    Identification of Long-lived Charged Particles using Time-Of-Flight Systems at the Upgraded LHC detectors

    We study the impact of picosecond precision timing detection systems on the LHC experiments' long-lived particle search program during the HL-LHC era. We develop algorithms that allow us to reconstruct the mass of such charged particles and perform particle identification using the time-of-flight measurement. We investigate the reach for benchmark scenarios as a function of the timing resolution, and find sensitivity improvement of up to a factor of ten, depending on the new heavy particle mass.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figure

    El suplemento infantil Mercurito y su aporte como método didáctico en dos centros educativos de nivel primario en la ciudad de cuenca . La investigación se realizó en las escuelas, San José La Salle y Miguel A. Estrella , la muestra para la investigación de campo se ha tomado de Ciento diez y nueve niños/as de los sextos niveles de educación básica con la colaboración de los docentes y directores de dichos establecimientos. Nuestro estudio en una institución fiscal y una particular, nos permitió lanzar nuevas expectativas acerca del suplemento infantil y su aporte como material didáctico. En la escuela fiscal Miguel Ángel Estrella simplemente es limitado el uso del Mercurito, ya que los alumnos no compran regularmente y el docente no les exige el uso del mismo para sus actividades en clase. El estudio realizado en la escuela San José La Salle demuestra un detalle importante que el suplemento Mercurito es la fuente de consulta o material didáctico de los alumnos que cursan el sexto y séptimo de básica, y lo utilizan desde el primer día de clase. Los docentes y padres de familia de ambas instituciones concuerdan que es un gran aporte cultural que brinda los medios de comunicación con la publicación de estos suplementos que sirven de guía para sus hijos y que le permite al profesor ampliar los conocimientos de los alumnos con elementos sencillos como es la lectura compresiva, el análisis del texto, en síntesis el niño aprende jugandoLicenciatura en Comunicación SocialCuenc

    MULTI-INSTRUMENTAL IDENTIFICATION OF ORPIMENT IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MORTUARY CONTEXTS

    Indexación: Web of Science; Scielo.This paper reports on an unknown yellowish mineral compound found in an archaeological context from Chorrillos cemetery (Calama, Chile) dating to the Early Formative period (800 - 200 B.C.). We used optic microscopy, SEM, EDX, 1H-RMN, 13C-RMN, and infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy to tease out the chemical and molecular composition of the sample. The microscopic images show amorphous yellowish granulates with heterogeneous chemical surfaces. 1H-RMN and 13C-RMN negative results show that the sample is free of organic matter. The SEM and EDX indicate the presence of arsenic and sulfur in the sample. The IR and Raman analyses suggest the presence of orpiment which is a toxic yellow arsenic sulfide mineral.http://ref.scielo.org/mfcms

    High-grade cervical dysplasia in pregnancy – psychological and medical challenges

    Despite being rare, the incidence of pregnancy-related cancer is expected to rise as women continue to delay childbearing and give birth later in their reproductive years. In this broad category, tumors like breast cancer, dermatological neoplasia and cervical cancer are most common and tend to arise in women of childbearing age. All pregnant women with clinical and cytologic suspicion of cervical cancer, except for squamous atypia or low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, should undergo colposcopy, with or without biopsy, the latter being avoided if possible due to possible complications which, although rare, may involve preterm labor initiation. Some studies have attempted to assimilate comparable results of USG with MRI during the gestational period by determining the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS) in comparison to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In order to identify the proper way to diagnose and treat the disease, because of the complexity due to pregnancy, a multidisciplinary team consisting of a gynecologist, medical and surgical oncologist, and radiologist should be assembled. Both maternal and fetal wellbeing should be taken into consideration when the medical team must choose among termination of pregnancy, delay of maternal treatment, and iatrogenic preterm delivery. Psychological counseling also plays an important role and due to the sensitivity of the issue, should continue through gestation and the postpartum. In order to develop optimal guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, and outcome issues, large scale prospective studies are needed, but feasibility may be limited due to the scarcity of cervical cancer cases associated with pregnancy

    The title compound, C26H28O3Si, is an allylic oxidation product of the tert-but­yl(2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro­benzo­furan-7-yl­oxy)diphenyl­silane with N-bromo­succinimide and 2,2′-azobis-isobutyronitrile. The nine-atom bicyclic system is almost planar, with an r.m.s deviation of 0.0123 (2) Å and a maximum deviation of 0.031 (2) Å for the O atom. In the crystal, the mol­ecules pile up along the b axis but the strongest inter­molecular contacts are the π–π stacking inter­actions between the benzene rings along the c axis [centroid–centroid distance = 3.655 (3) Å]

    Lagrangian filtered density function for LES-based stochastic modelling of turbulent dispersed flows

