Deep neural networks allow expert-level brain meningioma segmentation and present potential for improvement of clinical practice

    Get PDF
Accurate brain meningioma segmentation and volumetric assessment are critical for serial patient follow-up, surgical planning and monitoring response to treatment. Current gold standard of manual labeling is a time-consuming process, subject to inter-user variability. Fully-automated algorithms for meningioma segmentation have the potential to bring volumetric analysis into clinical and research workflows by increasing accuracy and efficiency, reducing inter-user variability and saving time. Previous research has focused solely on segmentation tasks without assessment of impact and usability of deep learning solutions in clinical practice. Herein, we demonstrate a three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) that performs expert-level, automated meningioma segmentation and volume estimation on MRI scans. A 3D-CNN was initially trained by segmenting entire brain volumes using a dataset of 10,099 healthy brain MRIs. Using transfer learning, the network was then specifically trained on meningioma segmentation using 806 expert-labeled MRIs. The final model achieved a median performance of 88.2% reaching the spectrum of current inter-expert variability (82.6-91.6%). We demonstrate in a simulated clinical scenario that a deep learning approach to meningioma segmentation is feasible, highly accurate and has the potential to improve current clinical practice

Observations of the December 13 and 14, 2006, Solar Particle Events in the 80 MeV/n - 3 GeV/n range from space with PAMELA detector

We present the space spectrometer PAMELA observations of proton and helium fluxes during the December 13 and 14, 2006 solar particle events. This is the first direct measurement of the solar energetic particles in space with a single instrument in the energy range from \sim 80 MeV/n up to \sim 3 GeV/n. In the event of December 13 measured energy spectra of solar protons and helium were compared with results obtained by neutron monitors and other detectors. Our measurements show a spectral behaviour different from those derived from the neutron monitor network. No satisfactory analytical fitting was found for the energy spectra. During the first hours of the December 13 event solar energetic particles spectra were close to the exponential form demonstrating rather significant temporal evolution. Solar He with energy up to ~1 GeV/n was recorded on December 13. In the event of December 14 energy of solar protons reached ~600 MeV whereas maximum energy of He was below 100 MeV/n. The spectra were slightly bended in the lower energy range and preserved their form during the second event. Difference in the particle flux appearance and temporal evolution in these two events may argue for a special conditions leading to acceleration of solar particles up to relativistic energies.Comment: Accepted for publication on Astrophysical journa

Superconductivity in Ropes of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We report measurements on ropes of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNT) in low-resistance contact to non-superconducting (normal) metallic pads, at low voltage and at temperatures down to 70 mK. In one sample, we find a two order of magnitude resistance drop below 0.55 K, which is destroyed by a magnetic field of the order of 1T, or by a d.c. current greater than 2.5 microA. These features strongly suggest the existence of superconductivity in ropes of SWNT.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

Synthesis by High-Efficiency Liquid-Phase (HELP) Method of Oligonucleotides Conjugated with High-Molecular Weight Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs)

    Get PDF
The chemical modification of synthetic oligonucleotides has recently been investigated to improve their pharmacological utilization. In addition to chemical alterations of the backbone and of the heterocyclic bases, their conjugation with amphiphylic moieties, such as the polyethylene glycol has been proposed. The large scale production of these molecules as demanded for commercial purposes is hampered by the heterogeneity of the solid-phase processes and by the low reactivity of high-molecular weight PEGs in solution. A new synthetic procedure based on the recently developed liquid-phase method (HELP), has been set up to overcome these limitations

Deuteron and antideuteron production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

