thirring model with Wilson fermions to a two-colour loop model
Within Euclidean lattice field theory an exact equivalence between the
one-flavour 2D Thirring model with Wilson fermions and Wilson parameter
to a two-colour loop model on the square lattice is established. For
non-interacting fermions this model reduces to an exactly solved loop model
which is known to be a free fermion model. The two-colour loop model equivalent
to the Thirring model can also be understood as a 4-state 49-vertex model.Comment: 29 pages LaTe
