Produção em massa de Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lep., Pyralidae). I. Selecção da produção em massa e complemento alimentar da dieta com aditivos minerais.

A produção à escala industrial de Ephestia kuehniella ZELLER (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae), hospedeiro intermediário para a multiplicação dos Tricogramas (parasitóides oófagos), necessita de estudos dos factores bióticos e abióticos, quantitativos e qualitativos, condicionantes da cultura. Adoptou-se, por razões de baixo custo e disponibilidade no mercado local, como dieta alimentar para o estado larvar a farinha inteira de milho amarelo. As principais condições climatéricas do laboratório são mantidas constantes ao longo do ciclo do insecto. Realizámos vários ensaios variando a quantidade do alimento, analisando-se estatisticamente os seguintes parâmetros biológicos: duração do ciclo; heterogeneidade de emergência dos adultos; mortalidade e (ou) canibalismo; peso dos insectos; fecundidade e ritmo de postura. Noutro ensaio, incorporaram-se na farinha de milho, aditivos minerais habitualmente utilizados na produção animal. Os resultados obtidos são comparados estatisticamente com os obtidos com a dieta simples de farinha inteira de milho amarelo. Estes ensaios permitiram-nos, para os parâmetros biológicos estudados, avaliar a quantidade e qualidade da produção deste hospedeiro tendo em conta a sua maior rentabilidade.ABSTRACT: Large scale industrial production of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae), intermediate host for multiplication of trichogramma (oophagous parasitoids), needs quantitative and qualitative studies of the biotic and abiotic factors conditioning their culture. For reasons of low cost and availability at the local market, integral yellow corn flour was chosen as diet for the larval stage. Main climatic conditions were kept constant in the lab through the life cycle of the insect. Several trials were conducted by varying the amount of food, statistically analyzing the following biological parameters: duration of the cycle; heterogeneity of adult emergence; mortality and (or) cannibalism; weight of the insects; fecundity and egg-laying rhythm. In another trial, mineral additives usually used in animal production were incorporated in the corn flour. The results were compared statistically with those obtained with the simple diet of integral flour of yellow corn. These trials allowed, for the studied biological parameters, to evaluate the quantity and the quality of the production of this host taking into account its highest profitability

Energy absorption from composite reinforced with high performance auxetic textile structure

The objective of this study is to analyze the impact behavior on the basis of energy approach of weft knitted structures, namely a jersey composite and an auxetic composite using high performance yarns. Weft knitted fabrics were produced with the same structural and machine parameters, using 100% para-aramid and hybrid (47% para-aramid and 53% polyamide) structure. Composite fabrication was achieved through hand lay-up using epoxy resin. Negative Poisson ratio of the reinforcing auxetic fabric was transferred from the fabric to the composite developed. Results obtained by drop weight dart impact test show that the impact experiment with different impact loads confirmed the auxetic composites, regardless de material composition, have an increase in the total energy absorption compared to jersey reinforced composite, approximately 2.5 and 4 times more for para-aramid and hybrid composite, respectively. Auxetic composites developed within this work present great potential for applications in different areas, mainly where energy absorption is a key factor to be considered, such as in protection, sports among others

A Unary Semigroup Trace Algebra

The Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) of Hoare and He promote the unification of semantics catering for different concerns, such as, termination, data modelling, concurrency and time. Process calculi like Circus and CSP can be given semantics in the UTP using reactive designs whose traces can be abstractly specified using a monoid trace algebra. The prefix order over traces is defined in terms of the monoid operator. This order, however, is inadequate to characterise a broader family of timed process algebras whose traces are preordered instead. To accommodate these, we propose a unary semigroup trace algebra that is weaker than the monoid algebra. This structure satisfies some of the axioms of restriction semigroups and is a right P-Ehresmann semigroup. Reactive designs specified using it satisfy core laws that have been mechanised so far in Isabelle/UTP. More importantly, our results improve the support for unifying trace models in the UTP

Produção em massa de Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lep., Pyralidae). II. Alterações da temperatura e humidade relativa durante o seu ciclo biológico.

Em trabalho anterior (Tavares et al., neste volume) analisou-se a produção de Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lep., Pyralidae) em culturas isoladas ou em grupos não superiores a duas centenas. No entanto, para satisfazer a produção em larga escala de parasitoides oófagos do género trichogramma e de predadores coccinelídeos, foi exigida uma cultura em massa do citado hospedeiro, onde, em cada unidade de produção (tabuleiro com 70 x 24 x 4 cm), estão em coabitação cerca de 10.000 indivíduos durante o ciclo pré-imaginal. Em tais condições, foram analisadas as alterações da temperatura e da humidade relativa, tanto na população como no interior do laboratório, verificando-se que, ao nível da população, a temperatura sofreu alterações significativas, atingindo níveis superiores a 8 °C.ABSTRACT: In a previous work (Tavares et al., this volume), the production of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lep., Pyralidae) in isolated cultures or in groups not over two hundred individuals was analysed. However, in order to achieve large scale production of oophagous parasitoids of the genus Trichogramma and of coccinellid predators, mass culture of the host was necessary, where in each production unit (a 70 x 24 x 24 cm container) about 10.000 individuals live together during the pre-imaginal cycle. In such conditions, changes in temperature and relative humidity were analysed, not only in the population but also inside the laboratory, and it was recorded that, at the population level, the temperature registered significant changes, reaching levels above 8 °C

The dyad partnership-credibility and the qualification of suppliers

The need to improve relations between company and supplier suggests that the dyad partnership and credibility must be enhanced in order to maximize gains for both parties that would otherwise not take place. This study demonstrates that companies and suppliers feel the need to review the results achieved by both parties and to influence the way they treat their relationships in the supply of goods and services. This study highlights the need to explore two aspects: firstly, the focus of the importance of supplier partnership for improvement of the company and, secondly, the need to create links based in credibility for the improvement of relations between company and supplier, in order to establish a win-win process in their purchasing and supplying activities. This research applied a questionnaire to 154 elements of various industrial segments. The results confirm the widespread perception on the part of elements of the companies of the need for deepening the partnership between company and supplier, but it verified, however, less openness with regard to the sharing of knowledge, which can be an obstacle to the realization of this deepening. The analysis is done under the perspective of the qualification of suppliers
