Analytical studies of organochlorine biocides show that their concentration in the plants (roots) is higherthan in the ground and particularly in the medicinal plants used in the therapy and the pharmacyindustry. The most favorite Bulgarian drugs (Carsil, Tribestan and Nivalin) contain plant extracts andthey have to be analyzed in respect to European Community Directives EEC/76/895 and EEC/90/6421998;In view of that the gas chromatography method for quantitative determination of organochlorine biocides(HCH and isomers, DDT and metabolites) was studied. Plant material from different regions of Bulgaria(fructus from Silybum marianum, L) and Carsil dragee produced by Sopharma Ltd. were analyzed inrespect to European Pharmacopoeia regulations. The method was validated and analytical parametersspecificity, linearity, precision, repeatability and range were studied.
ABSTRACTAmino acids play an important role in human nutrition and health maintenance. Nowadays amino acids are used as animal feed additives, flavor enhancers, ingredients in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products and as specialty nutrients in the medical field, and the production capacity requirements are constantly increasing. This paper reviews the manufacturing methods for the production of some amino acids used in the pharmaceutical industry and outlines the main achievements of biotechnology in this field. It also summarizes the weaknesses and strengths of the biotechnological methods used for the industrial production of the studied amino acids. Literature search was done through MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus Database, Web of Knowledge search as well as an Internet-based search with predefined keywords. The present mini review is based on a total of 66 publications. Out of 15 amino acids included in our study, 14 are routinely manufactured applying biotechnology methods mostly from specially developed mutan..
Unilateral Eyelid Involvement as Single Presentation of Discoid Lupus Erythematosus: A Clinical Conundrum
We report a case of a 30-year-old woman with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) involving only a single lower eyelid. The diagnostic delay is explained by the unspecific clinical and histopathology picture and lack of specific changes in the first biopsy specimen taken. The diagnosis was based on later histological and immunological studies. Palpebral involvement has rarely been reported as the first and sole manifestation of the disease.</p
HPLC detection of dehydroepiandrosterone in food additives by using normal phase HPLC
A normal-phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for the determination of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in food supplements. We have used an HPLC 200 (Perkin Elmer, USA) with a spectrophotometric detector LC-785A (Bioanalytical systems, USA) and a thermostat (Perkin Elmer, Waltham, MA, USA). We have chosen isocratic HPLC elution, column: LiChrospher (100 DIOL 250 x 4 mm х 5 μm), mobile phase: acetonitrile: water = 98: 2 v/v, flow rate: 1 ml/min. and detection at λ = 202 nm. We have found that this method allows fast and selective qualitative and quantitative determination of DHEA in pharmaceutical products
Exploring the relationship between frequent cannabis use, belief updating under uncertainty and psychotic-like symptoms
Background: Cannabis users present an important group for investigating putative mechanisms underlying psychosis, as cannabis-use is associated with an increased risk of psychosis. Recent work suggests that alterations in belief-updating under uncertainty underlie psychosis. We therefore compared belief updating under uncertainty between cannabis and non-cannabis users. Methods: 49 regular cannabis users and 52 controls completed the Space Game, via an online platform used for behavioral testing. In the task, participants were asked to predict the location of the stimulus based on previous information, under different uncertainty conditions. Mixed effects models were used to identify significant predictors of mean score, confidence, performance error and learning rate. Results: Both groups showed decreased confidence in high noise conditions, and increased belief updating in more volatile conditions, suggesting that they could infer the degree and sources of uncertainty. There were no significant effects of group on any of the performance indices. However, within the cannabis group, frequent users showed worse performance than less frequent users. Conclusion: Belief updating under uncertainty is not affected by cannabis use status but could be impaired in those who use cannabis more frequently. This finding could show a similarity between frequent cannabis use and psychosis risk, as predictors for abnormal belief-updating
Cytotoxic activity of Galantamine hydrobromide against HeLa cell line
Cytotoxic activity of Galantamine HBr against human cervical adenocarcinoma cell line HeLa in different concentrations (1.875 μМ ÷ 30 μМ) was evaluated. Inhibition of HeLa cell growth after treatment with Galantamine HBr and index of cell viability were determined. From the experimental results was proven that the drug exerts cytotoxic activity towards HeLa cell line, with antiproliferative activity presented as the value of IC50 = 30 μM ± 0.22
Quality control of organochlorine biocide residues in fructus from Silybum marianum L
de la Comunidad Europea EEC/76/895 y EEC/90/642 1998;
biocidas organoclorados (HCH e isómeros, DDT y metabolitos).

БОЛЕСТТА AMOR HEREOS В СРЕДНОВЕКОВНИЯ РОМАН HISTORIA DE JACOBO XALABÍN
The History of Jacobo Xalabín (La historia de Jacobo Xalabín) is a medieval anonymous novel written in the Catalan language. According to the latest research, it dates between 1492 and 1536. The narrator takes us to the court of Sultan Murad I in 1387. Sultan Yakub's first-born son rejects the love of his stepmother Isa Celebina, as a result of which she falls ill. Advised by the only doctor who discovered the cause of her illness – the Jew Kir Moshe, in order to cure her, they planned the death of Yakub Celebi. Although the inclusion of Isa Chelebina's illness in the narrative is only one of its elements, accurate conclusions can be drawn from the narrative about the level of modern medical practice at that time in the examination of patients, the treatment of identified diseases and the imposition of certain stereotypes regarding the qualifications of doctors in different countries. Added to them is the clearly expressed personal attitude of the author towards certain ethnic and religious types – the Christian wife of the ruler Isa Celebina, and the doctor from Constantinople, the Jew Kir Moshe
