    Phoneme-aware Encoding for Prefix-tree-based Contextual ASR

    In speech recognition applications, it is important to recognize context-specific rare words, such as proper nouns. Tree-constrained Pointer Generator (TCPGen) has shown promise for this purpose, which efficiently biases such words with a prefix tree. While the original TCPGen relies on grapheme-based encoding, we propose extending it with phoneme-aware encoding to better recognize words of unusual pronunciations. As TCPGen handles biasing words as subword units, we propose obtaining subword-level phoneme-aware encoding by using alignment between phonemes and subwords. Furthermore, we propose injecting phoneme-level predictions from CTC into queries of TCPGen so that the model better interprets the phoneme-aware encodings. We conducted ASR experiments with TCPGen for RNN transducer. We observed that proposed phoneme-aware encoding outperformed ordinary grapheme-based encoding on both the English LibriSpeech and Japanese CSJ datasets, demonstrating the robustness of our approach across linguistically diverse languages.Comment: Accepted to ICASSP202

    High revivability of vitrified-warmed bovine mature oocytes after recovery culture with alpha-tocopherol

    online publication: 27 January 2015The objective of this study was to investigate whether developmental competence of vitrified–warmed bovine oocytes can be improved by antioxidant treatment during recovery culture. In experiment 1, one of the two antioxidants (either l-ascorbic acid or α-tocopherol) was added as a supplement to the recovery culture medium to which postwarming oocytes were exposed for 2 h before IVF. The exposure to α-tocopherol had a positive effect on rescuing the oocytes as assessed by the blastocyst yield 8 days after the IVF (35.1–36.3% vs 19.2–25.8% in untreated postwarming oocytes). Quality of expanding blastocysts harvested on Day 8 was comparable between α-tocopherol-treated vitrification group and fresh control group in terms of total cell number and chromosomal ploidy. In experiment 2, level of reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial activity, and distribution of cortical granules in α-tocopherol-treated postwarming oocytes were assessed. No obvious differences from the control data were found in these parameters. However, the treatment with α-tocopherol increased the percentage of zygotes exhibiting normal single aster formation (90.3% vs 48.0% in untreated postwarming oocytes; 10 h post-IVF). It was concluded that α-tocopherol treatment of vitrified–warmed bovine mature oocytes during recovery culture can improve their revivability, as shown by the high blastocyst yield and the higher mean total cell number in the blastocysts.ArticleREPRODUCTION. 149(4):347-355 (2015)journal articl

    Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), formerly known as primary biliary cirrhosis, is an organ-specific autoimmune disease that predominantly affects middle-aged women and is characterized by the chronic progressive destruction of small intrahepatic bile ducts with portal inflammation and, ultimately, fibrosis. The serological hallmark of PBC is the presence of anti-mitochondrial autoantibodies (AMA). Several mechanisms have been proposed for immune-mediated bile duct damage in PBC, including the roles of T cells, B cells, other cell phenotypes, and AMA. A sign of fragility of biliary epithelial cells caused by apoptosis, senescence, and autophagy has also been noted.     Comparative analysis on the physique and batting records of the players in the National Summer High School Baseball Tournaments before and after the adoption of metal bats.

    To clarify the influence of the introduction of metal bats on the physique and batting records of the players in the National Summer High School Baseball Tournaments, a comparative analysis was conducted between height, body weight, body-weight ratio (body weight/height), batting average and home run average of the best four teams' players (n = 493) and those of the other teams' players (n = 4,590) in three periods: the period of the use of wooden bats, that of the use of both wooden and metal bats and that of the use of metal bats. In the period of metal bat use, the mean values of physique of the best four teams' players were significantly larger (P &#60; 0.05) and their average number of home runs was significantly higher than those of the other teams' players (P &#60; 0.01). The only significant differences between the two groups in those indices for each time period were for height in the wood and metal/wood periods. This study demonstrated that the differences between the home run average and physique, including height, body weight and body-weight ratio of the best four teams and the rest of the teams were the greatest after the use of metal bats. These findings suggest that the importance of the home run average increased and was associated with large-size of physique after the use of metal bats in the National Summer High School Baseball Tournaments.</p

