Will Higher Shipping Costs Drive the U.S. to Source More Localized Produce?
The recent wide fluctuations in diesel fuel costs and subsequent trucking costs has raised speculation within the produce industry of potential structural shifts in the location of production. Recent increases in demand for local produce seem to further support speculation toward this end. A component pricing model is used to actually examine the impact of fuel prices on farm gate and retail produce prices for strawberries, lettuce, and potatoes. The study finds that distribution costs, while significantly increasing in absolute value, have surprisingly little contribution to changes in retail prices even in markets distant to the primary production regions. Canonical analysis based on scatter matrices.
In this paper, the influence functions and limiting distributions of the canonical correlations and coefficients based on affine equivariant scatter matrices are developed for elliptically symmetric distributions. General formulas for limiting variances and covariances of the canonical correlations and canonical vectors based on scatter matrices are obtained. Also the use of the so called shape matrices in canonical analysis is investigated. The scatter and shape matrices based on the affine equivariant Sign Covariance Matrix as well as the Tyler's shape matrix are considered in more detail. Their finite sample and limiting efficiencies are compared to those of the Minimum Covariance Determinant estimator and S-estimates through theoretical and simulation studies. Combination therapy with normobaric oxygen (NBO) plus thrombolysis in experimental ischemic stroke
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The widespread use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), the only FDA-approved acute stroke treatment, remains limited by its narrow therapeutic time window and related risks of brain hemorrhage. Normobaric oxygen therapy (NBO) may be a useful physiological strategy that slows down the process of cerebral infarction, thus potentially allowing for delayed or more effective thrombolysis. In this study we investigated the effects of NBO started simultaneously with intravenous tPA, in spontaneously hypertensive rats subjected to embolic middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke. After homologous clot injection, animals were randomized into different treatment groups: saline injected at 1 hour; tPA at 1 hour; saline at 1 hour plus NBO; tPA at 1 hour plus NBO. NBO was maintained for 3 hours. Infarct volume, brain swelling and hemorrhagic transformation were quantified at 24 hours. Outcome assessments were blinded to therapy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Upon clot injection, cerebral perfusion in the MCA territory dropped below 20% of pre-ischemic baselines. Both tPA-treated groups showed effective thrombolysis (perfusion restored to nearly 100%) and smaller infarct volumes (379 ± 57 mm<sup>3 </sup>saline controls; 309 ± 58 mm<sup>3 </sup>NBO; 201 ± 78 mm<sup>3 </sup>tPA; 138 ± 30 mm<sup>3 </sup>tPA plus NBO), showing that tPA-induced reperfusion salvages ischemic tissue and that NBO does not significantly alter this neuroprotective effect. NBO had no significant effect on hemorrhagic conversion, brain swelling, or mortality.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>NBO can be safely co-administered with tPA. The efficacy of tPA thrombolysis is not affected and there is no induction of brain hemorrhage or edema. These experimental results require clinical confirmation.</p
Evidence for TeV gamma ray emission from Cassiopeia A
232 hours of data were accumulated from 1997 to 1999, using the HEGRA
Stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope System to observe the supernova remnant
Cassiopeia A. TeV gamma ray emission was detected at the 5 sigma level, and a
flux of (5.8 +- 1.2(stat) +- 1.2(syst)) 10^(-9) ph m^(-2) s^(-1) above 1 TeV
was derived. The spectral distribution is consistent with a power law with a
differential spectral index of -2.5 +- 0.4(stat) +- 0.1(syst) between 1 and 10
TeV. As this is the first report of the detection of a TeV gamma ray source on
the "centi-Crab" scale, we present the analysis in some detail. Implications
for the acceleration of cosmic rays depend on the details of the source

Is the giant radio galaxy M 87 a TeV gamma-ray emitter?
