    The IR fluxes of 2 He-variable stars in Orion (σ Ori E = HD 37479 and HD 37017) were reobserved through 4.8 μm on 16 Jan. 1982, at Steward Observatory. The M-band excesses previously reported are not confirmed by these observations

    Orbits and Pulsations of the Classical ζ Aurigae Binaries

    We have derived new orbits for ζ Aur, 32 Cyg, and 31 Cyg with observations from the Tennessee State University (TSU) Automatic Spectroscopic Telescope, and used them to identify nonorbital velocities of the cool supergiant components of these systems. We measure periods in those deviations, identify unexpected long-period changes in the radial velocities, and place upper limits on the rotation of these stars. These radial-velocity variations are not obviously consistent with radial pulsation theory, given what we know about the masses and sizes of the components. Our concurrent photometry detected the nonradial pulsations driven by tides (ellipsoidal variation) in both ζ Aur and 32 Cyg, at a level and phasing roughly consistent with simple theory to first order, although they seem to require moderately large gravity darkening. However, the K component of 32 Cyg must be considerably bigger than expected, or have larger gravity darkening than ζ Aur, to fit its amplitude. However, again there is precious little evidence for the normal radial pulsation of cool stars in our photometry. Hα shows some evidence for chromospheric heating by the B component in both ζ Aur and 32 Cyg, and the three stars show among them a meager ~2-3 outbursts in their winds of the sort seen occasionally in cool supergiants. We point out two fundamental questions in the interpretation of these stars: (1) whether it is appropriate to model the surface brightness as gravity darkening and (2) whether much of the nonorbital velocity structure may actually represent changes in the convective flows in the stars\u27 atmospheres

    Palladium-Mediated¹¹C-Carbonylations Using Aryl Halides and Cyanamide

    A robust and high-yielding radiochemical synthesis of ¹¹C-N-cyanobenzamides using a palladium-mediated aminocarbonylation with ¹¹C-CO, aryl halides and cyanamide is described. The bidentate ligand 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene provided ¹¹C-N-cyanobenzamides from aryl-iodides, bromides, triflates and even chlorides in 28–79% radiochemical yield after semi-preparative HPLC. To further highlight the utility of this method, novel ¹¹C-N-cyanobenzamide analogs of flufenamic acid, meflanamic acid, dazoxiben and tamibarotene were synthesized in 34–71% radiochemical yields

    A shuttle-borne lidar system is described, which will provide basic data about aerosol distributions for developing climatological models. Topics discussed include: (1) present knowledge of the physical characteristics of desert aerosols and the absorption characteristics of atmospheric gas, (2) radiative heating computations, and (3) general circulation models. The characteristics of a shuttle-borne radar are presented along with some laboratory studies which identify schemes that permit the implementation of a high spectral resolution lidar system

    We present a new period study and light-curve solutions for the A-Type W UMa binary GSC 3208-1986. Contrary to a previous claim by R.G. Samec et al. of a rapidly decreasing period, the system's period is increasing moderately on a timescale of 2x 10^6 years. The light curve is variable on the time scale of years, which can be understood by changes in how much it overfills its Roche lobe

    The data acquisition system of the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider will employ an event builder which will combine data from about 500 data sources into full events at an aggregate throughput of 100 GByte/s. Several architectures and switch technologies have been evaluated for the DAQ Technical Design Report by measurements with test benches and by simulation. This paper describes studies of an EVB test-bench based on 64 PCs acting as data sources and data consumers and employing both Gigabit Ethernet and Myrinet technologies as the interconnect. In the case of Ethernet, protocols based on Layer-2 frames and on TCP/IP are evaluated. Results from ongoing studies, including measurements on throughput and scaling are presented. The architecture of the baseline CMS event builder will be outlined. The event builder is organised into two stages with intelligent buffers in between. The first stage contains 64 switches performing a first level of data concentration by building super-fragments from fragments of 8 data sources. The second stage combines the 64 super-fragments into full events. This architecture allows installation of the second stage of the event builder in steps, with the overall throughput scaling linearly with the number of switches in the second stage. Possible implementations of the components of the event builder are discussed and the expected performance of the full event builder is outlined.Comment: Conference CHEP0