    The Eulerian-Lagrangian approach based on Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) is one of the most promising and viable numerical tools to study turbulent dispersed flows when the computational cost of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) becomes too expensive. The applicability of this approach is however limited if the effects of the Sub-Grid Scales (SGS) of the flow on particle dynamics are neglected. In this paper, we propose to take these effects into account by means of a Lagrangian stochastic SGS model for the equations of particle motion. The model extends to particle-laden flows the velocity-filtered density function method originally developed for reactive flows. The underlying filtered density function is simulated through a Lagrangian Monte Carlo procedure that solves for a set of Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) along individual particle trajectories. The resulting model is tested for the reference case of turbulent channel flow, using a hybrid algorithm in which the fluid velocity field is provided by LES and then used to advance the SDEs in time. The model consistency is assessed in the limit of particles with zero inertia, when "duplicate fields" are available from both the Eulerian LES and the Lagrangian tracking. Tests with inertial particles were performed to examine the capability of the model to capture particle preferential concentration and near-wall segregation. Upon comparison with DNS-based statistics, our results show improved accuracy and considerably reduced errors with respect to the case in which no SGS model is used in the equations of particle motion

    Phonon-Assisted Andreev Reflection at Majorana Zero Mode

    One of the typical features of Majorana zero mode (MZM) at the end of topological superconductor is a zero-bias peak in the tunneling spectroscopy of the normal lead-superconductor junction. In this paper we study on a model with one phonon mode coupling to the superconductor lead of the normal lead-superconductor junction, which can be viewed as an electron-lead/phonon-coupled-MZM/hole-lead structure. The phonon-coupled MZM acts as a series of channels in which electron can turn into hole by absorbing and emitting phonons. These channels present in the local density of states (LDOS) as a series of stripes, generating the corresponding peaks in the tunneling spectroscopy. In LDOS, the electron-phonon interaction narrows and redistributes the weight among stripes. In the tunneling spectroscopy, the heights of peaks present a feature of the multi-phonon process. With these investigations, our work illuminates the mechanism of phonon-assisted Andreev reflection at a Majorana zero mode.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Quality of Reporting in Preclinical Urethral Tissue Engineering Studies:A Systematic Review to Assess Adherence to the ARRIVE Guidelines

    SIMPLE SUMMARY: We have conducted a systematic review to investigate the quality of reporting in preclinical experiments exploring tissue engineering approaches for urethral repair. This was performed based on the Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE) guidelines in a total of 28 articles from 2014 to 2020. Inadequate reporting of the essential points of research experiments was observed that could remarkably affect clarity, reproducibility, and translatability. A complete statement of the ethical review permission and guidelines followed was missing in 54% of the studies. Details to ensure reproducibility of the studies, such as animal housing, husbandry, and anesthetics, were infrequently reported. No paper stated the sample size estimation methodology. The quality of reporting improved marginally over the study period. We encourage the utilization of the ARRIVE checklist items when reporting preclinical studies to help the publication of manuscripts that would allow a precise judgment of their scientific merit. ABSTRACT: Preclinical research within the area of urethral tissue engineering has not yet been successfully translated into an efficient therapeutic option for patients. This gap could be attributed, in part, to inadequate design and reporting of the studies employing laboratory animals. In this study, a systematic review was conducted to investigate the quality of reporting in preclinical studies utilizing tissue engineering approaches for urethral repair. The scope was on studies performed in rabbits, published between January 2014 and March 2020. Quality assessment of the data was conducted according to the Animal Research: Reporting of in Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE) guidelines by the scoring of a 38-item checklist in different categories. A total of 28 articles that fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included in the study. The range of ARRIVE score was from 0 to 100, taking into consideration having reported the item in question or not. The mean checklist score was 53%. The items that attained the highest scores included the number of animals utilized, the size of control and experimental groups, and the definition of experimental outcomes. The least frequently reported items included the data regarding the experimental procedure, housing and husbandry, determination and justification of the number of animals, and reporting of adverse events. Surprisingly, full disclosure about ethical guidelines and animal protocol approval was missing in 54% of the studies. No paper stated the sample size estimation. Overall, our study found that a large number of studies display inadequate reporting of fundamental information and that the quality of reporting improved marginally over the study period. We encourage a comprehensive implementation of the ARRIVE guidelines in animal studies exploring tissue engineering for urethral repair, not only to facilitate effective translation of preclinical research findings into clinical therapies, but also to ensure compliance with ethical principles and to minimize unnecessary animal studies

    In-Vitro Sorbent-Mediated Removal of Edoxaban from Human Plasma and Albumin Solution

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Based on previous experience of sorbent-mediated ticagrelor, dabigatran, and radiocontrast agent removal, we set out in this study to test the effect of two sorbents on the removal of edoxaban, a factor Xa antagonist direct oral anticoagulant. METHODS: We circulated 100 mL of edoxaban solution during six first-pass cycles through 40-mL sorbent columns (containing either CytoSorb in three passes or Porapak Q 50-80 mesh in the remaining three passes) during experiments using human plasma and 4% bovine serum albumin solution as drug vehicles. Drug concentration was measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. RESULTS: Edoxaban concentration in two experiments performed with human plasma dropped from 276.8 to 2.7 ng/mL and undetectable concentrations, respectively, with CytoSorb or Porapak Q 50-80 mesh (p = 0.0031). The average edoxaban concentration decreased from 407 ng/mL +/- 216 ng/mL to 3.3 ng/mL +/- 7 ng/mL (p = 0.017), for a removal rate of 99% across all six samples of human plasma (two samples) and bovine serum albumin solution (four samples). In four out of the six adsorbed samples, the drug concentrations were undetectable. CONCLUSION: Sorbent-mediated technology may represent a viable pathway for edoxaban removal from human plasma or albumin solution
