Unintegrated parton distributions in nuclei
We study how unintegrated parton distributions in nuclei can be calculated
from the corresponding integrated partons using the EPS09 parametrization. The
role of nuclear effects is presented in terms of the ratio
for both large and small domains.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Chaotic Interaction of Langmuir Solitons and Long Wavelength Radiation
In this work we analyze the interaction of isolated solitary structures and
ion-acoustic radiation. If the radiation amplitude is small solitary structures
persists, but when the amplitude grows energy transfer towards small spatial
scales occurs. We show that transfer is particularly fast when a fixed point of
a low dimensional model is destroyed.Comment: LaTex + 4 eps file
The interplay of university and industry through the FP5 network
To improve the quality of life in a modern society it is essential to reduce
the distance between basic research and applications, whose crucial roles in
shaping today's society prompt us to seek their understanding. Existing studies
on this subject, however, have neglected the network character of the
interaction between university and industry. Here we use state-of-the-art
network theory methods to analyze this interplay in the so-called Framework
Programme--an initiative which sets out the priorities for the European Union's
research and technological development. In particular we study in the 5th
Framework Programme (FP5) the role played by companies and scientific
institutions and how they contribute to enhance the relationship between
research and industry. Our approach provides quantitative evidence that while
firms are size hierarchically organized, universities and research
organizations keep the network from falling into pieces, paving the way for an
effective knowledge transfer.Comment: 21 pages (including Appendix), 8 figures. Published online at

Roundoff-induced Coalescence of Chaotic Trajectories
Numerical experiments recently discussed in the literature show that
identical nonlinear chaotic systems linked by a common noise term (or signal)
may synchronize after a finite time. We study the process of synchronization as
function of precision of calculations. Two generic behaviors of the average
coalescence time are identified: exponential or linear. In both cases no
synchronization occurs if iterations are done with {\em infinite} precision.Comment: 6 pages, 3 postscript figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Computer simulation of the coffee leaf miner using sexual Penna aging model.
Forecast models based on climatic conditions are of great interest in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. The success of these models depends, among other factors, on the knowledge of the temperature effect on the pests? population dynamics. In this direction, a computer simulation was made for the population dynamics of the coffee leaf miner, L. coffeella, at different temperatures, considering experimental data relative to the pest. The age structure was inserted into the dynamics through sexual Penna Model. The results obtained, such as life expectancy, growth rate and annual generations? number, in agreement to those in laboratory and field conditions, show that the simulation can be used as a forecast model for controlling L. coffeella
