The Louisiana Sinfonietta, a new orchestral model, and an original composition, Concerto for Guitar and Symphony Orchestra, Op. 12

This dissertation is divided into two parts. Part one is a historical paper about the chamber orchestra known as The Louisiana Sinfonietta and is divided into seven chapters. In the introduction I explain the methods used to conduct this research. Chapter one is an introduction that discusses the problem of the possible end of the long tradition of the symphony orchestra. Chapter one also investigates how the organizational model used by the Louisiana Sinfonietta may be a sign of a new orchestral model, one that may solve many of the problems that orchestras are facing today. Chapters two, three, and four investigate the history of the orchestra from 1981 until 2009. Chapter five outlines the Louisiana Sinfonietta repertoire. In this chapter I compare what the Louisiana Sinfonietta performs and what the average orchestra in the United States performs. Chapter six is a series of five interviews with people concerning the history of the Louisiana Sinfonietta. Chapter seven presents conclusions based on the preceding chapters. Part two is an original composition: Concerto for Guitar and Symphony Orchestra, Op. 12. The piece is scored for symphony orchestra and solo guitar and is divided into five movements in which I use different orchestral combinations in order to create different colors and atmospheres. Analysis, Design and Implementation of Biodiesel Projects in Brazil

During the oil crisis of the seventies, Brazil has developed a successful program for gasoline substitution by ethanol (Proálcool). Nowadays the biomass accounts for 27% of total national energy consumed in Brazil and the ethanol participates with 40% of the total national fuel consumption of Otto cycle vehicles. In 2004, the National Program for the Production and Use of Biodiesel (Biodiesel Program) was launched. One priority of the Biodiesel Program is the inclusion of family agriculture and smallholders into the production chain. The Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) has developed a software for the analysis of biodiesel projects with the participation of family agriculture. Results of production chain analysis and economic indicators calculated by the Biosoft system have allowed identifying the regular supply of oil at competitive prices as the key point to the efficiency of biodiesel production chains. The use of oil cake as feedstock is the leverage point of chain performance. The meal sale can lead to a vegetal oil price reduction, without compromising farmers´ income, since they can be able to set up their own oil extraction plants. Imagens da cidade e imagens de si na formação em arte

Este artigo apresenta reflexões sobre a metodologia do ensino de arte em que a cidade e o meio passam a ser aspectos importantes da aprendizagem. A partir de uma ação docente em arte (um estudo de caso) desenvolvida com estudantes em escola pública do distrito de Irerê, cidade de Londrina, Estado do Paraná – Brasil, foi desenvolvida uma proposição cujo foco maior era estabelecer vínculos entre os educandos e o espaço urbano e rural em que vivem, de modo que, como na visão de Yi-Fu Tuan, o espaço fosse transformado em lugar. Nas abordagens convencionais do ensino, leituras e releituras de imagens da história da arte são o centro do ensinar e aprender, sendo descartadas histórias e vozes daquele que vê, lê, e vivencia a aprendizagem. Partindo do universo pessoal dos sujeitos envolvidos, a pesquisa aponta para a possibilidade daquilo que temos chamado de metodologia da presença. Tal metodologia está voltada para a ocupação por parte do educando de um maior posicionamento nos processos de formação em arte.