For the first time an excess of photons above an energy threshold of 730 GeV from the giant radio galaxy M 87 has been measured at a significance level above 4 σ. The data have been taken during the years 1998 and 1999 with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The excess of 107.4 ± 26.8 events above 730 GeV corresponds to an integral flux of 3.3% of the Crab flux or Nγ (E > 730 GeV) = (0.96 ± 0.23) × 10-12 phot cm-2 s-1. M 87 is located at the center of the Virgo cluster of galaxies at a relatively small redshift of z = 0.00436 and is a promising candidate among the class of giant radio galaxies for the emission of TeV γ-radiation. The detection of TeV γ-rays from M 87 - if confirmed - would establish a new class of extragalactic source in this energy regime since all other AGN detected to date at TeV energies are BL Lac type objects.F. A search for TeV gamma-ray emission from SNRs, pulsars and unidentified GeV sources in the Galactic plane in the longitude range between -2 deg and 85 deg
Using the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, one
quarter of the Galactic plane (-2 deg < l < 85 deg) was surveyed for TeV
gamma-ray emission from point sources and moderately extended sources (diameter
<= 0.8 deg). The region covered includes 86 known pulsars (PSR), 63 known
supernova remnants (SNR) and nine GeV sources, representing a significant
fraction of the known populations. No evidence for emission of TeV gamma
radiation was detected, and upper limits range from 0.15 Crab units up to
several Crab units, depending on the observation time and zenith angles
covered. The ensemble sums over selected SNR and pulsar subsamples and over the
GeV-sources yield no indication for emission from these potential sources. The
upper limit for the SNR population is at the level of 6.7% of the Crab flux and
for the pulsar ensemble at the level of 3.6% of the Crab flux.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&
Observations of H1426+428 with HEGRA -- Observations in 2002 and reanalysis of 1999&2000 data
The HEGRA system of imaging air Cherenkov telescopes has been used to observe
the BL Lac object H1426+428 () for 217.5 hours in 2002. In this data
set alone, the source is detected at a confidence level of ,
confirming this object as a TeV source. The overall flux level during the
observations in 2002 is found to be a factor of lower than during
the previous observations by HEGRA in 1999&2000. A new spectral analysis has
been carried out, improving the signal-to-noise ratio at the expense of a
slightly increased systematic uncertainty and reducing the relative energy
resolution to over a wide range of energies. The new
method has also been applied to the previously published data set taken in 1999
and 2000, confirming the earlier claim of a flattening of the energy spectrum
between 1 and 5 TeV. The data set taken in 2002 shows again a signal at
energies above 1 TeV. We combine the energy spectra as determined by the CAT
and VERITAS groups with our reanalyzed result of the 1999&2000 data set and
apply a correction to account for effects of absorption of high energy photons
on extragalactic background light in the optical to mid infrared band. The
shape of the inferred source spectrum is mostly sensitive to the
characteristics of the extragalactic background light between wavelengths of 1

Insights into the mechanism of the cyanobactin heterocyclase enzyme
The work is supported by the European Research Council NCB-TNT (339367), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BB/K015508/1 and BB/M001679/1).Cyanobactin heterocyclases share the same catalytic domain (YcaO) as heterocyclases/cyclodehydratases from other ribosomal peptide (RiPPs) biosynthetic pathways. These enzymes process multiple residues (Cys/Thr/Ser) within the same substrate. The processing of cysteine residues proceeds with a known order. We show the order of reaction for threonines is different and depends in part on a leader peptide within the substrate. In contrast to other YcaO domains, which have been reported to exclusively break down ATP into ADP and inorganic phosphate, cyanobactin heterocyclases have been observed to produce AMP and inorganic pyrophosphate during catalysis. We dissect the nucleotide profiles associated with heterocyclization and propose a unifying mechanism, where the γ-phosphate of ATP is transferred in a kinase mechanism to the substrate to yield a phosphorylated intermediate common to all YcaO domains. In cyanobactin heterocyclases, this phosphorylated intermediate, in a proportion of turnovers, reacts with ADP to yield AMP and pyrophosphate.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Sex-specific differences in white matter microvascular integrity after ischaemic stroke
Background and purpose Functional outcomes after ischaemic stroke are worse in women, despite adjusting for differences in comorbidities and treatment approaches. White matter microvascular integrity represents one risk factor for poor long-term functional outcomes after ischaemic stroke. The aim of the study is to characterise sex-specific differences in microvascular integrity in individuals with acute ischaemic stroke.Methods A retrospective analysis of subjects with acute ischaemic stroke and brain MRI with diffusion-weighted (DWI) and dynamic-susceptibility contrast-enhanced (DSC) perfusion-weighted imaging obtained within 9 hours of last known well was performed. In the hemisphere contralateral to the acute infarct, normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) microvascular integrity was measured using the K-2 coefficient and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values. Regression analyses for predictors of K-2 coefficient, DWI volume and good outcome (90-day modified Rankin scale (mRS) score <2) were performed.Results 105 men and 79 women met inclusion criteria for analysis. Despite no difference in age, women had increased NAWM K-2 coefficient (1027.4 vs 692.7x10(-6)/s; p=0.006). In women, atrial fibrillation (beta=583.6; p=0.04) and increasing NAWM ADC (beta=4.4; p=0.02) were associated with increased NAWM K-2 coefficient. In multivariable regression analysis, the K-2 coefficient was an independent predictor of DWI volume in women (beta=0.007; p=0.01) but not men.Conclusions In women with acute ischaemic stroke, increased NAWM K-2 coefficient is associated with increased infarct volume and chronic white matter structural integrity. Prospective studies investigating sex-specific differences in white matter microvascular integrity are needed
