    A video-based text and equation editor for LaTeX

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.In this paper we present a video based text and equation editor for LaTeX. The system recognizes what is written onto paper and generates the LaTeX code. Text and equations are written on a regular paper using a board marker, and a USB camera attached to a computer is used to capture and record the pen-tip positions in each consecutive image frame. Characters and symbols are represented as separate finite state machines (FSMs). They are written in an isolated manner and they are recognized on-line using the FSMs. In the last step, LaTeX code corresponding to recognized characters and symbols is generated.     A single centre experience with sequential and concomitant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced stage IV tonsillar cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chemo-radiotherapy offers an alternative to primary surgery and adjuvant therapy for the management of locally advanced stage IV squamous cell carcinomas of the tonsil.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A retrospective analysis was performed of the outcomes of 41 patients with locoregionally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil treated non-surgically at the Yorkshire Cancer Centre between January 2004 and December 2005. Due to long radiotherapy waiting times, patients received induction chemotherapy with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil followed by either cisplatin concurrent chemoradiotherapy or radiotherapy alone.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Median age was 55 years (range 34-76 years) and 28 (68%) patients were male. 35/41 patients (85%) received 2 or more cycles of induction chemotherapy. Following induction chemotherapy, 32/41 patients (78%) had a clinical response. Concomitant chemotherapy was given to 30/41 (73%). All patients received the planned radiotherapy dose with no delays. There were no treatment related deaths. Six (15%) patients had gastrostomy tubes placed before treatment, and 22 (54%) required nasogastric tube placement during or after treatment for nutritional support. 17 patients required unplanned admissions during treatment for supportive care. At 4 months post treatment assessment 35 out of 41 (85%) patients achieved complete clinical and radiographic response. Median follow-up is 38 months (8-61 months). Local and regional control rate in complete responders at 3 years was 91%. Distant metastases have been found in 4 (9.8%) patients. Three year progression-free survival rate in all patients is 75%. The 3-year cause specific survival and overall survival are 75% and 66% respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Cisplatin-based induction and concurrent chemoradiotherapy provides excellent tumour control with acceptable toxicity for patients with locally advanced tonsillar cancer.</p

    Analysis of 22,655 presentations with back pain to Perth emergency departments over five years

    BACKGROUND: Back pain is a significant cause of disability in the community, but the impact on Emergency Departments (EDs) has not been formally studied. Patients with back pain often require significant time and resources in the ED. AIMS: To examine the characteristics of patients presenting with back pain to the ED, including final diagnosis, demographics of those attending and temporal distribution of presentations. METHODS: Emergency presentations in the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia, for 2000-2004 were searched using a linked database covering all the major hospitals (Emergency Care Hospitalisation and Outcome Study database). All presentations with the triage code for back pain were extracted and analysed. RESULTS: A total of 22,655 presentations with back pain were identified, representing 1.9% of total presentations. Simple muscular or non-specific back pain accounted for only 43.8% of presentations, with other causes such as renal colic and pyelonephritis accounting for the majority. The young (75 years old) were more likely to have non-muscular causes for their back pain. Muscular back pain presentations occurred mostly between 0800 and 1600, with high proportions presenting on the weekends. Patients with simple muscular back pain spent a mean of 4.4 h in the ED, representing a significant outlay of resources. CONCLUSION: Back pain has a significant impact on EDs, and staff should be alert for another pathology presenting as back pain. There is a need for multidisciplinary back pain teams to be available 7 days a week, but only during the day

    Systematic evaluation of chromosome conformation capture assays [preprint]

    Chromosome conformation capture (3C)-based assays are used to map chromatin interactions genome-wide. Quantitative analyses of chromatin interaction maps can lead to insights into the spatial organization of chromosomes and the mechanisms by which they fold. A number of protocols such as in situ Hi-C and Micro-C are now widely used and these differ in key experimental parameters including cross-linking chemistry and chromatin fragmentation strategy. To understand how the choice of experimental protocol determines the ability to detect and quantify aspects of chromosome folding we have performed a systematic evaluation of experimental parameters of 3C-based protocols. We find that different protocols capture different 3D genome features with different efficiencies. First, the use of cross-linkers such as DSG in addition to formaldehyde improves signal-to-noise allowing detection of thousands of additional loops and strengthens the compartment signal. Second, fragmenting chromatin to the level of nucleosomes using MNase allows detection of more loops. On the other hand, protocols that generate larger multi-kb fragments produce stronger compartmentalization signals. We confirmed our results for multiple cell types and cell cycle stages. We find that cell type-specific quantitative differences in chromosome folding are not detected or underestimated by some protocols. Based on these insights we developed Hi-C 3.0, a single protocol that can be used to both efficiently detect chromatin loops and to quantify compartmentalization. Finally, this study produced ultra-deeply sequenced reference interaction maps using conventional Hi-C, Micro-C and Hi-C 3.0 for commonly used cell lines in the 4D Nucleome Project

