Nondestructive determination of cohesive strength of adhesive-bonded composites
Systematic plan determines vibration responses and modes of honeycomb composites, correlates vibrational responses of composite specimens varying in strength of cohesive bond, determines effects of thickness variation of the face sheet over the frequency range, optimizes the characteristics of the excitation transducer, and measures bond strength
On the interaction of ultrasound with cracks: Applications to fatigue crack growth
Partial contact of two rough fatigue crack surfaces leads to transmission and diffraction of an acoustic signal at those contacts. Recent experimental and theoretical efforts to understand and quantify such contact in greater detail are discussed. The objective is to develop an understanding of the closure phenomenon and its application to the interpretation of fatigue data, in particular the R-ratio, spike overload/underload and threshold effects on crack propagation
Active controls for ride smoothing
Active controls technology offers great promise for significantly smoothing the ride, and thus improving public and air carrier acceptance, of certain types of transport aircraft. Recent findings which support this promise are presented in the following three pertinent areas: (1) Ride quality versus degree of traveler satisfaction; (2) significant findings from a feasibility study of a ride smoothing system; and (3) potential ride problems identified for several advanced transport concepts
The use of LANDSAT digital data to detect and monitor vegetation water deficiencies
A technique devised using a vector transformation of LANDSAT digital data to indicate when vegetation is undergoing moisture stress is described. A relation established between the remote sensing-based criterion (the Green Index Number) and a ground-based criterion (Crop Moisture Index) is discussed
Highly-improved lattice field-strength tensor
We derive an O(a^4)-improved lattice version of the continuum field-strength
tensor. Discretization errors are reduced via the combination of several clover
terms of various sizes, complemented by tadpole improvement. The resulting
improved field-strength tensor is used to construct O(a^4)-improved topological
charge and action operators. We compare the values attained by these operators
as we cool several configurations to self-duality with a previously defined
highly-improved action and assess the relative scale of the remaining

Magnetic Excitations of the 2-D Sm Spin Layers in Sm(La,Sr)CuO4
We present specific heat and susceptibility data on Sm(La,Sr)CuO4 in magnetic
fields up to 9 T and temperatures down to 100 mK. We find a broad peak in
specific heat which is insensitive to magnetic field at a temperature of 1.5 K
with a value of 2.65 J/mol K. The magnetic susceptibility at 5 T continues to
increase down to 2 K, the lowest temperature measured. The data suggest that
the Sm spin system may be an ideal realization of the frustrated Heisenberg
antiferromagnet on the square lattice.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, submitted to IC
Chasing the second gamma-ray bright isolated neutron star: 3EG J1835+5918/RX J1836.2+5925
The EGRET telescope aboard NASAs Compton GRO has repeatedly detected 3EG
J1835+5918, a bright and steady source of high-energy gamma-ray emission with
no identification suggested until recently. The long absence of any likely
counterpart for a bright gamma-ray source located 25 degrees off the Galactic
plane initiated several attempts of deep observations at other wavelengths. We
report on counterparts in X-rays on a basis of a 60 ksec ROSAT HRI image. In
order to conclude on the plausibility of the X-ray counterparts, we reanalyzed
data from EGRET at energies above 100 MeV and above 1 GeV, including data up to
CGRO observation cycle 7. The gamma-ray source location represents the latest
and probably the final positional assessment based on EGRET data. The X-ray
counterparts were studied during follow-up optical identification campaigns,
leaving only one object to be likely associated with the gamma-ray source 3EG
J1835+5918. This object, RX J1836.2+5925, has the characteristics of an
isolated neutron star and possibly of a radio-quiet pulsar.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. To appear in the Proceedings of the 270.
