    Get PDF
Information Communication Technology (ICT) offers an abundance of benefits to users especially in socio-economic aspects. Rural youth are one group of users that has experienced such benefits. They are able to access more opportunities due to their superior ICT knowledge and compatibility. This study aims to identify the potential benefits of ICT usage for rural youth development. Through document analyses and review of literature, it can be concluded that the benefits offered from ICT usage towards youth development can be categorized in the aspects of competency, character, confidence, caring, connection and contribution. With all of these aspects of potential benefits in place, it is hoped that consistent involvement from youths in rural development can be ensured

A systematic review of qualitative research on the role of ICTs in sustainable livelihood

    Get PDF
In the recent past, the role of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in promoting socio-economic development and sustainable livelihoods has become the subject of heated debate. Nevertheless, an insufficient number of studies have systematically reviewed the growing influence of ICTs. In the present study, a systematic review is conducted to evaluate and examine qualitative studies that have explored the role of ICTs in contributing to sustainable livelihoods. Researchers performed a systematic literature review of studies written in English and published between January, 2007 and April, 2014. Inclusion and exclusion principles were employed to identify studies of any qualitative design that examined the concept of sustainable livelihoods through the lens of accumulation of assets in order to evaluate the purposes for which ICTs are utilized and also to review the impact that ICTs have had on various aspects of life. Researchers screened and retrieved all titles and abstracts and potentially relevant studies to establish whether the study met the inclusion criteria, yielding a total of 15 primary studies. Researchers then extracted the precise findings of studies that were relevant to the review through ATLAS.ti7 software in order to allow us to code the key themes, sub-themes and inter-relationships. The results of the review reveal that ICTs have certain influences on sustainable livelihoods and that this influence applies to human, social, financial, physical and natural assets. This review has the potential to address managerial problems by creating a reliable knowledge base that accumulates findings from the selected studies and highlights opportunities for further research

Structural equation modeling test for relationship between selected leadership competencies and effective academic leadership styles

    Get PDF
How can an academic leader become more effective? This research question is examined in the context of middle-level leadership in Malaysian research universities as World Class Universities. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between six leadership competencies and their relationship to four Effective Academic Leadership Styles (EALS) in the present context of globalization and academic excellence. Based on results in Structural Equation Modeling, contributions of leadership competencies depend on leadership styles in certain situations. Most of the competencies have relationships to EALS, except for two dimensions, organizational strategy and communication. Finally, systematic leadership development programs should be developed in research universities

An investigation into factors influencing rural youth entrepreneurs' intentions to use ICT: a case of Malaysia

    Get PDF
Attention has been paid in Malaysia to the potential for information communication technology (ICT) being a key driver of competitive advantage, and the opportunity to benefit rural youth entrepreneurs. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop additional constructs, or 'entrepreneurial knowledge' (EK), to the entrepreneurial potential model (and thus validating it in the context of ICT) in order to augment factors influencing rural youth entrepreneurs' intention to use ICT. In this research, the data from 400 rural youth entrepreneurs were examined using SEM to analyse hypothesised causes as suggested in our proposed model. Results showed that attitude and EK significantly influenced the Malaysian rural youth entrepreneurial intention (EI) to use ICT. This paper demonstrates that the new model is capable of evaluating the causal flow that leads to the intentional behaviour between the suggested external factors and also makes useful contributions to the literature on EI, which could assist policymakers in creating successful ICT intervention strategies to support Malay rural youth entrepreneurs

Predictors of entrepreneurial intention among youths in Malaysia

This study aims to examine the factors affecting entrepreneurial intention among youths in Malaysia. This study is quantitative in nature, and made use of a questionnaire as the main data-collection tool. Via multi-stage cluster sampling, a total of 400 youths from four districts in Peninsular Malaysia were selected as respondents. The analysis confirmed that all of the factors studied were found to have positive and significant relationship with entrepreneurial intention. Further analysis concluded three factors, namely attitude towards entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship knowledge and perceived feasibility, are the most significant factors contributing towards entrepreneurial intention among youth. These three factors (attitude towards entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship knowledge and perceived feasibility) need to be given particular emphasis in order to promote entrepreneurship intention among the target group. In other words, if these three factors among the target group were to be strengthened, there would be a greater likelihood that the group's entrepreneurship intention would be increased
