Metrology Camera System of Prime Focus Spectrograph for Subaru Telescope
The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is a new optical/near-infrared multi-fiber
spectrograph designed for the prime focus of the 8.2m Subaru telescope. The
metrology camera system of PFS serves as the optical encoder of the COBRA fiber
motors for the configuring of fibers. The 380mm diameter aperture metrology
camera will locate at the Cassegrain focus of Subaru telescope to cover the
whole focal plane with one 50M pixel Canon CMOS sensor. The metrology camera is
designed to provide the fiber position information within 5{\mu}m error over
the 45cm focal plane. The positions of all fibers can be obtained within 1s
after the exposure is finished. This enables the overall fiber configuration to

Spectroscopy of the spatially-extended Lya emission around a QSO at z=6.4
We have taken a deep, moderate-resolution Keck/Deimos spectra of QSO,
CFHQS2329, at z=6.4. At the wavelength of Lya, the spectrum shows a
spatially-extended component, which is significantly more extended than a
stellar spectrum, and also a continuum part of the spectrum. The restframe line
width of the extended component is 21+-7 A, and thus smaller than that of QSO
(52+-4 A), where they should be identical if the light is incomplete
subtraction of the QSO component. Therefore, these comparisons argue for the
detection of a spatially extended Lya nebulae around this QSO. This is the
first z>6 QSO that an extended Lya halo has been observed around. Careful
subtraction of the central QSO spectrum reveals a lower limit to the Lya
luminosity of (1.7+-0.1)x 10^43 erg s^-1. This emission may be from the
theoretically predicted infalling gas in the process of forming a primordial
galaxy that is ionized by a central QSO. On the other hand, if it is
photoionized by the host galaxy, an estimated star-formation rate of >3.0 Msun
yr^-1 is required.
If we assume the gas is virialized, we obtain dynamical mass estimate of
Mdyn=1.2x10^12 Msun. The derived MBH/Mhost is 2.1x10^-4, which is two orders
smaller than those from more massive z~6 QSOs, and places this galaxy in
accordance with the local M-sigma relation, in contrast to a previous claim on
the evolution of M-sigma relation at z~6. We do not claim evolution or
non-evolution of the M-sigma relation based on a single object, but our result
highlights the importance of investigating fainter QSOs at z~6.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. A minor

Coronin1C Is a GDP-Specific Rab44 Effector That Controls Osteoclast Formation by Regulating Cell Motility in Macrophages
Osteoclasts are multinucleated bone-resorbing cells that are formed by the fusion of macrophages. Recently, we identified Rab44, a large Rab GTPase, as an upregulated gene during osteoclast differentiation that negatively regulates osteoclast differentiation. However, the molecular mechanisms by which Rab44 negatively regulates osteoclast differentiation remain unknown. Here, we found that the GDP form of Rab44 interacted with the actin-binding protein, Coronin1C, in murine macrophages. Immunoprecipitation experiments revealed that the interaction of Rab44 and Coronin1C occurred in wild-type and a dominant-negative (DN) mutant of Rab44, but not in a constitutively active (CA) mutant of Rab44. Consistent with these findings, the expression of the CA mutant inhibited osteoclast differentiation, whereas that of the DN mutant enhanced this differentiation. Using a phase-contrast microscope, Coronin1C-knockdown osteoclasts apparently impaired multinuclear formation. Moreover, Coronin1C knockdown impaired the migration and chemotaxis of RAW-D macrophages. An in vivo experimental system demonstrated that Coronin1C knockdown suppresses osteoclastogenesis. Therefore, the decreased cell formation and fusion of Coronin1C-depleted osteoclasts might be due to the decreased migration of Coronin1C-knockdown macrophages. These results indicate that Coronin1C is a GDP-specific Rab44 effector that controls osteoclast formation by regulating cell motility in macrophages
Low- and Medium-Dispersion Spectropolarimetry of Nova V475 Sct (Nova Scuti 2003): Discovery of an Asymmetric High-Velocity Wind in a Moderately Fast Nova
We present low-resolution () and medium-resolution ()
spectropolarimetry of Nova V475 Sct with the HBS instrument, mounted on the
0.91-m telescope at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, and with FOCAS,
mounted on the 8.2-m Subaru telescope. We estimated the interstellar
polarization toward the nova from the steady continuum polarization components
and H line emission components. After subtracting the interstellar
polarization component from the observations, we found that the H
emission seen on 2003 October 7 was clearly polarized. In the polarized flux
spectrum, the H emission had a distinct red wing extending to km s and a shoulder around km s, showing a
constant position angle of linear polarization \theta_{\rm *}\simeq
155\arcdeg\pm 15\arcdeg. This suggests that the nova had an asymmetric outflow
with a velocity of km s or more, which is six
times higher than the expansion velocity of the ionized shell at the same
epoch. Such a high-velocity component has not previously been reported for a
nova in the `moderately fast' speed class. Our observations suggest the
occurrence of violent mass-loss activity in the nova binary system even during
the common-envelope phase. The position angle of the polarization in the
H wing is in good agreement with that of the continuum polarization
found on 2003 September 26 (--0.6 %), which disappeared
within the following 2 d. The uniformity of the PA between the continuum
polarization and the wing polarization on October 7 suggests that the axis of
the circumstellar asymmetry remained nearly constant during the period of our

