Study of image characteristics on digital image correlation error assessment
In this paper, errors related to digital image correlation (DIC) technique applied to measurements of displacements are estimated. This work is based on the generation of synthetic images representative of real speckle patterns. With these images, various parameters are treated in order to determine their impact on the measurement error. These parameters are related to the type of deformation imposed on the speckle, the speckle itself (encoding of the image, image saturation) or the software (subset size)
Identification of materials properties using displacement field measurement
The aim of this work is to identify parameters driving constitutive equations of materials with displacement field measurements carried out by image stereo-correlation during an unidirectional tensile test. We evaluate two identification techniques. The first one is the virtual fields method which consists in writing the principle of virtual work with particular virtual fields. It is generally used in the case of linear elasticity and it requires a perfect knowledge of the model in terms of boundary condition since the virtual fields used must be kinematically admissible. This method allows to determine parameters by a direct and fast calculation, without iterations. The second method is the finite element model updating method. It consists in finding constitutive parameters that achieve the best match between finite element analysis quantities and their experimental counterparts. This method is more adaptable than the virtual field method but it needs to spend more calculation time
Global and local identification on composte material
One of the main challenges in composite design and development is to be able to compute the damage state at any point of a composite structure during a complex loading. In this context, knowledge of the spatial distribution of the material elastic properties provides a quantitative estimation of the damage level and localization. The work presented here intends to access to such distribution through the association of kinematic fields and finite element model updating method. Such iterative technique has many interesting advantages for structural analysis and industrial requirements, including the numerical framework, the ability to explore complex shapes and loads and a treatment based on surface measurement without any assumption on volume distribution
The development of a model for the assessment of the subject entrepreneurship and business management at the N4 level using an outcomes based education approach
The focus of this study is on assessment in an Outcomes Based Education environment. The question arises as to how assessment of Entrepreneurship and Business Management-N4 can be changed to suit an Outcomes Based Education approach. Action research was used as the research methodology and the findings were reported as case studies. A sample of three colleges in the Eastern Cape was chosen to take part in the study. Only two modules of the Entrepreneurship and Business Management-N4 syllabus were adapted to suit an Outcomes Based Education approach, as the students still had to write the normal external examination at the end of the semester as required by the Department of Education. In the first two cycles the participants implemented Outcomes Based Education in the classroom using only the resources available at the college for the old education system. During the third cycle the researcher implemented Outcomes Based Education in the classroom under the same circumstances, but with the advantage that the researcher benefited from the reflections of the first two cycles. In order for assessment to meet the requirements of an Outcomes Based Education approach, it was necessary to change teaching practices as well. Important aspects such as group work, new assessment methods, the role of resource materials and the training of lecturers were included in the study. At the end of the third cycle a model for the assessment of Entrepreneurship and Business Management-N4 was developed. Recommendations on aspects such as students, lecturers, resources and assessment were made
Experimental investigation on the effect of nanostructuration on the adherence properties of epoxy adhesives by a probe tack test
In this work, we aimed to characterize the energy of adherence of nanoscale structured epoxy adhesives Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A/Methylene–diethylaniline(DGEBA/MDEA)induced by phase separation triblock copolymers Poly(MethacrylatedeMethyl)-b-Poly(ButylAcrylate)-b-Poly(MethylMethacrylate) (PMMA-b-PBA-b-PMMA) at gel state by a probe tack test,which is an original use of this kind of test for thermoset adhesives. For a set of mechanical parameters(probe’s roughness,contacttime,contact pressure and debonding velocity),we measured the energy of adherence for both neat and filled adhesives. The probe tack test was performed at different steps of gelation. We compared the behavior of the adhesives and evaluated the dissipation contribution to the energy of adherence of the adhesives during the test. We finally discussed the nanoparticles'influence on the competition between cavitation and fibrillation. We report that the addition of nanoparticles leads to an overall improvement of the energy of adherence, with a significant increase of the dissipation contribution to the energy measured
Strong enhancement of two-photon absorption properties in synergic 'semi-disconnected' multiporphyrin assemblies designed for combined imaging and photodynamic therapy.
International audienceThe synthesis and photophysical properties of new multiporphyrin assemblies are described. Their design, based on a smooth electronic disconnection between two-photon absorbing (2PA) octupolar or quadrupolar cores and the peripheral porphyrins, leads to a major increase in (non-resonant) 2PA responses in the NIR, while fully retaining the fluorescence and photosensitization properties of isolated porphyrins. This approach, which involves electronic coupling of semi-disconnected moieties in the higher excited states of the synergic systems, is of interest to fully benefit from the advantages of selective 2PA for application in combined two-photon high resolution imaging and photodynamic therapy
Copper-induced oxidative stress in three-spined stickleback : relationship with hepatic metal levels
International audienceThe aim of this study was to characterise biomarker responses in three-spined sticklebacks exposed to copper. For this purpose, adult sticklebacks were exposed for 3 weeks to copper sulphate at 0. 25 100 and 200 mug L-1 as Cu. At days 4, 8, 12 and 21. several parameters were measured including liver, gonad and spleen somatic indexes, hepatic biomarkers (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD). glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione (GSH), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD)) and hepatic copper and zinc concentrations. Copper induced a rapid and transient increase of antioxidant enzymes and a depletion of gluiathione content during the first 8 days of exposure. Significant copper and zinc accumulation in fish liver were observed for the two higher exposure concentrations after 8 and 12 days, respectively. This study showed that copper induced an oxidative stress in fish liver before significant metal accumulation in the liver could be detected, suggesting the involvement of differential mechanisms in copper uptake and metabolism. Are plants useful as accumulation indicators of metal bioavailability?
International audienceThe use of accumulation bioindicator to assess metal bioavailability has mainly concerned individual species. This work addresses this issue at the plant community level. Metal content within different species from plant communities found at three contaminated and one uncontaminated site was compared. Results showed that for two contaminated sites, leaf metals concentrations were comparable to those in plants from control site, i.e. approx (mg/kg) 0.1 Cd, 0.2 Cr, 9.2 Cu, 1.8 Ni, 0.5 Pb and 42 Zn. Only plants from the third site showed higher metal contents, ranging from 1.5- to 8-fold those of the control community. This contrasted with ammonium acetate-EDTA extractions, which indicated a very high "availability" of metals at the three sites, as compared to the control site. Thus, metal content in plant communities provided accurate information on actual transfer toward the ensemble of vegetation, which could be used to establish site-specific "fingerprints" of metal bioavailability
Emulsions Stabilized by Gum Arabic: Composition and Packing within Interfacial Films
Gum arabic is a heterogeneous natural hydrocolloid commonly used in the agro-food industry to provide metastability to oil-in-water emulsions. Since aqueous solutions of gum arabic contain a complex mixture of protein/polysaccharide conjugates, the composition of interfacial films is expected to differ from the bulk composition. Here, we investigate the composition of interfacial films in oil/water emulsions stabilized by gum arabic at various concentrations, pH and salinity. Using both size exclusion and hydrophobic interaction chromatography separations, we show that the interface is enriched in protein-rich species displaying a broad range of sizes. These species are irreversibly adsorbed as monolayers at the oil/water interface. We observe that the surface coverage density, or packing, of the adsorbed species at oil/water interfaces drastically increases with both the increasing gum concentration and decreasing ionic repulsions, through increasing the ionic strength or decreasing the pH. Strikingly, these packing changes correspond to only minor composition changes in the adsorbed layer. We thus conclude that the key parameter modified in different formulations is the conformation of the adsorbed species rather than their composition distribution. These findings can be readily used to adjust the amount of gum arabic necessary to produce metastable emulsions