    Get PDF
The production of deuterons and antideuterons in the transverse momentum range 1.1 < p_T < 4.3 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV has been studied by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. A coalescence analysis comparing the deuteron and antideuteron spectra with those of protons and antiprotons, has been performed. The coalescence probability is equal for both deuterons and antideuterons and increases as a function of p_T, which is consistent with an expanding collision zone. Comparing (anti)proton yields p_bar/p = 0.73 +/- 0.01, with (anti)deuteron yields: d_bar/d = 0.47 +/- 0.03, we estimate that n_bar/n = 0.64 +/- 0.04.Comment: 326 authors, 6 pages text, 5 figures, 1 Table. High-pT pi^zero Production with Respect to the Reaction Plane in Au + Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of high-\pT neutral pion neutral pion production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV by the PHENIX experiment are presented. The data included in this paper were collected during the 2004 RHIC running period and represent approximately an order of magnitude increase in the number of analyzed events relative to previously published results. Azimuthal angle distributions of pi^0s detected in the PHENIX electromagnetic calorimeters are measured relative to the reaction plane determined event-by-event using the forward and backward beam-beam counters. Amplitudes of the second Fourier component (v_2) of the angular distributions are presented as a function of pi^0 transverse momentum p_T for different bins in collision centrality. Measured reaction plane dependent pi^0 yields are used to determine the azimuthal dependence of the pi^0 suppression as a function of p_T, R_AA (Delta phi,p_T). A jet-quenching motivated geometric analysis is presented that attempts to simultaneously describe the centrality dependence and reaction plane angle dependence of the pi^0 suppression in terms of the path lengths of hypothetical parent partons in the medium. This set of results allows for a detailed examination of the influence of geometry in the collision region, and of the interplay between collective flow and jet-quenching effects along the azimuthal axis.Comment: 344 authors, 35 pages text, RevTeX-4, 24 figures, 8 tables. Azimuthal Angle Correlations for Rapidity Separated Hadron Pairs in d+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

We report on two-particle azimuthal angle correlations between charged hadrons at forward/backward (deuteron/gold going direction) rapidity and charged hadrons at mid-rapidity in deuteron-gold (d+Au) and proton-proton (p+p) collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Jet structures are observed in the correlations which we quantify in terms of the conditional yield and angular width of away side partners. The kinematic region studied here samples partons in the gold nucleus carrying nucleon momentum fraction x~0.1 to x~0.01. Within this range, we find no x dependence of the jet structure in d+Au collisions.Comment: 330 authors, 6 pages text, 4 figures, no tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. Transverse-energy distributions at midrapidity in pp++pp, dd++Au, and Au++Au collisions at sNN=62.4\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4--200~GeV and implications for particle-production models

Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, d\Et/d\eta, are presented for pp++pp, dd++Au, and Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and additionally for Au++Au collisions at sNN=62.4\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4 and 130 GeV. The d\Et/d\eta distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants NpartN_{\rm part}, number of binary collisions NcollN_{\rm coll}, and number of constituent-quark participants NqpN_{qp} calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au++Au, \mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{\rm part} increases with NpartN_{\rm part}, while \mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{qp} is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, dET/dη(1x)Npart/2+xNcolldE_{T}/d\eta \propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}, which has been used to represent ETE_T distributions, is simply a proxy for NqpN_{qp}, and that the NcollN_{\rm coll} term does not represent a hard-scattering component in ETE_T distributions. The dET/dηdE_{T}/d\eta distributions of Au++Au and dd++Au are then calculated from the measured pp++pp ETE_T distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au++Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the dd++Au data, the additive-quark model does not.Comment: 391 authors, 24 pages, 19 figures, and 15 Tables. Centrality dependence of charged hadron production in deuteron+gold and nucleon+gold collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

We present transverse momentum (p_T) spectra of charged hadrons measured in deuteron-gold and nucleon-gold collisions at \sqrts = 200 GeV for four centrality classes. Nucleon-gold collisions were selected by tagging events in which a spectator nucleon was observed in one of two forward rapidity detectors. The spectra and yields were investigated as a function of the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, \nu, suffered by deuteron nucleons. A comparison of charged particle yields to those in p+p collisions show that the yield per nucleon-nucleon collision saturates with \nu for high momentum particles. We also present the charged hadron to neutral pion ratios as a function of p_T.Comment: 330 authors, 15 pages text, 16 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Double Helicity Asymmetry in Inclusive Mid-Rapidity neutral pion Production for Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV

    Get PDF
We present a measurement of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in inclusive pi^0 production in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. The data were taken at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with average beam polarizations of 26%. The measurements are the first of a program to study the longitudinal spin structure of the proton, using strongly interacting probes, at collider energies. The asymmetry is presented for transverse momenta 1-5 GeV/c at mid-rapidity, where next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations describe the unpolarized cross section well. The observed asymmetry is small and is compared with a NLO pQCD calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.Comment: 326 authors, 6 pages text, RevTeX, 3 figures, 1 table.
