New strategies for the enhancement and promotion of local identity in coastal areas. The case of the Sorrento peninsula

    Get PDF
The paper proposes to consider the port areas as strategic nodes for the valorisation of the territory. In these areas the reuse of buildings represents the opportunity to integrate new economic and cultural activities for tourist promotion and enhancement of local resources. The localisation of new cultural, recreational and promotional activities can also increase territorial competitiveness and attractiveness and employment rate, related to functional mix and economic activities. In many contemporary cities, recent rehabilitation processes carried out this strategy, including the reuse of existing buildings in the ports by new activities especially connected with the maritime tradition of the city. The proposal aims to verify the opportunity to build a strategy based on valorisation and management of excellent coastal areas characterized by a network of small ports in small cities. The Sorrento Peninsula (Italy) represents an emblematic case study in order to enhance the role of port areas for the promotion of natural, cultural and historical resources in a systemic vision of the territory. The reuse of existing buildings for tourism promotion together with the rehabilitation of the pedestrian paths system can contribute to realize a network that – starting from port areas – improves accessibility and usability

Analysis of factors influencing pulmonary artery growth after BCPA in patients with single ventricle

After 40 years since its introduction still confirms good results with low complication and mortality rate. Pulmonary arteries growth after BCPA is rather variable and inconstant with a widely reported Nakata-index reduction after some months. Right lower lobe pulmonary index instead increases significantly, possibly due to preferential blood flow after BCPA. Patients with smaller pulmonary arteries at the beginning seem to benefit of a more effective pulmonary arteries growth. Accessory source of pulmonary blood flow at the BCPA still bares uncertain efficacy and benefits, even thought it seems to be associated with a better pulmonary artery growth, particularly left lower lobe, and better TCPC results

Abandoned Railways, Renewed Pathways: Opportunities for Accessing Landscapes

The abandonment of railway lines and station buildings is the outcome of social, economic and technological developments that have changed the local infrastructure systems. Unlike many European nations, in Italy the strategic role of these resources is still undervalued. The paper proposes a methodological approach aimed at achieving the valorisation of railways and station buildings network through integrated actions. The disused railways are potential new pathways and the abandoned stations provide available spaces for new activities, supporting sustainable local development and regeneration processes. Considering disused railways and stations as integrated parts of a system, they can improve the accessibility of environmental, cultural and historical resources network. The proposed methodological approach identifies categories of variables adopting to face up to the case of the disused railway of Cancello-Torre Annunziata in the South of Italy. The International Competition of ideas "Green Boulevard - Parkways of the 3rd millennium" has been the occasion to confront with the research object through a planning testing that has successfully proved and won an award

Ross-Kabbani Operation in an Infant with Mitral Valve Dysplasia

    Get PDF
Background. Mitral valve replacement can be very difficult to obtain in infants because the valve annulus diameter can be smaller than the available prosthesis. Case Report. We describe the case of a 2-month-old female weighing 3.5 kg affected by mitral valve dysplasia leading to severe valve stenosis. Despite full medication, the clinical conditions were critical and surgery was undertaken. The mitral valve was unsuitable for repair and the orifice of mitral anulus was 12 mm, too small for a mechanical prosthesis. Therefore, a Ross-Kabbani operation was undertaken, replacing the mitral valve with the pulmonary autograft and reconstructing the right ventricular outflow tract with an etherograft. Results. The postoperative course was uneventful and the clinical conditions are good at 4-month follow-up. Conclusion. The Ross-Kabbani operation can be an interesting alternative to mitral valve replacement in infants when valve repair is not achievable and there is little space for an intra-annular mechanical prosthesis implant

CITTÀ INCLUSIVE PER COMUNITÀ INTERCULTURALI. ESPERIENZE EUROPEE

The multicultural city is one of the major issues within the political Agenda as well as one of the prominent research topics, also due to the recent increasing of migratory flows throughout Europe. Within this framework, urban policies have been included in decisionmaking processes regarding cultural inclusion and social cohesion: cities have been considered the outpost of cultural diversities and dialogues. According to this scenario, the research focuses on European initiatives at urban level oriented at increasing the cultural inclusiveness. Challenges, issues and opportunities have been explored from a specific perspective: how local authorities and communities deal with this challenge in terms of spatial and social equity. By applying a case study approach, bottom up experiences, social innovation practices, community-led initiatives as well as traditional top down projects dedicated to the multicultural city have been collected and analyzed. The results of the survey show a scenario in which both bottom up initiatives and community engagement processes can be catalyst of a self-sustaining intercultural development.DOI: http://dx.medra.org/10.19254/LaborEst.14.0