    Output Prediction Attacks on Block Ciphers using Deep Learning

    Cryptanalysis of symmetric-key ciphers, e.g., linear/differential cryptanalysis, requires an adversary to know the internal structures of the target ciphers. On the other hand, deep learning-based cryptanalysis has attracted significant attention because the adversary is not assumed to have knowledge about the target ciphers with the exception of the algorithm interfaces. Such cryptanalysis in a blackbox setting is extremely strong; thus, we must design symmetric-key ciphers that are secure against deep learning-based cryptanalysis. However, almost previous attacks do not clarify what features or internal structures affect success probabilities. Although Benamira et al. (Eurocrypt 2021) and Chen et al. (ePrint 2021) analyzed Gohr’s results (CRYPTO 2019), they did not find any deep learning specific characteristic where it affects the success probabilities of deep learning-based attacks but does not affect those of linear/differential cryptanalysis. Therefore, it is difficult to employ the results of such cryptanalysis to design deep learning-resistant symmetric-key ciphers. In this paper, we propose deep learning-based output prediction attacks in a blackbox setting. As preliminary experiments, we first focus on two toy SPN block ciphers (small PRESENT-[4] and small AES-[4]) and one toy Feistel block cipher (small TWINE-[4]). Due to its small internal structures with a block size of 16 bits, we can construct deep learning models by employing the maximum number of plaintext/ciphertext pairs, and we can precisely calculate the rounds in which full diffusion occurs. Next, based on the preliminary experiments, we explore whether the evaluation results obtained by our attacks against three toy block ciphers can be applied to block ciphers with large block sizes, e.g., 32 and 64 bits. As a result, we demonstrate the following results, specifically for the SPN block ciphers: First, our attacks work against a similar number of rounds that the linear/differential attacks can be successful. Next, our attacks realize output predictions (precisely ciphertext prediction and plaintext recovery) that are much stronger than distinguishing attacks. Then, swapping or replacing the internal components of the target block ciphers affects the average success probabilities of the proposed attacks. It is particularly worth noting that this is a deep learning specific characteristic because swapping/replacing does not affect the average success probabilities of the linear/differential attacks. Finally, by analyzing the influence of the differences in the characteristics of three S-boxes (i.e., the original PRESENT S-box and two known weak S-boxes) on deep learning specific characteristics, we clarify that the resistance of the target ciphers to differential/linear attacks can affect the success probability of deep learning-based attacks. We also confirm whether the proposed attacks work on the Feistel block cipher. We expect that our results will be an important stepping stone in the design of deep learning-resistant symmetric-key ciphers

    Pediatric cardiac catheterization requires unconsciousness and immobilization through general anesthesia or sedation. This study aimed to compare the occurrence of severe complications in pediatric diagnostic cardiac catheterization for ventricular septal defect between general anesthesia and sedation performed under similar institutional environments. Using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database, we retrospectively identified pediatric patients (aged <2 years) who underwent diagnostic cardiac catheterization for ventricular septal defect between July 2010 and March 2019. The composite outcome was the occurrence of severe complications, including catecholamine use and intensive care unit admission, within seven days after catheterization. Overlap weighting based on propensity scores was used to adjust for patient- and hospital-level confounding factors. We identified 3159 patients from 87 hospitals, including 930 under general anesthesia and 2229 under sedation. The patient- and hospital-level baseline characteristics differed between the groups. After adjustment, the proportion of patients with severe complications was significantly higher in the general anesthesia group than in the sedation group (2.4% vs. 0.6%; risk difference, 1.8% [95% confidence interval, 0.93–2.6%]). Severe complications occurred more frequently in the general anesthesia group than in the sedation group. Further research on anesthetic methods is necessary to assess the safety and accuracy of pediatric diagnostic cardiac catheterization.博士(医学)・甲第867号・令和5年3月15

    Relation between the instrumental activities of daily living and physical fitness tests in elderly women.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and various physical fitness tests in elderly women living at home. The study focused on the total population of those women aged 65 years and over living in Y Town, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, who visited a nursing home for day services. A total of 128 subjects were divided into two groups: dependent in IADL group (n = 49) and independent in IADL group (n = 79). The magnitude of the relation was evaluated by the odds ratio (OR). The following tests showed a significant decrease in IADL: knee-raising test [age-adjusted OR = 4.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.81-9.87], height (age-adjusted OR = 4.09, 95% CI 1.75-9.56), grip strength (age-adjusted OR = 3.68, 95% CI 1.57-8.60), sit-and-reach test (age-adjusted OR = 2.76, 95% CI 1.20-6.34), and standing on one leg with closed eyes (age-adjusted OR = 2.56, 95% CI 1.09-5.97). Multivariate analysis using Hayashi's quantification method I indicated that knee-raising was the test most highly correlated with decreased IADL. These results suggest that measurement of knee-raising ability, muscle strength of the lower extremities and flexibility of hip joint could be the most useful factors to assess the level of instrumental self-support ability.</p

    EFFECTS OF COFFEE INTAKE ON METABOLIC SYNDROME

    Background: Metabolic syndrome is one of the most important health issues worldwide. Obesity causes insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and various diseases throughout the body. The liver phenotype, which is called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), frequently progresses to hepatocellular carcinoma. We recently established a new animal model, Tsumura-Suzuki obese diabetic (TSOD) mice, which spontaneously exhibit obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and NASH with liver nodules. Methods: We examined the effects of coffee intake on various conditions of the metabolic syndrome using TSOD mice. The daily volume of coffee administered was limited so that it reflected the appropriate quantities consumed in humans. To clarify the effects of the specific components, animals were divided into two coffee-intake groups that included with and without caffeine. Results: Coffee intake did not significantly affect obesity and hyperlipidemia in TSOD mice. In contrast, coffee intake caused various degrees of improvement in the pancreatic beta cell damage and steatohepatitis with liver carcinogenesis. Most of the effects were believed to be caused by a synergistic effect of caffeine with other components such as polyphenols. However, the antifibrotic effects of coffee appeared to be due to the polyphenols rather than the caffeine. Conclusions: A daily habit of drinking coffee could possibly play a role in the prevention of metabolic syndrome
