    N=2 Supermultiplet of Currents and Anomalous Transformations in Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

    We examine some properties of supermultiplet consisting of the U(1)_{J} current, extended supercurrents, energy-momentum tensor and the central charge in N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The superconformal improvement requires adding another supermultiplet beginning with the U(1)_{R} current. We determine the anomalous (quantum mechanical) supersymmetry transformation associated with the central charge and the energy-momentum tensor to one-loop order.Comment: 8 pages, LaTe

    Solitons and Vertex Operators in Twisted Affine Toda Field Theories

    Affine Toda field theories in two dimensions constitute families of integrable, relativistically invariant field theories in correspondence with the affine Kac-Moody algebras. The particles which are the quantum excitations of the fields display interesting patterns in their masses and coupling and which have recently been shown to extend to the classical soliton solutions arising when the couplings are imaginary. Here these results are extended from the untwisted to the twisted algebras. The new soliton solutions and their masses are found by a folding procedure which can be applied to the affine Kac-Moody algebras themselves to provide new insights into their structures. The relevant foldings are related to inner automorphisms of the associated finite dimensional Lie group which are calculated explicitly and related to what is known as the twisted Coxeter element. The fact that the twisted affine Kac-Moody algebras possess vertex operator constructions emerges naturally and is relevant to the soliton solutions.Comment: 27 pages (harvmac) + 3 figures (LaTex) at the end of the file, Swansea SWAT/93-94/1

    Hirota's Solitons in the Affine and the Conformal Affine Toda Models

    We use Hirota's method formulated as a recursive scheme to construct complete set of soliton solutions for the affine Toda field theory based on an arbitrary Lie algebra. Our solutions include a new class of solitons connected with two different type of degeneracies encountered in the Hirota's perturbation approach. We also derive an universal mass formula for all Hirota's solutions to the Affine Toda model valid for all underlying Lie groups. Embedding of the Affine Toda model in the Conformal Affine Toda model plays a crucial role in this analysis.Comment: 36 pages, LaTe

    Ecology and Distibution of Chironomid Larvae from Carroll County, Ohio (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Over 700 larvae were mounted on glass slides for identification. A total of 80 species was found. The species collected are listed with site and date of collection. The number of species is comparable to that reported in other studies. Gut contents are listed for 49 species, most of which are detritivores. Some species probably change feeding habits depending on their age and stream flow. Approximate emergence periods are given for 10 species

    Effects of Diet on Seven-Day Ceriodaphnia dubia Toxicity Tests

    Author Institution: Department of Biology, The University of AkronThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of four diets on the results of seven-day Ceriodaphnia dubia toxicity tests. Survival and reproduction were used as indices to detect the sensitivity of this species to acute and chronic copper stress. All toxicity tests were conducted using the moderately hard reconstituted water recommended in 1989 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Diet differentially affected the acute and chronic toxicity of copper. Daphnids fed Selenastrum capricomutum (alga) showed the greatest sensitivity, followed by those fed the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardti, then by animals fed a Yeast-CerophyllT1^-Trout Food (YCTF) mixture plus Selenastrum, and finally by animals fed YCTF alone. These differences may result from the poor nutritional adequacy of Selenastrum when fed alone, the different caloric contents of the diets, the increased toxicant uptake by the organisms through ingestion of copperladen algal cells, and/or copper ions sequestered by fats and insoluble substances in YCTF. We recognize that diet is an important variable in seven-day toxicity tests, and that the selection of a diet should not be based only on its effects on long-term culturing of C. dubia, but also on its possible effects on test results

    Primordial Nucleosynthesis with CMB Inputs: Probing the Early Universe and Light Element Astrophysics

    Cosmic microwave background (CMB) determinations of the baryon-to-photon ratio ηΩbaryonh2\eta \propto \Omega_{\rm baryon} h^2 will remove the last free parameter from (standard) big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) calculations. This will make BBN a much sharper probe of early universe physics, for example, greatly refining the BBN measurement of the effective number of light neutrino species, Nν,effN_{\nu,eff}. We show how the CMB can improve this limit, given current light element data. Moreover, it will become possible to constrain Nν,effN_{\nu,eff} independent of \he4, by using other elements, notably deuterium; this will allow for sharper limits and tests of systematics. For example, a 3% measurement of η\eta, together with a 10% (3%) measurement of primordial D/H, can measure Nν,effN_{\nu,eff} to a 95% confidence level of \sigma_{95%}(N_\nu) = 1.8 (1.0) if η6.0×1010\eta \sim 6.0\times 10^{-10}. If instead, one adopts the standard model value Nν,eff=3N_{\nu,eff}=3, then one can use η\eta (and its uncertainty) from the CMB to make accurate predictions for the primordial abundances. These determinations can in turn become key inputs in the nucleosynthesis history (chemical evolution) of galaxies thereby placing constraints on such models.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, plain LaTe
