Dynamics of Three Agent Games
We study the dynamics and resulting score distribution of three-agent games
where after each competition a single agent wins and scores a point. A single
competition is described by a triplet of numbers , and denoting the
probabilities that the team with the highest, middle or lowest accumulated
score wins. We study the full family of solutions in the regime, where the
number of agents and competitions is large, which can be regarded as a
hydrodynamic limit. Depending on the parameter values , we find six
qualitatively different asymptotic score distributions and we also provide a
qualitative understanding of these results. We checked our analytical results
against numerical simulations of the microscopic model and find these to be in
excellent agreement. The three agent game can be regarded as a social model
where a player can be favored or disfavored for advancement, based on his/her
accumulated score. It is also possible to decide the outcome of a three agent
game through a mini tournament of two-a gent competitions among the
participating players and it turns out that the resulting possible score
distributions are a subset of those obtained for the general three agent-games.
We discuss how one can add a steady and democratic decline rate to the model
and present a simple geometric construction that allows one to write down the
corresponding score evolution equations for -agent games
Quantifying the Re-identification Risk of Event Logs for Process Mining
Event logs recorded during the execution of business processes constitute a
valuable source of information. Applying process mining techniques to them,
event logs may reveal the actual process execution and enable reasoning on
quantitative or qualitative process properties. However, event logs often
contain sensitive information that could be related to individual process
stakeholders through background information and cross-correlation. We therefore
argue that, when publishing event logs, the risk of such re-identification
attacks must be considered. In this paper, we show how to quantify the
re-identification risk with measures for the individual uniqueness in event
logs. We also report on a large-scale study that explored the individual
uniqueness in a collection of publicly available event logs. Our results
suggest that potentially up to all of the cases in an event log may be
re-identified, which highlights the importance of privacy-preserving techniques
in process mining.Comment: Accepted to CAiSE-202
Dynamics of Multi-Player Games
We analyze the dynamics of competitions with a large number of players. In
our model, n players compete against each other and the winner is decided based
on the standings: in each competition, the mth ranked player wins. We solve for
the long time limit of the distribution of the number of wins for all n and m
and find three different scenarios. When the best player wins, the standings
are most competitive as there is one-tier with a clear differentiation between
strong and weak players. When an intermediate player wins, the standings are
two-tier with equally-strong players in the top tier and clearly-separated
players in the lower tier. When the worst player wins, the standings are least
competitive as there is one tier in which all of the players are equal. This
behavior is understood via scaling analysis of the nonlinear evolution
equations.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Exact time evolution and master equations for the damped harmonic oscillator
Using the exact path integral solution for the damped harmonic oscillator it
is shown that in general there does not exist an exact dissipative Liouville
operator describing the dynamics of the oscillator for arbitrary initial bath
preparations. Exact non-stationary Liouville operators can be found only for
particular preparations. Three physically meaningful examples are examined. An
exact new master equation is derived for thermal initial conditions. Second,
the Liouville operator governing the time-evolution of equilibrium correlations
is obtained. Third, factorizing initial conditions are studied. Additionally,
one can show that there are approximate Liouville operators independent of the
initial preparation describing the long time dynamics under appropriate
conditions. The general form of these approximate master equations is derived
and the coefficients are determined for special cases of the bath spectral
density including the Ohmic, Drude and weak coupling cases. The connection with
earlier work is discussed.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
Integrated multidimensional sustainability assessment of energy system transformation pathways
Sustainable development embraces a broad spectrum of social, economic and ecological aspects. Thus, a sustainable transformation process of energy systems is inevitably multidimensional and needs to go beyond climate impact and cost considerations. An approach for an integrated and interdisciplinary sustainability assessment of energy system transformation pathways is presented here. It first integrates energy system modeling with a multidimensional impact assessment that focuses on life cycle-based environmental and macroeconomic impacts. Then, stakeholders’ preferences with respect to defined sustainability indicators are inquired, which are finally integrated into a comparative scenario evaluation through a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), all in one consistent assessment framework. As an illustrative example, this holistic approach is applied to the sustainability assessment of ten different transformation strategies for Germany. Applying multi-criteria decision analysis reveals that both ambitious (80%) and highly ambitious (95%) carbon reduction scenarios can achieve top sustainability ranks, depending on the underlying energy transformation pathways and respective scores in other sustainability dimensions. Furthermore, this research highlights an increasingly dominant contribution of energy systems’ upstream chains on total environmental impacts, reveals rather small differences in macroeconomic effects between different scenarios and identifies the transition among societal segments and climate impact minimization as the most important stakeholder preferences
Quantum Theory and Time Asymmetry
The relation between quantum measurement and thermodynamically irreversible
processes is investigated. The reduction of the state vector is fundamentally
asymmetric in time and shows an observer-relatedness which may explain the
double interpretation of the state vector as a representation of physical
states as well as of information about them. The concept of relevance being
used in all statistical theories of irreversible thermodynamics is shown to be
based on the same observer-relatedness. Quantum theories of irreversible
processes implicitly use an objectivized process of state vector reduction. The
conditions for the reduction are discussed, and I speculate that the final
(subjective) observer system might even be carried by a spacetime point.Comment: Latex version of a paper published in 1979 (with minor revisions), 18

Conformance checking using activity and trace embeddings
Conformance checking describes process mining techniques used to compare an event log and a corresponding process model. In this paper, we propose an entirely new approach to conformance checking based on neural network-based embeddings. These embeddings are vector representations of every activity/task present in the model and log, obtained via act2vec, a Word2vec based model. Our novel conformance checking approach applies the Word Mover’s Distance to the activity embeddings of traces in order to measure fitness and precision. In addition, we investigate a more efficiently calculated lower bound of the former metric, i.e. the Iterative Constrained Transfers measure. An alternative method using trace2vec, a Doc2vec based model, to train and compare vector representations of the process instances themselves is also introduced. These methods are tested in different settings and compared to other conformance checking techniques, showing promising results
Equation-Free Multiscale Computations in Social Networks: from Agent-based Modelling to Coarse-grained Stability and Bifurcation Analysis
We focus at the interface between multiscale computations, bifurcation theory
and social networks. In particular we address how the Equation-Free approach, a
recently developed computational framework, can be exploited to systematically
extract coarse-grained, emergent dynamical information by bridging detailed,
agent-based models of social interactions on networks, with macroscopic,
systems-level, continuum numerical analysis tools. For our illustrations we use
a simple dynamic agent-based model describing the propagation of information
between individuals interacting under mimesis in a social network with private
and public information. We describe the rules governing the evolution of the
agents emotional state dynamics and discover, through simulation, multiple
stable stationary states as a function of the network topology. Using the
Equation-Free approach we track the dependence of these stationary solutions on
network parameters and quantify their stability in the form of coarse-grained
bifurcation diagrams
