    Plot-based urbanism and urban morphometrics : measuring the evolution of blocks, street fronts and plots in cities

    Generative urban design has been always conceived as a creation-centered process, i.e. a process mainly concerned with the creation phase of a spatial transformation. We argue that, though the way we create a space is important, how that space evolves in time is ways more important when it comes to providing livable places gifted by identity and sense of attachment. We are presenting in this paper this idea and its major consequences for urban design under the title of “Plot-Based Urbanism”. We will argue that however, in order for a place to be adaptable in time, the right structure must be provided “by design” from the outset. We conceive urban design as the activity aimed at designing that structure. The force that shapes (has always shaped) the adaptability in time of livable urban places is the restless activity of ordinary people doing their own ordinary business, a kind of participation to the common good, which has hardly been acknowledged as such, that we term “informal participation”. Investigating what spatial components belong to the spatial structure and how they relate to each other is of crucial importance for urban design and that is the scope of our research. In this paper a methodology to represent and measure form-related properties of streets, blocks, plots and buildings in cities is presented. Several dozens of urban blocks of different historic formation in Milan (IT) and Glasgow (UK) are surveyed and analyzed. Effort is posed to identify those spatial properties that are shared by clusters of cases in history and therefore constitute the set of spatial relationships that determine the morphological identity of places. To do so, we investigate the analogy that links the evolution of urban form as a cultural construct to that of living organisms, outlining a conceptual framework of reference for the further investigation of “the DNA of places”. In this sense, we identify in the year 1950 the nominal watershed that marks the first “speciation” in urban history and we find that factors of location/centrality, scale and street permeability are the main drivers of that transition towards the entirely new urban forms of contemporary cities

    Geomaterials and decay forms of the coastal towers of Piscinni and Foghe, Weastern Sardinia

    [EN] The distribution of Coastal Towers in Sardinia testify that foreign invasions, which occurred several times over the centuries, were particularly frequent and dangerous. The beginning of the eighth century signed an increase of the attacks from the sea. The most of Coastal Towers were built in the period of Spanish rule, from 1583 to 1720. Despite numerous restorations over the years, many of these defensive structures are in critical conditions, some also affected by structural collapse. The building materials are closely related to local geological outcrops, and consist of sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic rocks. Study of different lithotypes allowed assessing the vulnerability of different materials in different environmental conditions. Salts, transported by aerosols and deposited inside the porous structures, are the principal cause of decay of the building materials.     Effects of secukinumab on serum adipocytokines: preliminary data

    Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects joints, connective tissues and the axial skeleton. Metabolic syndrome is an independent risk factor for psoriasis (Pso) development and is associated with more severe forms of Pso. Adipocytokines are secreted by white adipose tissue and are thought to link obesity with the development of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Secukinumab is a new monoclonal antibody with a different mechanism of action. This antibody selectively binds to and neutralizes interleukin-17 (IL-17) and it has shown efficacy in the treatment of PsA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible interferences of secukinumab on different adipocytokines. We enrolled 28 patients with PsA, classified with the CASPAR criteria. Serum samples were stored at baseline and then at the first, the third and the sixth month of therapy. Resistin, chemerin, adiponectin and C-reactive protein (CRP) were dosed. When tested globally, none of the adipokine tested showed any statistically significant variation. However, when the male group was tested, both resistin and chemerin at M6 showed a significant decrease from baseline. CRP did not show any variation at any time point. Our study demonstrated that treatment with secukinumab has little influence on the levels of adipokines tested within the first six months of treatment even though it might exert different influence between males and females from a metabolic perspective. Further studies with greater numbers of patients are needed to determine whether these preliminary results have clinical relevance

    Mmot1, a New Helix-Loop-Helix Transcription Factor Gene Displaying a Sharp Expression Boundary in the Embryonic Mouse Brain

    Several genetic factors have been proven to contribute to the specification of the metencephalic-mesencephalic territory, a process that sets the developmental foundation for prospective morphogenesis of the cerebellum and mesencephalon. However, evidence stemming from genetic and developmental studies performed in man and various model organisms suggests the contribution of many additional factors in determining the fine subdivision and differentiation of these central nervous system regions. In man, the cerebellar ataxias/aplasias represent a large and heterogeneous family of genetic disorders. Here, we describe the identification by differential screening and the characterization of Mmot1, a new gene encoding a DNA-binding protein strikingly similar to the helix-loop-helix factor Ebf/Olf1. Throughout midgestation embryogenesis, Mmot1is expressed at high levels in the metencephalon, mesencephalon, and sensory neurons of the nasal cavity. In vitro DNA binding data suggest some functional equivalence of Mmot1 and Ebf/Olf1, possibly accounting for the reported lack of olfactory or neural defects in Ebf −/− knockout mutants. The isolation of Mmot1 and of an additional homolog in the mouse genome defines a novel, phylogenetically conserved mammalian family of transcription factor genes of potential relevance in studies of neural development and its aberrations

