    Experimental tests of pseudo-complex General Relativity

    Based on previous publications exploring pseudo-complex General Relativity (pc-GR) we present a selection of observable consequences of pc-GR and possible ways to experimentally access them. Whenever possible we compare the results to Einstein's GR and differences are worked out in detail. We propose experimental tests to check the predictions of pc-GR for the orbital frequency of test particles, the gravitational redshift effect and the last stable orbit. We will show that the orbital frequency of test particles at a given radius in pc-GR is in general lower compared to standard GR. Also the effect of frame dragging is modified (weakened) in pc-GR. Concerning the gravitational redshift of a radiation emitting object we find that it is also lower in pc-GR than in standard GR.     Principles of the therapy of bone infections in adult extremities: Are there any new developments?

    Septic diseases of the bone and immediately surrounding soft tissues can be differentiated into osteitis or osteomyelitis. Both are a most serious diagnosis in modern traumatology and orthopaedic surgery. The basis for treatment is a highly specific, problem-adapted therapy with a defined strategy, the paramount goal being to preserve the stable weightbearing bones, maintain a good mechanical axis with correctly working muscles and joints, and avoid permanent disability. “State-of-the-art” therapy of osteitis and osteomyelitis has two priorities: (a) Eradication of the infection; (b) Reconstruction of bone and soft tissue. Surgical treatment with resection of the affected bone segments and soft tissue, followed by reconstructive methods continues to be the main basic therapy, and is supported by local and systemic antibiotics and adjuvant methods such as hyperbaric oxygen. This article provides an overview of the diagnostic features and different surgical procedures as well as the current literature in order to reach the above named goals

    The calibration of photographic and spectroscopic films: Reciprocity failure and thermal responses of IIaO film at liquid nitrogen temperatures

    Reciprocity failure was examined for IIaO spectroscopic film. The results indicate reciprocity failure occurs at three distinct minimum points in time; 15 min, 30 min and 90 min. The results are unique because theory suggests only one minimum reciprocity failure point should occur. When incubating 70mm IIaO film for 15 and 30 min at temperatures of 30, 40, 50, and 60 C and then placing in a liquid nitrogen bath at a temperature of -190 C the film demonstrated an increase of the optical density when developed at a warm-up time of 30 min. Longer warm-up periods of 1, 2 and 3 hrs yield a decrease in optical density of the darker wedge patterns; whereas, shorter warm-up times yield an overall increase in the optical densities

    Human osteochondritis dissecans fragment-derived chondrocyte characteristics ex vivo, after monolayer expansion-induced de-differentiation, and after re-differentiation in alginate bead culture

    Background Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) is a therapy for articular cartilage and osteochondral lesions that relies on notch- or trochlea-derived primary chondrocytes. An alternative cell source for ACI could be osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) fragment-derived chondrocytes. Assessing the potential of these cells, we investigated their characteristics ex vivo and after monolayer expansion, as monolayer expansion is an integral step of ACI. However, as monolayer expansion can induce de-differentiation, we asked whether monolayer-induced de-differentiation can be reverted through successive alginate bead culture. Methods Chondrocytes were isolated from the OCD fragments of 15 patient knees with ICRS grades 3–4 lesions for ex vivo analyses, primary alginate bead culture, monolayer expansion, and alginate bead culture following monolayer expansion for attempting re-differentiation. We determined yield, viability, and the mRNA expression of aggrecan and type I, II, and X collagen.     Dissipative dynamics of an extended magnetic nanostructure: Spin necklace in a metallic environment

    We study theoretically the dynamics of an ``xxz'' spin necklace coupled to a conduction electron sea, a model system for a nanostructure in a dissipative environment. We extract the long-time behavior via a mapping to a multichannel Coulomb gas problem followed by a scaling analysis. The strong quantum fluctuations of the necklace cause a nontrivial dependence of couplings on system size which we extract via an analysis involving the ``boundary condition changing operator'', and confirm via a detailed numerical evaluation of one case.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Preservation of the shoulder joint by the use of a hybrid-spacer after septic loosening of a reversed total shoulder joint arthroplasty: a case report

    Infections of a total joint replacement (TJR) of the shoulder are rare complications. After revision surgery, the incidence rises dramatically. If infection occurs, it leads to a loss of function and may be devastating to the joint. Treatment options range from single- to multiple-staged revision programs, permanent resection arthroplasty or exarticulation. In this case, a reversed shoulder endoprosthesis, which was implanted after multiple revisions of a TJR due to a posttraumatic omarthrosis and rotator cuff insufficiency, got infected. A hybrid-spacer, made of a humeral nail and a custom-made PMMA spacer forming the humeral head, was used during the revision program. After two operations, clinical and paraclinical signs turned back to normal. The patient felt well and was satisfied with the result of the therapy. The hybrid-spacer was then left in situ as a definitive solution with a satisfying range of motion. This case report shows that a hybrid-spacer can be helpful in the treatment of an infected shoulder TJR

    Classical Stabilization of Homogeneous Extra Dimensions

    If spacetime possesses extra dimensions of size and curvature radii much larger than the Planck or string scales, the dynamics of these extra dimensions should be governed by classical general relativity. We argue that in general relativity, it is highly nontrivial to obtain solutions where the extra dimensions are static and are dynamically stable to small perturbations. We also illustrate that intuition on equilibrium and stability built up from non-gravitational physics can be highly misleading. For all static, homogeneous solutions satisfying the null energy condition, we show that the Ricci curvature of space must be nonnegative in all directions. Much of our analysis focuses on a class of spacetime models where space consists of a product of homogeneous and isotropic geometries. A dimensional reduction of these models is performed, and their stability to perturbations that preserve the spatial symmetries is analyzed. We conclude that the only physically realistic examples of classically stabilized large extra dimensions are those in which the extra-dimensional manifold is positively curved.Comment: 25 pages; minor changes, improved reference

    External iliac artery thrombosis associated with the ilio-inguinal approach in the management of acetabular fractures: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>The ilio-inguinal approach has come to be used routinely in the management of acetabular fractures involving the anterior wall. Thrombotic complications following surgery via this route are a serious, but rare, complication.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 66-year-old male patient who slipped on an icy pavement and fell on his left hip. He sustained a comminuted acetabular fracture (a transtectal T-fracture with an incomplete posterior stem through the ischial tuberosity), and was operated on five days later, via an ilio-inguinal approach. In the recovery room, his left lower limb was found to be cool and pale. Immediate re-exploration showed a left external iliac artery thrombosis, and thrombectomy was performed. In the surgical management of acetabular fractures, thrombosis of a major pelvic artery is a rare but potentially devastating complication. We discuss the possible aetiology (initial vessel trauma versus iatrogenic, intraoperative arterial injury) and pathomechanism, and wish to draw attention to this complication and to recommend ways in which it can be prevented.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We recommend circulation monitoring in patients with acetabular fractures, especially where nerve blocks and/or deep sedation/analgesia have been used. High-risk patients should be identified and subjected to intensive preoperative screening, including ultrasonography and if necessary angiography.</p