Update on the GOSAT TANSO–FTS SWIR Level 2 retrieval algorithm
The National Institute for Environmental Studies has provided the column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of carbon dioxide and methane (XCO and XCH) products (L2 products) obtained from the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) for more than a decade. Recently, we updated the retrieval algorithm used to produce the new L2 product, V03.00. The main changes from the previous version (V02) of the retrieval algorithm are the treatment of cirrus clouds, the degradation model of the Thermal And Near-infrared Spectrometer for carbon Observation–Fourier Transform Spectrometer (TANSO–FTS), solar irradiance spectra, and gas absorption coefficient tables. The retrieval results from the updated algorithm showed improvements in fitting accuracies in the O A, weak CO, and CH bands of TANSO–FTS, although the residuals increase in the strong CO band over the ocean. The direct comparison of the new product obtained from the updated (V03) algorithm with the previous version V02.90/91 and the validations using the Total Carbon Column Observing Network revealed that the V03 algorithm increases the amount of data without diminishing the data qualities of XCO and XCH over land. However, the negative bias of XCO is larger than that of the previous version over the ocean, and bias correction is still necessary. Additionally, the V03 algorithm resolves the underestimation of the XCO growth rate compared with the in situ measurements over the ocean recently found using V02.90/91 and V02.95/96
Adamantyl-functionalized polymer monolith for capillary electrochromatography.
An adamantyl (ADM)-functionalized monolithic stationary phase was newly synthesized by a single-step copolymerization of 1-adamantyl-(alpha-trifluoromethyl) acrylate, ethylene dimethacrylate, and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid in order to prevent the peak tailing of basic solutes in capillary electrochromatography and was compared with butyl methacrylate (BMA)-based one. The ADM structure shields the negatively charged groups on the surface of monolith from basic solutes, resulting in better peak shapes than BMA-based monolithic stationary phase. As the monomers ratio decreased, the monolithic column had lower retention and higher column efficiency which was likely due to lower phase ratio and smaller globule size of monolith, respectively. The ADM-functionalized monolithic columns exhibited a good repeatability and reproducibility of column preparation with relative standard deviation values below 9% in the studied chromatographic parameters
Prime Focus Spectrograph - Subaru's future -
The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) of the Subaru Measurement of Images and
Redshifts (SuMIRe) project has been endorsed by Japanese community as one of
the main future instruments of the Subaru 8.2-meter telescope at Mauna Kea,
Hawaii. This optical/near-infrared multi-fiber spectrograph targets cosmology
with galaxy surveys, Galactic archaeology, and studies of galaxy/AGN evolution.
Taking advantage of Subaru's wide field of view, which is further extended with
the recently completed Wide Field Corrector, PFS will enable us to carry out
multi-fiber spectroscopy of 2400 targets within 1.3 degree diameter. A
microlens is attached at each fiber entrance for F-ratio transformation into a
larger one so that difficulties of spectrograph design are eased. Fibers are
accurately placed onto target positions by positioners, each of which consists
of two stages of piezo-electric rotary motors, through iterations by using
back-illuminated fiber position measurements with a wide-field metrology
camera. Fibers then carry light to a set of four identical fast-Schmidt
spectrographs with three color arms each: the wavelength ranges from 0.38
{\mu}m to 1.3 {\mu}m will be simultaneously observed with an average resolving
power of 3000. Before and during the era of extremely large telescopes, PFS
will provide the unique capability of obtaining spectra of 2400
cosmological/astrophysical targets simultaneously with an 8-10 meter class
telescope. The PFS collaboration, led by IPMU, consists of USP/LNA in Brazil,
Caltech/JPL, Princeton, & JHU in USA, LAM in France, ASIAA in Taiwan, and
