Holographic bulk viscosity: GPR vs EO
Recently Eling and Oz (EO) proposed a formula for the holographic bulk
viscosity, in arXiv:1103.1657, derived from the null horizon focusing equation.
This formula seems different from that obtained earlier by Gubser, Pufu and
Rocha (GPR) in arXiv:0806.0407 calculated from the IR limit of the two-point
function of the trace of the stress tensor. The two were shown to agree only
for some simple scaling cases. We point out that the two formulae agree in two
non-trivial holographic theories describing RG flows. The first is the strongly
coupled N=2* gauge theory plasma. The second is the semi-phenomenological model

Gravitational collapse and thermalization in the hard wall model
We study a simple example of holographic thermalization in a confining field
theory: the homogeneous injection of energy in the hard wall model. Working in
an amplitude expansion, we find black brane formation for sufficiently fast
energy injection and a scattering wave solution for sufficiently slow
injection. We comment on our expectations for more sophisticated holographic

Cholesterol content and fatty acid composition of most consumed turkish hard and soft cheeses
Cholesterol content and fatty acid composition of 29 different most popular hard (Tulum, Teneke Tulum, aged Kashar, and fresh Kashar cheeses) and soft cheese (White Pickled cheeses) samples from the markets of Izmir in Turkey were determined by gas chromatography. Cholesterol content of hard and soft cheeses ranged from 46.47 to 138.99 mg/100 g fat. Relative to the mean cholesterol values, the highest cholesterol content was found in fresh Kashar cheese. The fatty acid composition is quite similar in all samples. As concerns the saturated fatty acids, the most abundant in the cheeses investigated were palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0), and myristic acids (C14:0). Palmitic acid levels were found to be the highest of the saturated fatty acid in all samples. Oleic acid content (5.93-29.38 mg/100 g fatty acids) in all cheeses was considerable higher than those of other unsaturated fatty acids. No specific trend or correlation between cholesterol and individual fatty acids was observed
The holographic quantum effective potential at finite temperature and density
We develop a formalism that allows the computation of the quantum effective
potential of a scalar order parameter in a class of holographic theories at
finite temperature and charge density. The effective potential is a valuable
tool for studying the ground state of the theory, symmetry breaking patterns
and phase transitions. We derive general formulae for the effective potential
and apply them to determine the phase transition temperature and density in the

Cyclic dinucleotides in oral bacteria and in oral biofilms
Oral cavity acts as a reservoir of bacterial pathogens for systemic infections and several oral microorganisms have been linked to systemic diseases. Quorum sensing and cyclic dinucleotides, two “decision-making” signaling systems, communicate to regulate physiological process in bacteria. Discovery of cyclic dinucleotides has a long history, but the progress in our understanding of how cyclic dinucleotides regulate bacterial lifestyle is relatively new. Oral microorganisms form some of the most intricate biofilms, yet c-di-GMP, and c-di-AMP signaling have been rarely studied in oral biofilms. Recent studies demonstrated that, with the aid of bacterial messenger molecules and their analogs, it is possible to activate host innate and adaptive immune responses and epithelial integrity with a dose that is relevant to inhibit bacterial virulence mechanisms, such as fimbriae and exopolysaccharide production, biofilm formation, and host cell invasion. The aim of this perspective article is to present available information on cyclic dinucleotides in oral bacteria and in oral biofilms. Moreover, technologies that can be used to detect cyclic dinucleotides in oral biofilms are described. Finally, directions for future research are highlighted.</p
Holographic Conformal Window - A Bottom Up Approach
We propose a five-dimensional framework for modeling the background geometry
associated to ordinary Yang-Mills (YM) as well as to nonsupersymmetric gauge
theories possessing an infrared fixed point with fermions in various
representations of the underlying gauge group. The model is based on the
improved holographic approach, on the string theory side, and on the
conjectured all-orders beta function for the gauge theory one. We first analyze
the YM gauge theory. We then investigate the effects of adding flavors and show
that, in the holographic description of the conformal window, the geometry
becomes AdS when approaching the ultraviolet and the infrared regimes. As the
number of flavors increases within the conformal window we observe that the

