To evaluate the performance of various designs of crossflow filtration microfluidic devices, blood flow was modeled using computational fluid dynamics software (COMSOL Multiphysics). Velocity profiles were generated and used to analyze four critical design parameters: pillar size, pillar shape, gap size, and wall length. These parameters were optimized to yield greatest flow from an unfiltered main channel into two filtered side channels of the device, thereby maximizing filtration capacity. Devices containing pillars of 10 µm diameter yielded a significantly greater filtration capacity than devices with pillars of 20 µm diameter. Flow patterns from the main channel to the side channels were not significantly affected when circular, octagonal, and hexagonal pillars were compared; however, use of triangular and square pillars caused a reduction in side channel flow rates. Side channel velocities consistently improved as gap sizes were increased from 3.0 µm to 8.0 µm; however, 3.5 µm gaps were included in the final design for the purpose of separating red and white blood cells. Backflow prevention walls were placed at bends in the device and were systematically lengthened until all backflow was eliminated. Following optimization of the microfluidic device, two prototypes were prepared: a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) device with glass backing and a silicon device with PDMS backing. The filtration capacity of these devices were tested using polystyrene microspheres with sizes corresponding to those of red and white blood cells. In both prototypes, between 73 and 75% of small microspheres were consistently filtered into the side channels. Silicon-PDMS devices demonstrated better retention of large microspheres in the main channel and less microsphere agglomeration than did PDMS-glass devices. The benefits of silicon-PDMS devices, however, came at the cost of a difficult fabrication process

Obstetric anesthesia is one of the high risk subspecialties of anesthesia practice. Anesthesia related complications are the sixth leading cause of maternal mortality. Difficult or failed intubation following induction of general anesthesia for CS remains the major contributory factor to anesthesia-related maternal complications. The airway management of obstetric patients is a challenging issue for several reasons. Anatomic and physiologic changes related to pregnancy may increase the difficult and failed intubation rates compared to the general surgical population. Proper evaluation of the airway anatomy and airway structures is vital to prevent airway management related catastrophes. In addition to basic airway and intubation equipment, each anesthesia department must have difficult intubation equipment cart including fiber optic laryngoscope, video laryngoscopes, and different types of laryngeal masks. It is essential that all anesthesiologists have a preconceived and well thought-out algorithm and emergency airway equipment to deal with airway emergencies during difficult or failed intubation of a parturient.

A simple phase transition relaxation solver for liquid-vapor flows

    No full text
International audienceDetermining liquid-vapor phase equilibrium is often required in multiphase flow computations. Existing equilibrium solvers are either accurate but computationally expensive, or cheap but inaccurate. The present paper aims at building a fast and accurate specific phase equilibrium solver, specifically devoted to unsteady multiphase flow computations. Moreover, the solver is efficient at phase diagram bounds, where non-equilibrium pure liquid and pure gas are present. It is systematically validated against solutions based on an accurate (but expensive) solver. Its capability to deal with cavitating, evaporating and condensing two-phase flows is highlighted on severe test problems both 1D and 2D

AN EMPIRICAL VIRIAL-LIKE CUBIC EQUATION OF STATE FOR PHASE EQUILIBRIUM CALCULATIONS

    No full text
An empirical cubic equation of state(EOS) was obtained by truncating the virial expansion in reciprocal of molar volume after the third term. The constants of the EOS was generalized in terms of critical temperature, critical pressure and Pitzer's acentric factor. In pure component applications the EOS exhibited a performance comparable to Peng-Robinson (1976) EOS in the reduced temperature range of 0.5 to 1. The present EOS tends to predict better saturation liquid volumes at reduced temperatures below 0.8, and better estimations for second virial coefficient at high reduced temperatures. The EOS was successfully employed for vapor liquid equilibrium calculations for some mixtures of normal or slightly polar fluids with traditional one binary parameter mixing rule at moderately high pressures. At low reduced temperatures, where conventional one adjustable parameter applications of the cubic equations compare unfavorably with dual methods based on excess Gibbs energy functions for the liquid phase, a new two constant mixing rule introduced by Stryjek and Vera (1986) was employed for the present equation of state.Publisher's Versio

EVALUATION OF SECOND VIRIAL COEFFICIENTS FROM SATURATION DATA

    No full text
A data reduction technique is introduced for the evaluation of second virial coefficients of gases at subcritical temperatures. The method makes use of the vapor-liquid equilibrium data, i.e., temperature, saturation pressure, liquid and vapor molar volumes and can be used to obtain second virial coefficients of a wide variety of fluids including polar, associating and quantum gases. The calculated second virial coefficients are in good agreement with their counterparts from literature, which are obtained from gas compressibility data by traditional data reduction methods
