A longitudinal study of abnormalities on MRI and disability from multiple sclerosis
Background: In patients with isolated syndromes that are clinically suggestive of multiple sclerosis, such as optic neuritis or brain-stem or spinal cord syndromes, the presence of lesions as determined by T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain increases the likelihood that multiple sclerosis will develop. We sought to determine the relation between early lesion volume, changes in volume, and long-term disability.
Methods: Seventy-one patients in a serial MRI study of patients with isolated syndromes were reassessed after a mean of 14.1 years. Disability was measured with the use of Kurtzke's Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS; possible range, 0 to 10, with a higher score indicating a greater degree of disability).
Results: Clinically definite multiple sclerosis developed in 44 of the 50 patients (88 percent) with abnormal results on MRI at presentation and in 4 of 21 patients (19 percent) with normal results on MRI. The median EDSS score at follow-up for those with multiple sclerosis was 3.25 (range, 0 to 10); 31 percent had an EDSS score of 6 or more (including three patients whose deaths were due to multiple sclerosis). The EDSS score at 14 years correlated moderately with lesion volume on MRI at 5 years (r=0.60) and with the increase in lesion volume over the first 5 years (r=0.61).
Conclusions: In patients who first present with isolated syndromes suggestive of multiple sclerosis, the increases in the volume of the lesions seen on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in the first five years correlate with the degree of long-term disability from multiple sclerosis. This relation is only moderate, so the volume of the lesions alone may not be an adequate basis for decisions about the use of disease-modifying treatment
Sensory acceptance of organic and conventional food by children in the age of 2 to 7 years
This study is initialized to find out which sensory factors might influence the acceptance of organic food by young children. 138 children aged from 2 to 7 years were recruited at the German Research Institute of Child Nutrition in Dortmund. All these children are participating in the DONALD-Study. Detailed nutrition records are available about breastfeeding and feeding of these children from birth to the age of one and further on. In a 2-year testing-period children tasted organic and conventional food in two-sided Paired Comparison Tests. In both years parents were asked a number of questions, mainly about the nutrition behaviour of their children. Sensory tests were analyzed and connected in different ways: with data of sensory profiles, nutrition records and different questionnaires
Invariant measure in hot gauge theories
We investigate properties of the invariant measure for the gauge field
in finite temperature gauge theories both on the lattice and in the continuum
theory. We have found the cancellation of the naive measure in both cases. The
result is quite general and holds at any finite temperature. We demonstrate,
however, that there is no cancellation at any temperature for the invariant
measure contribution understood as Z(N) symmetrical distribution of gauge field
configurations. The spontaneous breakdown of Z(N) global symmetry is entirely
due to the potential energy term of the gluonic interaction in the effective
potential. The effects of this measure on the effective action, mechanism of

Psychopathological characteristics in patients with arginine vasopressin deficiency (central diabetes insipidus) and primary polydipsia compared to healthy controls
Objective: Distinguishing arginine vasopressin deficiency (AVP-D; central diabetes insipidus) from primary polydipsia (PP), commonly referred to as psychogenic polydipsia, is challenging. Psychopathologic findings, commonly used for PP diagnosis in clinical practice, are rarely evaluated in AVP-D patients, and no comparative data between the two conditions currently exist. Design: Data from two studies involving 82 participants [39 AVP-D, 28 PP, and 15 healthy controls (HC)]. Methods: Psychological evaluations were conducted using standardized questionnaires measuring anxiety [State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)], alexithymia [Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20)], depressive symptoms (Beck’s Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and overall mental health [Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36)]. Higher STAI, TAS-20, and BDI-II scores suggest elevated anxiety, alexithymia, and depression, while higher SF-36 scores signify better overall mental health. Results: Compared to HC, patients with AVP-D and PP showed higher levels of anxiety (HC 28 points [24–31] vs AVP-D 36 points [31–45]; vs PP 38 points [33–46], P < .01), alexithymia (HC 30 points [29–37] vs AVP-D 43 points [35–54]; vs PP 46 points [37–55], P < .01), and depression (HC 1 point [0–2] vs AVP-D 7 points [4–14]; vs PP 7 points [3–13], P < .01). Levels of anxiety, alexithymia, and depression showed no difference between both patient groups (P = .58, P = .90, P = .50, respectively). Compared to HC, patients with AVP-D and PP reported similarly reduced self-reported overall mental health scores (HC 84 [68–88] vs AVP-D 60 [52–80], P = .05; vs PP 60 [47–74], P < .01).Conclusion: This study reveals heightened anxiety, alexithymia, depression, and diminished overall mental health in patients with AVP-D and PP. The results emphasize the need for careful interpretation of psychopathological characteristics to differentiate between AVP-D and PP.</p

