Expanding the performance area: The Nigerian artistes’ ordeal

    Get PDF
It is no longer news that the live theatre needs to go out of the four-walls of a university building in search of its audience. The history of Nigerian theatre be it from the literary or traditional perspectives is incomplete without a mention and recall to performances on the streets, market places, religious houses and other unconventional places. These arenas no longer experience the performance as in the days of old and their audiences are either completely denied of the pleasure or have looked elsewhere for an alternative. To bring back the lost pleasures to the audience and to revive the old practice comes with a lot of challenges and demands. These challenges and demands though appear as difficult tasks, they are surmountable. Theatre practitioners owe it a duty to the audience, if they are ready to brace-up to the challenges, to showcase relevant, meaningful and understandable performances to them. The improved and advanced technologies should not be confined to the building; rather their adaptability and functionalities should be subjected to test and used at some orthodox performance spaces. Keywords: Expanding, Performance Area, Artistes Ordea

The Role of Taxation in Nigeria's Oil and Gas Sector Reforms - Learning from the Canadian Experience

    Get PDF
Several stakeholders in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry have emphasized the need for petroleum sector reforms in Nigeria. Canada is reputed to have one of the best oil and gas tax regimes in the world. This thesis argues that certain tax measures in Canada’s oil and gas industry have considerable potential for addressing certain industry inefficiencies in Nigeria’s petroleum sector. In developing this argument, this thesis gives an overview of oil and gas taxation in both jurisdictions and examines the possibility of transferring laws between Nigeria and Canada by exploring legal and tax comparative law theories. The thesis also examines the major challenges in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry and identifies viable areas in Canada’s oil and gas tax system which have the potential to address these challenges. Given the peculiarities of oil and gas taxation in each jurisdiction, this thesis suggests that the selected Canadian fiscal and administrative measures may require certain modifications in order to make these measures more suitable for Nigeria’s legal and tax system

People and places : bridging the information gaps in refugee integration

    Get PDF
This article discusses the sources of information used by refugees as they navigate integration systems and processes. The study used interviews to examine how refugees and asylum seekers dealt with their information needs, finding that information gaps were bridged through people and places. People included friends, solicitors, and caseworkers, whereas places included service providers, detention centers, and refugee camps. The information needs matrix was used as an analytical tool to examine the operation of sources on refuge-seekers' integration journeys. Our findings expand understandings of information sources and information grounds. The matrix can be used to enhance host societies' capacity to make appropriate information available and to provide evidence for the implementation of the information needs matrix

Effect of Resource Productivity of Maize-Based Farmers on Poverty Reduction in South West, Nigeria

    Get PDF
The ability of Nigerian agriculture to perform its role in the development of the economy has been on the decline in the last three decades. Therefore, the 2030 Agenda’s historic commitment to rid the world of the twin scourges of poverty and hunger cannot become a reality if nothing is done about improving resource productivity so as to reduce poverty. This article examined the effect of resource productivity of maize-based farmers on poverty reduction in South-West, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 180 respondents and data were collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire. The stochastic frontier production function, poverty index and probit regression model were used to analyze data from the study. Results showed that age, farming experience, cooperative membership, credit, extension visits, farm distance, and land ownership were significant determinants of efficiency of maize-based farmers. The poverty incidence, poverty gap and poverty severity were 42%, 50% and 11.2% respectively. Results further showed that efficiency and other variables were significant determinants of poverty among respondents in the study area. Policies that facilitate increased production of maize, increased level of education, increased cooperative membership, and access to credit are essential to help reducing poverty among maize-based farmers and among the rural poor in general. The performance evaluation of a cassava pelletizer

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the development and performance evaluation of a machine for cottage level production of pellets from cassava mash. Cassava flour was produced by peeling, grating and drying freshly harvested cassava tubers. Experiments were conducted to determine the physical properties, such as moisture content, particle size distribution and bulk density and the chemical composition of the flour. The flour was mixed with water at different blend ratios to form cassava mash of different moisture contents. A cassava pelletizer was then developed incorporating relevant properties of the flour. The pelletizer consists of a barreled screw auger, which compresses cassava mash against a perforated end plate, through which the pellets are extruded. The barrel is encased in a co-axial counter flow heat exchanger to provide cooling for the system. The performance of the pelletizer was evaluated in terms of the density, durability, crushing strength and cyanide content of the pellets, and the throughput of the machine, against the moisture content of the mash (18, 20 and 22 % w.b.), die size (4, 6 and 8 mm) and the auger speed (90, 100 and 120 rpm). Test results showed that the bulk density and the durability of pellets decreased while the moisture content increased significantly (p<0.05) and separately with increasing die size and moisture content of cassava mash. The pellets with the best quality attributes were obtained from cassava mash at 18% moisture content (w.b.) extruded through the 4 mm die at 90 rpm and a maximum throughput of 54 kg/hr. The pellets exhibited a bulk density of 635 kg/m3 , 15% moisture content (w.b.) crushing strength of 34.24 MPa and a high durability (85.7%). The machine, thus, provides a significant leverage in the utilization of cassava as pelletized animal feed

The information needs matrix : a navigational guide for refugee integration

    Get PDF
This paper presents an information needs matrix as a navigation guide for refugees and host societies to support integration. It is an outcome from an information behaviour investigation into refugee integration, conducted through interviews with asylum seekers and refugees. A sense-making methodology was used as a framework to examine the experiences of refugees, focusing on the situations and information gaps encountered during integration. The study identified information needs on housing, financial, legal and social support, mobility, health, education, employment and state benefits. A unique feature of the proposed matrix is the order dependency of the uncovered needs by our investigation. The findings were validated with observation data collected while undertaking a role at the Scottish Refugee Council. The matrix can be used to guide society’s provisions for integration, assess levels of individual integration and inform the design of information support for refugees

The Interaction Effect of Institutions and Trade Liberalization on Economic Growth in Africa

This study sets out to examine the interaction effect of institutions and trade liberalization on economic growth in selected African countries using panel data. There is a general discourse that the growth of a country depends on the level of investment which can be achieved most times via engaging in trading activities with other countries of the world. International trade, on the other hand, is enhanced by the presence of strong institutions. It has been observed that the combination of institutions and trade liberalization affect the economic growth of African countries. Finding out which of the institutions would best aid international trade and boost growth more is the aim of this study. This study used secondary data of forty African countries and employed the Least Square Dummy Variables (LSDV) and the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) econometric techniques for estimation. The major finding of the study revealed that the interaction effect of trade liberalization, political and cultural institutions is stronger than the interaction effect of trade liberalization and economic institutions hence economic growth tends to be better in the former case than the latter in the selected SSA countries. Therefore, the study recommends that attention should be paid to the development of the economic, political, and cultural institutions simultaneously by the governments of the African countrie