    Help-seeking behaviors for female sexual dysfunction: a cross sectional study from Iran

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Female sexual dysfunctions (FSD) are prevalent multifactor problems that in general remain misdiagnosed in primary health care. This population-based study investigated help-seeking behaviors among women with FSD in Iran.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a cross sectional study carried out in Kohgilouyeh-Boyer-Ahmad province in Iran. Using quota sampling all sexually active women aged 15 and over registered in primary health care delivery centers were studied. Experience of sexual problems was assessed using an ad-hoc questionnaire (Female sexual dysfunction: help-seeking behaviors survey) containing 14 items. Trained female nurses interviewed all participants after a verbal informed consent. Data were analyzed in a descriptive manner.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In all 1540 women were studied. Of these, 786 (51%) cases had experienced at least one of the FSD problems. Results showed that 35.8% of women with FSD had sought no professional help and the most reasons for not seeking help were identified as: 'time constraints' and believing that it 'did not occur to me' (39.1 and 28.5% respectively). Sixty one percent of women who sought help for FSD reported that 'doctor gave me a definite diagnosis' and 'a definite treatment plan was given' in 57% of cases.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The study findings indicated that FSD problems were prevalent and many women did not seek help for their problem. Finding 'time constraints' and believing that the problem 'did not occur to me' as the most cited reasons for not seeking help might facilitate to understand potential barriers that exist in recognition and treatment of the female sexual dysfunctions. Since FSD might have a negative impact on interpersonal relationships and women's quality of life, it seems that there is need to address the problem both at local and national primary health care services.</p

    Second-look PET-CT following an initial incomplete PET-CT response to (chemo)radiotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

    OBJECTIVES: The limited positive predictive value of an incomplete response on PET-CT following (chemo)radiotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) means that the optimal management strategy remains uncertain. The aim of the study is to assess the utility of a 'second-look' interval PET-CT. METHODS: Patients with HNSCC who were treated with (chemo)radiotherapy between 2008 and 2017 and underwent (i) baseline and (ii) response assessment PET-CT and (iii) second-look PET-CT following incomplete (positive or equivocal scan) response were included. Endpoints were conversion rate to complete response (CR) and test characteristics of the second-look PET-CT. RESULTS: Five hundred sixty-two patients with HNSCC underwent response assessment PET-CT at a median of 17 weeks post-radiotherapy. Following an incomplete response on PET-CT, 40 patients underwent a second-look PET-CT at a median of 13 weeks (range 6-25) from the first response PET-CT. Thirty-four out of 40 (85%) patients had oropharyngeal carcinoma. Twenty-four out of 40 (60%) second-look PET-CT scans converted to a complete locoregional response. The primary tumour conversion rate was 15/27 (56%) and the lymph node conversion rate was 14/19 (74%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value (NPV) of the second-look PET-CT were 75%, 75%, 25% and 96% for the primary tumour and 100%, 92%, 40% and 100% for lymph nodes. There were no cases of progression following conversion to CR in the primary site or lymph nodes. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients who undergo a second-look PET-CT convert to a CR. The NPV of a second-look PET-CT is high, suggesting the potential to avoid surgical intervention. KEY POINTS: • PET-CT is a useful tool for response assessment following (chemo)radiotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. • An incomplete response on PET-CT has a limited positive predictive value and optimal management is uncertain. • These data show that with a 'second-look' interval PET-CT, the majority of patients convert to a complete metabolic response. When there is doubt about clinical and radiological response, a 'second-look' PET-CT can be used to spare patients unnecessary surgical intervention

    Microfluidic-based virus detection methods for respiratory diseases

    With the recent SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, the importance of rapid and direct detection of respiratory disease viruses has been well recognized. The detection of these viruses with novel technologies is vital in timely prevention and treatment strategies for epidemics and pandemics. Respiratory viruses can be detected from saliva, swab samples, nasal fluid, and blood, and collected samples can be analyzed by various techniques. Conventional methods for virus detection are based on techniques relying on cell culture, antigen-antibody interactions, and nucleic acids. However, these methods require trained personnel as well as expensive equipment. Microfluidic technologies, on the other hand, are one of the most accurate and specific methods to directly detect respiratory tract viruses. During viral infections, the production of detectable amounts of relevant antibodies takes a few days to weeks, hampering the aim of prevention. Alternatively, nucleic acid–based methods can directly detect the virus-specific RNA or DNA region, even before the immune response. There are numerous methods to detect respiratory viruses, but direct detection techniques have higher specificity and sensitivity than other techniques. This review aims to summarize the methods and technologies developed for microfluidic-based direct detection of viruses that cause respiratory infection using different detection techniques. Microfluidics enables the use of minimal sample volumes and thereby leading to a time, cost, and labor effective operation. Microfluidic-based detection technologies provide affordable, portable, rapid, and sensitive analysis of intact virus or virus genetic material, which is very important in pandemic and epidemic events to control outbreaks with an effective diagnosis.Qatar National Research Fun
