    Magneto-transport in periodic and quasiperiodic arrays of mesoscopic rings

    We study theoretically the transmission properties of serially connected mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux. Within a tight-binding formalism we derive exact analytical results for the transmission through periodic and quasiperiodic Fibonacci arrays of rings of two different sizes. The role played by the number of scatterers in each arm of the ring is analyzed in some detail. The behavior of the transmission coefficient at a particular value of the energy of the incident electron is studied as a function of the magnetic flux (and vice versa) for both the periodic and quasiperiodic arrays of rings having different number of atoms in the arms. We find interesting resonance properties at specific values of the flux, as well as a power-law decay in the transmission coefficient as the number of rings increases, when the magnetic field is switched off. For the quasiperiodic Fibonacci sequence we discuss various features of the transmission characteristics as functions of energy and flux, including one special case where, at a special value of the energy and in the absence of any magnetic field, the transmittivity changes periodically as a function of the system size.Comment: 9 pages with 7 .eps figures included, submitted to PR

    The use of plants to treat diseases or even to cure them is a high diffused popular tradition, and several studies discuss the therapeutic and pharmacological properties of garlic in the reduction of hyperlipidaemias. The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of the aqueous extract of garlic (Allium sativum) to treat the serum cholesterol of rabbits with experimental hypercholesterolemia. The animals were divided into G1 (control group) and G2 (group treated with garlic). The experiment was developed according to 3 phases: during the 1st phase, all animals were provided with a regular diet to evaluate the basal cholesterol; during the 2nd phase, all animals received a supplemented diet until the end of the experiment, in order to develop hypercholesterolemia and, in the 3rd phase, the animals on G2 received the garlic treatment. The cholesterol registered on the 1st phase was 39.94 ± 9.57 mg dL-1. On the 2nd phase, there was an increase on the serum cholesterol level in both groups - higher than 100 mg dL-1. Concerning the treatment, the garlic did not reduce the serum cholesterol in rabbits.A utilização de plantas no tratamento de doenças ou como meio curativo é uma tradição popular e altamente difundida, sendo que muitos trabalhos abordam as propriedades terapêuticas e farmacológicas do alho na redução das hiperlipidemias. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a influência do extrato aquoso (E.A.) do alho (Allium sativum L.) no tratamento do colesterol plasmático em coelhos com hipercolesterolemia experimental. Os animais foram divididos em G1 (grupo controle) e G2 (grupo tratado com alho). O experimento foi desenvolvido em três fases: na 1ª fase os animais receberam dieta comercial de coelhos para avaliar o nível basal de colesterol nos animais; na 2ªfase, todos os animais passaram a receber dieta suplementada com gema de ovo, até o final do experimento, para desenvolver hipercolesterolemia, e; na 3ª fase os animais do grupo G2 receberam o tratamento com E. A. de alho. O colesterol na 1ª fase foi de 39,94 ± 9,57 mg dL-1. Na 2ª fase houve elevação significativa (p<0,05) no nível de colesterol plasmático nos dois grupos -acima de 100 mg dL-1.     First international descriptive and interventional survey for cholesterol and non-cholesterol sterol determination by gas- and liquid- chromatography–Urgent need for harmonisation of analytical methods

    Serum concentrations of lathosterol, the plant sterols campesterol and sitosterol and the cholesterol metabolite 5α-cholestanol are widely used as surrogate markers of cholesterol synthesis and absorption, respectively. Increasing numbers of laboratories utilize a broad spectrum of well-established and recently developed methods for the determination of cholesterol and non-cholesterol sterols (NCS). In order to evaluate the quality of these measurements and to identify possible sources of analytical errors our group initiated the first international survey for cholesterol and NCS. The cholesterol and NCS survey was structured as a two-part survey which took place in the years 2013 and 2014. The first survey part was designed as descriptive, providing information about the variation of reported results from different laboratories. A set of two lyophilized pooled sera (A and B) was sent to twenty laboratories specialized in chromatographic lipid analysis. The different sterols were quantified either by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection, gas chromatography- or liquid chromatography-mass selective detection. The participants were requested to determine cholesterol and NCS concentrations in the provided samples as part of their normal laboratory routine. The second part was designed as interventional survey. Twenty-two laboratories agreed to participate and received again two different lyophilized pooled sera (C and D). In contrast to the first international survey, each participant received standard stock solutions with defined concentrations of cholesterol and NCS. The participants were requested to use diluted calibration solutions from the provided standard stock solutions for quantification of cholesterol and NCS. In both surveys, each laboratory used its own internal standard (5α-cholestane, epicoprostanol or deuterium labelled sterols). Main outcome of the survey was, that unacceptably high interlaboratory variations for cholesterol and NCS concentrations are reported, even when the individual laboratories used the same calibration material. We discuss different sources of errors and recommend all laboratories analysing cholesterol and NCS to participate in regular quality control programs

    Appetite and energy balance signals from adipocytes

    Interest in the biology of white adipose tissue has risen markedly with the recent surge in obesity and its associated disorders. The tissue is no longer viewed simply as a vehicle for lipid storage; instead, it is recognized as a major endocrine and secretory organ. White adipocytes release a multiplicity of protein hormones, signals and factors, termed adipokines, with an extensive range of physiological actions. Foremost among these various adipokines is the cytokine-like hormone, leptin, which is synthesized predominantly in white fat. Leptin plays a critical role in the control of appetite and energy balance, with mutations in the genes encoding the hormone or its receptor leading to profound obesity in both rodents and man. Leptin regulates appetite primarily through an interaction with hypothalamic neuroendocrine pathways, inhibiting orexigenic peptides such as neuropeptide Y and orexin A, and stimulating anorexigenic peptides such as proopiomelanocortin. White fat also secretes several putative appetite-related adipokines, which include interleukin-6 and adiponectin, but whether these are indeed significant signals in the regulation of food intake has not been established. Through leptin and the other adipokines it is evident that adipose tissue communicates extensively with other organs and plays a pervasive role in metabolic homeostasis
