Hypoid gear vehicle axle efficiency
© 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.In this paper, a study of a hypoid gear vehicle axle is presented. Using a custom rig, load-independent losses have been accurately measured and the effect of viscosity on spin loss has been quantified. Solution methods for the calculation of component losses are presented and combined into a complete thermally coupled transient model for the estimation of axle efficiency. An analysis of hypoid gear kinematics reveals a simplification, commonly adopted by other researchers, regarding the velocity of the point of contact in hypoid gears, to be in error. As a result, the calculation of lubrication parameters has been improved. Finally, experimental measurements are compared to the generated simulation results for a number of operating scenarios and satisfactory correlation is observed
Evolution of magnetic fields through cosmological perturbation theory
The origin of galactic and extra-galactic magnetic fields is an unsolved
problem in modern cosmology. A possible scenario comes from the idea of these
fields emerged from a small field, a seed, which was produced in the early
universe (phase transitions, inflation, ...) and it evolves in time.
Cosmological perturbation theory offers a natural way to study the evolution of
primordial magnetic fields. The dynamics for this field in the cosmological
context is described by a cosmic dynamo like equation, through the dynamo term.
In this paper we get the perturbed Maxwell's equations and compute the energy
momentum tensor to second order in perturbation theory in terms of gauge
invariant quantities. Two possible scenarios are discussed, first we consider a
FLRW background without magnetic field and we study the perturbation theory
introducing the magnetic field as a perturbation. The second scenario, we
consider a magnetized FLRW and build up the perturbation theory from this

Nonlinear vortex light beams supported and stabilized by dissipation
We describe nonlinear Bessel vortex beams as localized and stationary
solutions with embedded vorticity to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with
a dissipative term that accounts for the multi-photon absorption processes
taking place at high enough powers in common optical media. In these beams,
power and orbital angular momentum are permanently transferred to matter in the
inner, nonlinear rings, at the same time that they are refueled by spiral
inward currents of energy and angular momentum coming from the outer linear
rings, acting as an intrinsic reservoir. Unlike vortex solitons and dissipative
vortex solitons, the existence of these vortex beams does not critically depend
on the precise form of the dispersive nonlinearities, as Kerr self-focusing or
self-defocusing, and do not require a balancing gain. They have been shown to
play a prominent role in "tubular" filamentation experiments with powerful,
vortex-carrying Bessel beams, where they act as attractors in the beam
propagation dynamics. Nonlinear Bessel vortex beams provide indeed a new
solution to the problem of the stable propagation of ring-shaped vortex light
beams in homogeneous self-focusing Kerr media. A stability analysis
demonstrates that there exist nonlinear Bessel vortex beams with single or
multiple vorticity that are stable against azimuthal breakup and collapse, and
that the mechanism that renders these vortexes stable is dissipation. The
stability properties of nonlinear Bessel vortex beams explain the experimental

An analytical approach for prediction of elastohydrodynamic friction with inlet shear heating and starvation
An analytical friction model is presented, predicting the coefficient of friction in elastohydrodynamic (EHD) contacts. Three fully formulated SAE 75W-90 axle lubricants are examined. The effect of inlet shear heating (ISH) and starvation is accounted for in the developed friction model. The film thickness and the predicted friction are compared with experimental measurements obtained through optical interferometry and use of a mini traction machine. The results indicate the significant contribution of ISH and starvation on both the film thickness and coefficient of friction. A strong interaction between those two phenomena is also demonstrated, along with their individual and combined contribution on the EHD friction
Heat generation and transfer in automotive dry clutch engagement
Dynamic behaviour of automotive dry clutches depends on the frictional characteristics of the contact between the friction lining material, the flywheel, and the pressure plate during the clutch engagement process. During engagement due to high interfacial slip and relatively high contact pressures, generated friction gives rise to contact heat, which affects the material behaviour and the associated frictional characteristics. In practice excess interfacial slipping and generated heat during torque transmission can result in wear of the lining, thermal distortion of the friction disc, and reduced useful life of the clutch. This paper provides measurement of friction lining characteristics for dry clutches for new and worn state under representative operating conditions pertaining to interfacial slipping during clutch engagement, applied contact pressures, and generated temperatures. An analytical thermal partitioning network model of the clutch assembly, incorporating the flywheel, friction lining, and the pressure plate is presented, based upon the principle of conservation of energy. The results of the analysis show a higher coefficient of friction for the new lining material which reduces the extent of interfacial slipping during clutch engagement, thus reducing the frictional power loss and generated interfacial heating. The generated heat is removed less efficiently from worn lining. This might be affected by different factors observed such as the reduced lining thickness and the reduction of density of the material but mainly because of poorer thermal conductivity due to the depletion of copper particles in its microstructure as the result of wear. The study integrates frictional characteristics, microstructural composition, mechanisms of heat generation, effect of lining wear, and heat transfer in a fundamental manner, an approach not hitherto reported in literature
Affine differential geometry analysis of human arm movements
Humans interact with their environment through sensory information and motor actions. These interactions may be understood via the underlying geometry of both perception and action. While the motor space is typically considered by default to be Euclidean, persistent behavioral observations point to a different underlying geometric structure. These observed regularities include the “two-thirds power law” which connects path curvature with velocity, and “local isochrony” which prescribes the relation between movement time and its extent. Starting with these empirical observations, we have developed a mathematical framework based on differential geometry, Lie group theory and Cartan’s moving frame method for the analysis of human hand trajectories. We also use this method to identify possible motion primitives, i.e., elementary building blocks from which more complicated movements are constructed. We show that a natural geometric description of continuous repetitive hand trajectories is not Euclidean but equi-affine. Specifically, equi-affine velocity is piecewise constant along movement segments, and movement execution time for a given segment is proportional to its equi-affine arc-length. Using this mathematical framework, we then analyze experimentally recorded drawing movements. To examine movement segmentation and classification, the two fundamental equi-affine differential invariants—equi-affine arc-length and curvature are calculated for the recorded movements. We also discuss the possible role of conic sections, i.e., curves with constant equi-affine curvature, as motor primitives and focus in more detail on parabolas, the equi-affine geodesics. Finally, we explore possible schemes for the internal neural coding of motor commands by showing that the equi-affine framework is compatible with the common model of population coding of the hand velocity vector when combined with a simple assumption on its dynamics.
