    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to investigate the subjective ratings of dental anxiety levels among university students enrolled at Jordan University of Science and Technology. In addition, the present study aimed to explore the sources of dental anxiety and the impact of gender on the perceived dental anxiety and the correlation between field of study and dental anxiety level. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Modified Corah Dental Anxiety Scale was used to measure dental anxiety among the study population. Six hundred subjects were recruited into the study from Jordanian undergraduate students from the faculties of Medicine, Engineering, and Dentistry. RESULTS: Five hundred and thirty five complete questionnaires were returned, which accounts for a response rate of 89.2%. The totals of the mean anxiety scores were the following: Medical students, 13.58%; Engineering students, 13.27% and dental students, 11.22%. About 32% of the study population has scored 15 or more. Dental students had the lowest percentage of those who scored 15 or more. Surprisingly, the medical students were responsible for the highest percentage of those who scored 15 or above. Although women demonstrated statistically higher total dental anxiety scores than men (p= 0.03), the difference between both genders was small and could be clinically insignificant. The students were anxious mostly about tooth drilling and local anesthetic injection. CONCLUSIONS: Lack of adequate dental health education may result in a high level of dental anxiety among non-dental university students in Jordan. Further studies are required to identify the correlates of dental anxiety among university students

The Educational approach included in Al-Hadid Sura

    Get PDF
The study aims to show the educational approaches included in A/-Hadid Sura. This will be done through emphasizing the linguistic patterns utilized in the Sura as a means of communication. The importance of the study stems from the fact that the linguistic educational approach has had a major role in making people accept the principles of Islam. The article makes use of the inductive/deductive approach. It is structured along two sections: the first introduces Al-Hadid Sura, its virtues, the implication of its title, and the most important subjects it deals with. The second section is concerned with introducing the concept of education and educational approaches, a presentation of some of the most important Quranic educational approaches, such as education though glorifications, comparisons, instructions, guidance, attraction, threats, dialogue, the good example, culpability, providing evidence, developing resemblance, and repetition. The study has revealed that the educational Qur’anic approach is crucial in shaping a consistent personality of the believer. It also has underscored how the Qur‘an includes educational approaches comparable to modern educational approaches, and that it has a significant influence on deepening people’s theological knowledge and enhancing their code of behavior to achieve, hereby, happiness in this world and be rewarded in the hereafter

High Serum Erythropoietin and Ferritin Levels in Conjunction with Anemia Response in Malignant Lymphoma

    Get PDF
Anemia is a common finding in lymphoma. There are few data available regarding the erythropoietin (EPO) levels in conjunction with ferritin in lymphoma patients. We prospectively evaluated 55 patients diagnosed with malignant lymphoma during the period between November 2006 and March 2008 at the King Abdullah University Teaching Hospital, Jordan. Our data showed that 74.4% of lymphoma patients were anemic. Furthermore, serum EPO and ferritin levels were higher in lymphoma patients compared with the healthy controls (P=0.001). The observed versus predicted EPO ratio showed also significantly higher levels in anemic lymphoma patients compared to healthy controls (p=0.03). There was an improvement in the Hb level in lymphoma patients who were treated with at least 3-cycles of chemotherapy as compared with newly-diagnosed patients. An adequate increase of EPO levels was observed in anemic lymphoma patients and notably associated with higher ferritin levels and improvement of Hb (p<0.001)

Conformational analysis of macrolides with 18-ring membered has been carried out using molecular mechanics calculations and molecular dynamics. A high conformational mobility of no complexed macrocycles has been obtained and an important stereoselectivity has been observed for the complexed macrocycles. For 18d macrolide, which was presented by a privileged conformer with 20.1% without complex, was populated with 50.1% in presence of Fe(CO)3. For the most privileged conformer geometry; the α,β-unsaturated ester group has an s-cis conformation with a torsion angle φ1: O19-C2-C3-C4 = 14.5° for macrocycle 18d macrolide and φ1: O19-C2-C3-C4 = 25.0° for 18s macrolide. The diene group has an s-trans conformation with a torsion angle φ2:C11-C12-C13-C14 = 169.4° for 18d macrolide and φ2:C10-C11-C12-C13 = 179.5° for 18s macrolide.

Low molecular weight chitosan–insulin polyelectrolyte complex: characterization and stability studies

    Get PDF
The aim of the work reported herein was to investigate the effect of various low molecular weight chitosans (LMWCs) on the stability of insulin using USP HPLC methods. Insulin was found to be stable in a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) consisting of insulin and LMWC in the presence of a Tris-buffer at pH 6.5. In the presence of LMWC, the stability of insulin increased with decreasing molecular weight of LMWC; 13 kDa LMWC was the most efficient molecular weight for enhancing the physical and chemical stability of insulin. Solubilization of insulin-LMWC polyelectrolyte complex (I-LMWC PEC) in a reverse micelle (RM) system, administered to diabetic rats, results in an oral delivery system for insulin with acceptable bioactivity