    Durability of repair mortars used in restoration of a Sardinian coastal tower: assessment after ten years

    [EN] This study reports the results of investigations on conservation conditions of an ancient tower, called Torre del Pozzo, located in the S-W coast of Sardinia, restored about ten years ago. The tower suffers from serious problems related to vulnerability of building materials, particularly limestone and sandstones and aerial lime mortar with poor physical-mechanical properties. Over the centuries the materials were subjected to aggressive actions (wind corrasion and salt crystallization) causing an intense erosion of the walls with consequent partial collapse of the structure. About ten years ago a restoration involved the mortars and only the replacement and integration of ashlars deteriorated. After about 10 years from this intervention, some inspections have been carried out in order to assess the effectiveness of the intervention and the state of preservation of the tower.     Urban form and socioeconomic deprivation in Isfahan : an Urban MorphoMetric approach

    Studies on urban deprivation date back to the 19th Century but remain important today due to rising levels of inequality and social segregation. However, while social causes of deprivation have been investigated, the role of the built environment remains neglected. Existing studies either provide broad coverage at the expense of detailed morphological descriptions or offer meticulous accounts of small-scale areas without capturing the broader context. This paper addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between urban form, measured at the building level, and deprivation across the entire city of Isfahan, Iran. By doing so, we position this study in the tradition of urban morphology. Operationally, we, first, identify urban types (UTs), that is, distinctive patterns of urban form, by clustering 200+ morphological characters; second, we explore the relationship between proportion of buildings belonging to each UT, in each neighbourhood, and deprivation; third, we offer detailed descriptions of the UTs most strongly associated with deprivation, discuss possible drivers for the observed correlations, and link findings to relevant literature in the field. Twelve UTs are identified, with four showing the strongest impacts on predicting deprivation. This study brings novel insights on the morphology of deprivation of Isfahan, while contextualising them with respect to domain-specific studies, which have predominantly focused on Western cities. The proposed methodology can be replicated to explore morphologies of deprivation in different contexts, further our understanding of the topic, and potentially inform planning and policy making

    EO + morphometrics : understanding cities through urban morphology at large scale

    Earth Observation (EO)-based mapping of cities has great potential to detect patterns beyond the physical ones. However, EO combined with the surge of machine learning techniques to map non-physical, such as socioeconomic, aspects directly, goes to the expense of reproducibility and interpretability, hence scientific validity. In this paper, we suggest shifting the focus from the direct detection of socioeconomic status from raw images through image features, to the mapping of interpretable urban morphology of basic urban elements as an intermediate step, to which socioeconomic patterns can then be related. This shift is profound, in that, rather than abstract image features, it allows to capture the morphology of real urban objects, such as buildings and streets, and use this to then interpret other patterns, including socioeconomic ones. Because socioeconomic patterns are not derived from raw image data, the mapping of these patterns is less data demanding and more replicable. Specifically, we propose a 2-step approach: (1) extraction of fundamental urban elements from satellite imagery, and (2) derivation of meaningful urban morphological patterns from the extracted elements. We refer to this 2-step approach as “EO + Morphometrics”. Technically, EO consists of applying deep learning through a reengineered U-Net shaped convolutional neural network to publicly accessible Google Earth imagery for building extraction. Methods of urban morphometrics are then applied to these buildings to compute semantically explicit and interpretable metrics of urban form. Finally, clustering is applied to these metrics to obtain morphological patterns, or urban types. The “EO + Morphometrics” approach is applied to the city of Nairobi, Kenya, where 15 different urban types are identified. To test whether this outcome meaningfully describes current urbanization patterns, we verified whether selected types matched locally designated informal settlements. We observe that four urban types, characterized by compact and organic urban form, were recurrent in such settlements. The proposed "EO + Morphometrics" approach paves the way for the large-scale identification of interpretable urban form patterns and study of associated dynamics across any region in the world

    Women’s safety and urban form : a perspective from Kochi (India)

    The world is urbanising fast. Official estimates report that around 70% of the global population will live in cities by 2060. While this phenomenon is assumed to be beneficial, social inequality and safety issues are on the rise. Among the latter, women’s safety in the urban environment is a topic of particular concern due to rising numbers of assaults, especially in South Asia. However, systematic investigations of the relationship between women’s safety in cities and urban form lack. In this paper, we explore such a relationship in Kochi (India) by correlating 24 urban types (UTs), i.e. distinctive patterns of urban form, obtained from previous work, with four scores of women’s safety (i.e. presence of people in streets, feeling safe, visibility, gender diversity), extracted from an open dataset by Safetipin, a social organisation focusing on gender issues in the urban space. Four UTs out of 24 are consistently correlated with the set of four scores. Three of such UTs are inversely correlated, with two of them presenting sparse, relatively low-density urban fabrics with very small or very large buildings; one UT shows a very fine grained, relatively dense, mainly residential fabric with very small buildings. Conversely, one UT shows a positive correlation with safety. It is characterised by a compact, fine grained and more orderly urban fabric with averagely sized buildings hosting multiple functions
