The Italian Stabilization of 1947: Domestic and International Factors

    Get PDF
The paper examines the 1947 monetary stabilization in Italy, tracing the domestic and international political dynamics that allowed ideas and theoretical concepts developed within the Bank of Italy to be applied in a successful action to subdue spiraling inflation. The combination of events and circumstances necessary for the good outcome in a critical juncture of Italian economic history was the fruit of the efforts made by Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi in both the domestic and international political arenas and of the collaboration he received from Luigi Einaudi and Donato Menichella. The Government’s economic action in this crucial episode constitutes perhaps the first outstanding example of cooperation between politicians and experts in the annals of the Italian Republic.Economic history; Stabilization; Italy; United States; De Gasperi; Menichella; 1947

The assignment game: core bounds for mixe-pair coalitions

In the assignment game framework, we try to identify those assignment matrices in which no entry can be increased without changing the core of the game. These games will be called buyerseller exact games and satisfy the condition that each mixedpair coalition attains the corresponding matrix entry in the core of the game. For a given assignment game, a unique buyerseller exact assignment game with the same core is proved to exist. In order to identify this matrix and to provide a characterization of those assignment games which are buyerseller exact in terms of the assignment matrix, attainable upper and lower core bounds for the mixedpair coalitions are found. As a consequence, an open question posed in Quint (1991) regarding a canonical representation of a 45olattice by means of the core of an assignment game can now be answered.core, exact games, assignment game

On the dimension of the core of the assignment game

The set of optimal matchings in the assignment matrix allows to define a reflexive and symmetric binary relation on each side of the market, the equal-partner binary relation. The number of equivalence classes of the transitive closure of the equal-partner binary relation determines the dimension of the core of the assignment game. This result provides an easy procedure to determine the dimension of the core directly from the entries of the assignment matrix and shows that the dimension of the core is not as much determined by the number of optimal matchings as by their relative position in the assignment matrix.core, assignment game, core dimension

The extreme core allocations of the assignment game

Although assignment games are hardly ever convex, in this paper a characterization of their set or extreme points of the core is provided, which is also valid for the class of convex games. For each ordering in the player set, a payoff vector is defined where each player receives his marginal contribution to a certain reduced game played by his predecessors. We prove that the whole set of reduced marginal worth vectors, which for convex games coincide with the usual marginal worth vectors, is the set of extreme points of the core of the assignment game.convex games, assignment game, core

Global Imbalances in a World of Inflexible Real Exchange Rates and Capital Controls

This paper addresses the issue of international payments in a stock-flow framework, by capturing the interaction between the current account balance and international assets portfolios of domestic and foreign investors. It is argued that the stability of such interaction may be affected by shifts in the preferences of investors, by the relative rate of return of different assets, and—more in general—by institutional settings. The model is then used for policy analysis purposes to derive the conditions for the existence of dynamic equilibria, and if they can be attained, under the assumption of market-distorting policy choices.global economic imbalances; international payments; exchange rates; capital controls; current account balance; international assets portfolios

The Doctoral Thesis constitute a very relevant document types to assess knowledge. The objective of this research is to investigate doctoral scientific production in History of Journalism in the period 2002-2012. The sample is supported by 93 PhD Thesis by frequency variables, year of defense, Department and University. The results indicate the primacy of Catalonia as the most fruitful field of research in this area; the predominance of the Department of Communication, and the prevalence of 2009 as the most productive doctoral.
