In vitro experiments allow precise measurement and control over relevant physiological variables. Thus, in the present study we have used a lithography technique to fabricate a rectangular PDMS microchannel with a bifurcation. By using a confocal micro-PTV system, we have measured the effect of bifurcation on the flow behaviour of both fluorescent particles diluted in pure water and red blood cells (RBCs) in concentrated suspensions. After performing simulations with the commercial finite element software package POLYFLOW®, some experimental results were compared with the numerical results. Our preliminary results suggest that the RBC paths may suffer fluctuations on the transversal direction caused by RBCs obstruction around the neighbourhood of the diverging point of the bifurcation

Motions of particles and red blood cells in a bifurcation: comparison between experiments and numerical simulations

The blood flow dynamics in microcirculation depends strongly on the microvascular networks composed with short irregular vessel segments which are linked by numerous bifurcations. This paper presents the application of a confocal micro-PTV system to track RBCs through a rectangular polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) microchannel with a bifurcation. By using a confocal micro-PTV system, we have measured the effect of bifurcation on the flow behaviour of both fluorescent particles diluted in pure water and RBCs in concentrated suspensions. After performing simulations with the commercial finite element software package POLYFLOW®, some experimental results were compared with the numerical results. Our preliminary qualitative results suggest that the in vitro blood flowing (Re = 0.007) through a bifurcation seems to have a tendency to behave more closely as a Power law model than as a Carreau or Newtonian model. This study was supported in part by the Portuguese Government by a grant of the Science and Technology Foundation (BII/UNI/0532/EME/2008)

Meningoradiculitis Due To Cryptococcus Neofermans In An Immunocompetent Patient.

Meningoradiculitis refers to combined involvement of meninges and nerve roots. The most frequent location is the lumbosacral region. Etiology is diverse, including inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic disorders. Meningoradiculitis is a rare form of involvement in cryptococcal infection. We describe a case of subacute lower limbs flaccid paresis diagnosed as lumbosacral meningoradiculitis in view of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory changes and typical enhancement on MRI of lumbar spine. Cryptococcus neoformans was isolated from CSF. Extensive screening yielded no immunodeficiencies.62147-

Aryl-capped lysine-dehydroamino acid dipeptide supergelators as potential drug release systems

Employing amino acids and peptides as molecular building blocks provides unique opportunities for generating supramolecular hydrogels, owing to their inherent biological origin, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, they can suffer from proteolytic degradation. Short peptides (<8 amino acids) attached to an aromatic capping group are particularly attractive alternatives for minimalistic low molecular weight hydrogelators. Peptides with low critical gelation concentrations (CGCs) are especially desirable, as the low weight percentage required for gelation makes them more cost-effective and reduces toxicity. In this work, three dehydrodipeptides were studied for their self-assembly properties. The results showed that all three dehydrodipeptides can form self-standing hydrogels with very low critical gelation concentrations (0.050.20 wt%) using a pH trigger. Hydrogels of all three dehydrodipeptides were characterised by scanning tunnelling emission microscopy (STEM), rheology, fluorescence spectroscopy, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Molecular modelling was performed to probe the structural patterns and interactions. The cytotoxicity of the new compounds was tested using human keratinocytes (HaCaT cell line). In general, the results suggest that all three compounds are non-cytotoxic, although one of the peptides shows a small impact on cell viability. In sustained release assays, the effect of the charge of the model drug compounds on the rate of cargo release from the hydrogel network was evaluated. The hydrogels provide a sustained release of methyl orange (anionic) and ciprofloxacin (neutral), while methylene blue (cationic) was retained by the network. This work was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Funding of CQUM (UID/QUI/00686/2019), IPC (UIDP/CTM/05256/2020 and UIDB/05256/2020) and REQUIMTE/LAQV (UIDB/50006/2020). Spread of vaccinia virus to cattle herds, Argentina, 2011

To the Editor: Since 1999, several zoonotic outbreaks of vaccinia virus (VACV) infection have been reported in cattle and humans in rural areas of Brazil. The infections have caused exanthematous lesions on cows and persons who milk them, and thus are detrimental to the milk industry and public health services (1,2). In Brazil during the last decade, VACV outbreaks have been detected from the north to the extreme south of the country (1–4). Because Brazil shares extensive boundaries with other South American countries, humans and cattle on dairy and beef-producing farms in those countries may be at risk of exposure to VACV. To determine if VACV has spread from Brazil to Argentina, we investigated the presence of VACV in serum samples from cattle in Argentina.Facultad de Ciencias VeterinariasComisión de Investigaciones Científicas de la provincia de Buenos Aire

Magnetogels based on iron oxide nanoparticles and peptide hydrogels containing Naproxen and/or RGD

In this work, iron oxide nanoparticles, with diameters around 12 nm, were synthesized by coprecipitation method in aqueous solution. These nanoparticles exhibit a superparamagnetic behavior, with a coercive field of 9.7 Oe and a blocking temperature of 118 K. The nanoparticles were successfully incorporated in peptide-based hydrogels containing naproxen (Npx) and/or RGD. The ability of these magnetogels to act as drug nanocarriers is being investigated, aiming at developing multifunctional therapeutic nanosystems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