Infrared fixed point in quantum Einstein gravity
We performed the renormalization group analysis of the quantum Einstein
gravity in the deep infrared regime for different types of extensions of the
model. It is shown that an attractive infrared point exists in the broken
symmetric phase of the model. It is also shown that due to the Gaussian fixed
point the IR critical exponent of the correlation length is 1/2. However,
there exists a certain extension of the model which gives finite correlation
length in the broken symmetric phase. It typically appears in case of models
possessing a first order phase transitions as is demonstrated on the example of

Airborne observations of the Eyjafjalla volcano ash cloud over Europe during air space closure in April and May 2010

This work is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 LicenseAirborne lidar and in-situ measurements of aerosols and trace gases were performed in volcanic ash plumes over Europe between Southern Germany and Iceland with the Falcon aircraft during the eruption period of the Eyjafjalla1 volcano between 19 April and 18 May 2010. Flight planning and measurement analyses were supported by a refined Meteosat ash product and trajectory model analysis. The volcanic ash plume was observed with lidar directly over the volcano and up to a distance of 2700 km downwind, and up to 120 h plume ages. Aged ash layers were between a few 100 m to 3 km deep, occurred between 1 and 7 km altitude, and were typically 100 to 300 km wide. Particles collected by impactors had diameters up to 20 μm diameter, with size and age dependent composition. Ash mass concentrations were derived from optical particle spectrometers for a particle density of 2.6 g cm-3 and various values of the refractive index (RI, real part: 1.59; 3 values for the imaginary part: 0, 0.004 and 0.008). The mass concentrations, effective diameters and related optical properties were compared with ground-based lidar observations. Theoretical considerations of particle sedimentation constrain the particle diameters to those obtained for the lower RI values. The ash mass concentration results have an uncertainty of a factor of two. The maximum ash mass concentration encountered during the 17 flights with 34 ash plume penetrations was below 1 mg m-3. The Falcon flew in ash clouds up to about 0.8 mg m-3 for a few minutes and in an ash cloud with approximately 0.2 mg -3 mean-concentration for about one hour without engine damage. The ash plumes were rather dry and correlated with considerable CO and SO2 increases and O3 decreases. To first order, ash concentration and SO2 mixing ratio in the plumes decreased by a factor of two within less than a day. In fresh plumes, the SO2 and CO concentration increases were correlated with the ash mass concentration. The ash plumes were often visible slantwise as faint dark layers, even for concentrations below 0.1 mg m-3. The large abundance of volatile Aitken mode particles suggests previous nucleation of sulfuric acid droplets. The effective diameters range between 0.2 and 3 μm with considerable surface and volume contributions from the Aitken and coarse mode aerosol, respectively. The distal ash mass flux on 2 May was of the order of 500 (240-1600) kgs -1. The volcano induced about 10 (2.5-50) Tg of distal ash mass and about 3 (0.6-23) Tg of SO2 during the whole eruption period. The results of the Falcon flights were used to support the responsible agencies in their decisions concerning air traffic in the presence of volcanic ash.Peer reviewe
Measurement of shower development and its Moli\`ere radius with a four-plane LumiCal test set-up
A prototype of a luminometer, designed for a future e+e- collider detector,
and consisting at present of a four-plane module, was tested in the CERN PS
accelerator T9 beam. The objective of this beam test was to demonstrate a
multi-plane tungsten/silicon operation, to study the development of the
electromagnetic shower and to compare it with MC simulations. The Moli\`ere
radius has been determined to be 24.0 +/- 0.6 (stat.) +/- 1.5 (syst.) mm using
a parametrization of the shower shape. Very good agreement was found between

The visibility of IQHE at sharp edges: Experimental proposals based on interactions and edge electrostatics
The influence of the incompressible strips on the integer quantized Hall
effect (IQHE) is investigated, considering a cleaved-edge overgrown (CEO)
sample as an experimentally realizable sharp edge system. We propose a set of
experiments to clarify the distinction between the large-sample limit when bulk
disorder defines the IQHE plateau width and the small-sample limit smaller than
the disorder correlation length, when self-consistent edge electrostatics
define the IQHE plateau width. The large-sample or bulk QH regime is described
by the usual localization picture, whereas the small-sample or edge regime is
discussed within the compressible/incompressible strips picture, known as the
screening theory of QH edges. Utilizing the unusually sharp edge profiles of
the CEO samples, a Hall bar design is proposed to manipulate the edge potential
profile from smooth to extremely sharp. By making use of a side-gate
perpendicular to the two dimensional electron system, it is shown that the
plateau widths can be changed or even eliminated altogether. Hence, the
visibility of IQHE is strongly influenced when adjusting the edge potential
profile and/or changing the dc current direction under high currents in the
non-linear transport regime. As a second investigation, we consider two
different types of ohmic contacts, namely highly transmitting (ideal) and
highly reflecting (non-ideal) contacts. We show that if the injection contacts
are non-ideal, however still ohmic, it is possible to measure directly the
non-quantized transport taking place at the bulk of the CEO samples. The
results of the experiments we propose will clarify the influence of the edge
potential profile and the quality of the contacts, under quantized Hall
