MammoApplet: an interactive Java applet tool for manual annotation in medical imaging

Web-based applications in computational medicine have become increasingly important during the last years. The rapid growth of the World Wide Web supposes a new paradigm in the telemedicine and eHealth areas in order to assist and enhance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients. Furthermore, training of radiologists and management of medical databases are also becoming increasingly important issues in the field. In this paper, we present MammoApplet , an interactive Java applet interface designed as a web-based tool. It aims to facilitate the diagnosis of new mammographic cases by providing a set of image processing tools that allow a better visualization of the images, and a set of drawing tools, used to annotate the suspicious regions. Each annotation allows including the attributes considered by the experts when issuing the final diagnosis. The overall set of overlays is stored in a database as XML files associated with the original images. On the Use of XML in Medical Imaging Web-Based Applications

The rapid growth of digital technology in medical fields over recent years has increased the need for applications able to manage patient medical records, imaging data, and chart information. Web-based applications are implemented with the purpose to link digital databases, storage and transmission protocols, management of large volumes of data and security concepts, allowing the possibility to read, analyze, and even diagnose remotely from the medical center where the information was acquired. The objective of this paper is to analyze the use of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) language in web-based applications that aid in diagnosis or treatment of patients, considering how this protocol allows indexing and exchanging the huge amount of information associated with each medical case. Un ABP basado en la robótica para las ingenierías informáticas

Estos últimos años estamos asistiendo a una disminución en la entrada de alumnos en las titulaciones tecnológicas debida a la falta de motivación de los estudiantes por unos estudios técnicos que implican un gran esfuerzo para su superación. Por otra parte, los alumnos que entran en los primeros cursos se encuentran a menudo con un conjunto de materias distintas a las esperadas y las perciben desconectadas entre sí. Ambas circunstancias contribuyen de forma importante a la disminución de la promoción de estudiantes en las titulaciones técnicas. Este artículo presenta un ABP (Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas) que utiliza la robótica. Actualmente, la experiencia se está desarrollando en l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria y l’Escola Tècnica en Informàtica de Sabadell. El objetivo principal es el de aumentar la motivación de los alumnos que llegan a primer curso de la titulación sin que por ello se disminuyan los contenidos técnicos estipulados en los planes de estudio vigentes. La novedad principal con respecto a experiencias anteriores radica en que los alumnos trabajaran aspectos de software y hardware de modo coordinado, utilizando un robot como arquitectura común. El artículo se organiza de la siguiente forma: en la introducción se explica la situación actual y los objetivos del trabajo, luego se exponen ciertos trabajos que son precedentes en los que esta basada nuestra experiencia, en el punto 3 se desarrolla la planificación del ABP, discute sobre las competencias que el ABP puede añadir en estas primeras materias del plan de estudios y después presenta la implantación del ABP.Peer Reviewe

Usefulness of collaborative work in the evaluation of prostate cancer from MRI

The aim of this study is to show the usefulness of collaborative work in the evaluation of prostate cancer from T2-weighted MRI using a dedicated software tool. The variability of annotations on images of the prostate gland (central and peripheral zones as well as tumour) by two independent experts was firstly evaluated, and secondly compared with a consensus between these two experts. Using a prostate MRI database, experts drew regions of interest (ROIs) corresponding to healthy prostate (peripheral and central zones) and cancer. One of the experts then drew the ROI with knowledge of the other expert’s ROI. The surface area of each ROI was used to measure the Hausdorff distance and the Dice coefficient was measured from the respective contours. They were evaluated between the different experiments, taking the annotations of the second expert as the reference. The results showed that the significant differences between the two experts disappeared with collaborative work. To conclude, this study shows that collaborative work with a dedicated tool allows consensus between expertise in the evaluation of prostate cancer from T2-weighted MRI.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

L'agenda virtual d'activitats d'aprenentatge com a eina educativa

La metodologia docent impulsada per la creació d'un espai europeu d'educació superior comú implica tenir en compte el treball de l'estudiant. En aquest sentit, i per donar suport al procés d'aprenentatge dels alumnes, s'ha desenvolupat un procediment d'elaboració d'agendes d'activitats a partir de guies docents d'assignatures ja expressades en ECTS, és a dir, en les que es dóna informació de la dedicació dels estudiants tant a les tasques presencials com a les no presencials. En aquest article es presenta aquest procés de transformació i les primeres experiències d'ús de les agendes d'activitats d'aprenentatge com a eines per facilitar l'adaptació dels alumnes a les noves metodologies docents, fomentar el desenvolupament de competències transversals, com la de la gestió del temps i de l'assumpció de responsabilitats, millorar aspectes de les competències específiques i, en definitiva, per fer-los part activa del seu aprenentatge.La metodología docente impulsada por la creación de un Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior común implica tener en cuenta el trabajo del estudiante. En este sentido, y para dar apoyo al proceso de aprendizaje de los alumnos, se ha desarrollado un procedimiento de elaboración de agendas de actividades a partir de guías docentes de asignaturas ya expresadas en ECTS, es decir, en las que se ofrece información sobre la dedicación de los estudiantes tanto a las tareas presenciales como a las no presenciales. En este artículo se presenta este proceso de transformación y las primeras experiencias de uso de las agendas de actividades de aprendizaje como herramienta para facilitar la adaptación de los alumnos a las nuevas metodologías docentes, fomentar el desarrollo de competencias transversales -como la gestión del tiempo y la asunción de responsabilidades-, mejorar aspectos de las competencias específicas y, en definitiva, convertirlos en parte activa de su propio aprendizaje.The teaching methodology being promoted via the creation of a common European Higher Education Area means taking the student's work into account. In this sense, and in order to support students' learning process, a procedure was developed that involved drawing up calendars of activities based on teaching guides for courses that are already expressed in ECTS, that is, in which information is provided on how much time students should spend on both classroom and independent learning tasks. MamoDB:a web-based tool for training radiologists in the diagnosis of digital mammography

The massive growth in applications of radiological imaging and image-guided treatments has met a worldwide shortage of trained radiologists. Therefore, several computer-based radiology training environments, which combine traditional learning opportunities with advanced e-learning platforms, have recently been developed with the goal of supporting the acquisition of radiological expertise. However, the quantity and quality of clinical experience arises as the main issue to ensure the success for such learning environments when training radiologists to interpret medical images. In this sense, MamoDB is a research web-based tool which has been customized in order to incorporate learning capabilities for training and guidance of newly employed or resident radiologists.
