Preparation of macroscopic quantum superposition states of a cavity field via coupling to a superconducting charge qubit
We propose how to generate macroscopic quantum superposition states using a
microwave cavity containing a superconducting charge qubit. Based on the
measurement of charge states, we show that the superpositions of two
macroscopically distinguishable coherent states of a single-mode cavity field
can be generated by a controllable interaction between a cavity field and a
charge qubit. After such superpositions of the cavity field are created, the
interaction can be switched off by the classical magnetic field, and there is
no information transfer between the cavity field and the charge qubit. We also
discuss the generation of the superpositions of two squeezed coherent states.Comment: 6 page
Equilibrium states and their entropy densities in gauge-invariant C*-systems
A gauge-invariant C*-system is obtained as the fixed point subalgebra of the
infinite tensor product of full matrix algebras under the tensor product
unitary action of a compact group. In the paper, thermodynamics is studied on
such systems and the chemical potential theory developed by Araki, Haag,
Kastler and Takesaki is used. As a generalization of quantum spin system, the
equivalence of the KMS condition, the Gibbs condition and the variational
principle is shown for translation-invariant states. The entropy density of
extremal equilibrium states is also investigated in relation to macroscopic

Finite-time blowup for a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation
We prove that negative energy solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau
equation blow up in finite time,
where \alpha >0 and \pi /2<\theta <\pi /2. For a fixed initial value , we
obtain estimates of the blow-up time as . It turns out that stays bounded (respectively, goes to
infinity) as in the case where the solution of the
limiting nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation blows up in finite time

Experience with statically-generated proxies for facilitating Java runtime specialisation
Issues pertaining to mechanisms which can be used to change the behaviour of Java classes at runtime are discussed. The proxy mechanism is compared to, and contrasted with other standard approaches to this problem. Some of the problems the proxy mechanism is subject to are expanded upon. The question of whether statically-developed proxies are a viable alternative to bytecode rewriting was investigated by means of the JavaCloak system, which uses statically-generated proxies to alter the runtime behaviour of externally-developed code. The issues addressed include ensuring the type safety, dealing with the self problem, object encapsulation, and issues of object identity and equality. Some performance figures are provided which demonstrate the load the JavaCloak proxy mechanism places on the system
Exploring Learning Problems of Filipino Nurse Candidates Working in Japan: Based on the Results of a Practice National Board Examination of Japan Given in English
This article investigates the status of the education and training of Filipino nurse candidates who have been working in Japan under the Japan-Philippine Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA). A survey was conducted among Filipino nurse candidates, using a practice examination based on the English version of Japan’s National Board Examination for Registered Nurses in 2009. Categorized by area, the mean correct answer rate for nursing-related questions ranged between 61% and 73%; the rate for questions concerning basic knowledge of body functions and diseases ranged between 55% and 57%. There was a large gap in terms of the results of the examination between those who had previously seen the exam questions and those who had never seen them. While 57.1% of those who had previously seen the questions satisfied the acceptance criteria, only 23.7%of those who had never viewed the test satisfied it. Based on these results, the factors which serve as obstacles that Filipino nurse candidates encounter in passing the national examination include not only difficulties in acquiring Japanese proficiency but also differences between Japan and the Philippines in respect to the nursing education curriculum and basic nursing policies

An importance of diazotrophic cyanobacteria as a primary producer during Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event 2
International audienceIn Livello Bonarelli black shale deposited during Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE-2, ca. 94 Ma), nitrogen isotopic compositions of bulk sediments are in a narrow range from ?2.7 to ?0.7. We also determined molecular distribution and nitrogen isotopic compositions of geoporphyrins extracted from the black shale. The nitrogen isotopic compositions of C32 Ni deoxophylloerythroetioporphyrin (DPEP) and total Ni porphyrins are ?3.5 and ?3.3, respectively, leading us to the estimation that the mean nitrogen isotopic composition of photoautotrophic cell was around +1 during the formation of Bonarelli black shale. This value is suggestive of N2-fixation a dominant process for these photoautotrophs when assimilating nitrogen. Furthermore, Ni-chelated C32 DPEP, derived mainly from chlorophyll a was the highest concentration. Based on these evidence, we conclude that diazotrophic cyanobacteria were major primary producers during that time. The cyanobacteria may be key photoautotrophs during the formation of black shale type sediments intermittently observed throughout the later half of the Earth's history, and hence may have played a crucial role in the evolution of geochemical cycles
Spin Gap in a Doped Kondo Chain
We show that the Kondo chain away from half-filling has a spin gap upon the
introduction of an additional direct Heisenberg coupling between localized
spins. This is understood in the weak-Kondo-coupling limit of the
Heisenberg-Kondo lattice model by bosonization and in the strong-coupling limit
by a mapping to a modified t-J model. Only for certain ranges of filling and
Heisenberg coupling does the spin gap phase extend from weak to strong

Singular responses of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquids
When a local potential changes abruptly in time, an electron gas shifts to a
new state which at long times is orthogonal to the one in the absence of the
local potential. This is known as Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe and it
is relevant for the so-called X-ray edge or Fermi edge singularity, and for
tunneling into an interacting one dimensional system of fermions. It often
happens that the finite frequency response of the photon absorption or the
tunneling density of states exhibits a singular behavior as a function of
frequency: where is a
threshold frequency and is an exponent characterizing the singular
response. In this paper singular responses of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquids
are reviewed. Such responses most often do not fall into the familiar form
above, but instead typically exhibit logarithmic corrections and display a much
higher universality in terms of the microscopic interactions in the theory.
Specific predictions are made, the current experimental situation is
summarized, and key outstanding theoretical issues related to spin-incoherent