Regulation of gingival epithelial cytokine response by bacterial cyclic dinucleotides
Background: Cyclic dinucleotides (cyclic di-guanosine monophosphate
(c-di-GMP) and cyclic di-adenosine monophosphate (c-di-AMP)) and
lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are pathogen-associated molecular patterns
(PAMPs). Individual impacts of PAMPs on immune system have been
evaluated, but simultaneous actions of multiple PAMPs have not been
studied. Objective: Examination the effects of cyclic dinucleotides and Porphyromonas gingivalis
LPS on gingival epithelial cytokine response. Methods: Human gingival
keratinocytes (HMK) were incubated with 1, 10, and 100 µM concentrations
of c-di-GMP and c-di-AMP, either in the presence or absence of P. gingivalis
LPS. Intra- and extracellular levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8,
IL-1Ra, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, and vascular
endothelial growth factor (VEGF), were measured using the Luminex
technique. Results: LPS decreased extracellular IL-8 levels, while the
presence of c-di-AMP inhibited this effect. Incubating HMK cells with
c-di-AMP (alone or with LPS) elevated the extracellular level of MCP-1.
Extracellular VEGF level increased when cells were incubated with LPS
and c-di-GMP together, or with c-di-AMP alone. LPS and c-di-AMP
suppressed intracellular IL-1β levels. The c-di-AMP elevated
intracellular levels of IL-1Ra. Conclusion: c-di-AMP and, to a lesser
extent, c-di-GMP regulate keratinocyte cytokine response, either as an
aggregator or as a suppressor of LPS, depending on the cytokine type.</p
Bulk spectral function sum rule in QCD-like theories with a holographic dual
We derive the sum rule for the spectral function of the stress-energy tensor
in the bulk (uniform dilatation) channel in a general class of strongly coupled
field theories. This class includes theories holographically dual to a theory
of gravity coupled to a single scalar field, representing the operator of the
scale anomaly. In the limit when the operator becomes marginal, the sum rule
coincides with that in QCD. Using the holographic model, we verify explicitly
the cancellation between large and small frequency contributions to the
spectral integral required to satisfy the sum rule in such QCD-like theories.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
Thermodynamics of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories in 2+1 dimensions II - The deconfined phase
We present a non-perturbative study of the equation of state in the
deconfined phase of Yang-Mills theories in D=2+1 dimensions. We introduce a
holographic model, based on the improved holographic QCD model, from which we
derive a non-trivial relation between the order of the deconfinement phase
transition and the behavior of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor as a
function of the temperature T. We compare the theoretical predictions of this
holographic model with a new set of high-precision numerical results from
lattice simulations of SU(N) theories with N=2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 colors. The
latter reveal that, similarly to the D=3+1 case, the bulk equilibrium
thermodynamic quantities (pressure, trace of the energy-momentum tensor, energy
density and entropy density) exhibit nearly perfect proportionality to the
number of gluons, and can be successfully compared with the holographic
predictions in a broad range of temperatures. Finally, we also show that, again
similarly to the D=3+1 case, the trace of the energy-momentum tensor appears to
be proportional to T^2 in a wide temperature range, starting from approximately

Thermodynamics of deformed AdS model with a positive/negative quadratic correction in graviton-dilaton system
By solving the Einstein equations of the graviton coupling with a real scalar
dilaton field, we establish a general framework to self-consistently solve the
geometric background with black-hole for any given phenomenological holographic
models. In this framwork, we solve the black-hole background, the corresponding
dilaon field and the dilaton potential for the deformed AdS model with a
positive/negative quadratic correction. We systematically investigate the
thermodynamical properties of the deformed AdS model with a positive and
negative quadratic correction, respectively, and compare with lattice QCD on
the results of the equation of state, the heavy quark potential, the Polyakov
loop and the spatial Wilson loop. We find that the bulk thermodynamical
properties are not sensitive to the sign of the quadratic correction, and the
results of both deformed holographic QCD models agree well with lattice QCD
result for pure SU(3) gauge theory. However, the results from loop operators
favor a positive quadratic correction, which agree well with lattice QCD
result. Especially, the result from the Polyakov loop excludes the model with a
