Dimensional Reduction, Hard Thermal Loops and the Renormalization Group
We study the realization of dimensional reduction and the validity of the
hard thermal loop expansion for lambda phi^4 theory at finite temperature,
using an environmentally friendly finite-temperature renormalization group with
a fiducial temperature as flow parameter. The one-loop renormalization group
allows for a consistent description of the system at low and high temperatures,
and in particular of the phase transition. The main results are that
dimensional reduction applies, apart from a range of temperatures around the
phase transition, at high temperatures (compared to the zero temperature mass)
only for sufficiently small coupling constants, while the HTL expansion is
valid below (and rather far from) the phase transition, and, again, at high
temperatures only in the case of sufficiently small coupling constants. We
emphasize that close to the critical temperature, physics is completely
dominated by thermal fluctuations that are not resummed in the hard thermal
loop approach and where universal quantities are independent of the parameters

Short gamma-ray bursts within 200 Mpc
We present a systematic search for short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the local Universe based on 14 yr of observations with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We cross-correlate the GRB positions with the GLADE catalogue of nearby galaxies, and find no event at a distance ≲100 Mpc and four plausible candidates in the range 100 Mpc ≲ D ≲ 200 Mpc. Although affected by low statistics, this number is higher than the one expected for chance alignments to random galaxies, and possibly suggests a physical association between these bursts and nearby galaxies. By assuming a local origin, we use these events to constrain the range of properties for X-ray counterparts of neutron star mergers. Optical upper limits place tight constraints on the onset of a blue kilonova, and imply either low masses (≲10−3M⊙) of lanthanide-poor ejecta or unfavorable orientations (θ_(obs) ≳ 30 deg). Finally, we derive that the all-sky rate of detectable short GRBs within 200 Mpc is 1.3^(+1.7)_(−0.8) yr⁻¹ (68 per cent confidence interval), and discuss the implications for the GRB outflow structure. If these candidates are instead of cosmological origin, we set a upper limit of ≲2.0 yr⁻¹ (90 per cent confidence interval) to the rate of nearby events detectable with operating gamma-ray observatories, such as Swift and Fermi
The Físchlár digital video system: a digital library of broadcast TV programmes
Físchlár is a system for recording, indexing, browsing and playback of broadcast TV programmes which has been operational on our University campus for almost 18 months. In this paper we give a brief overview of how the system operates, how TV programmes are organised for browse/playback and a short report on the system usage by over 900 users in our University
Working with and for social enterprises: the role of the volunteer ethnographer
Purpose – This paper considers the specific opportunities and challenges of engaging in ethnographic research with organisations in which the researcher participates as a volunteer ethnographer. Design/methodology/approach – The findings in this paper are based on four years of ethnographic research within a social enterprise. Findings – This paper finds that there are significant benefits of the role of the volunteer ethnographer and suggests ways to address some of the challenges. Research limitations/implications – As the field of social enterprise and ethnography grows and researchers engage with methodological discussions about participant observation, the authors suggest that attention should also be paid to the specifics of the role of the volunteer ethnographer. Originality/value – There is growing interest in the use of ethnography in social enterprises. This paper offers unique insight into how this methodology has been applied in the context of self-reliant groups and the importance of the engaging with discussion about the specific role of the volunteer ethnographer
Operationalization, implications and correlates of the cultural deviance criterion for ICD-11 and DSM-5 prolonged grief disorder
Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is included in ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR and includes a requirement of cultural deviance. This study examined endorsement rates and factors associated with endorsement of this criterion among Danish bereaved spouses (n = 425) and their adult children (n = 159) four years post-loss. In total, 7.5% (n = 44) participants endorsed this criterion. Both including and excluding the criterion, the prevalence rates for probable DSM-5-TR PGD were 1.4% (n = 8) and 1.7% (n = 10), respectively and for probable ICD-11 PGD were 1.4% (n = 8) and 2.2% (n = 13), respectively. Age and gender of the deceased, age of the bereaved, greater grief severity, and comorbid psychopathology were positively associated with endorsement of the criterion. Findings demonstrate low endorsement of the cultural deviation criterion, that its inclusion excludes several potential PGD cases, and unanticipated associations with several factors raise questions about the criterion’s validity
'Mindless markers of the nation': The routine flagging of nationhood across the visual environment
The visual environment has increasingly been used as a lens with which to understand wider processes of social and economic change with studies employing in-depth qualitative approaches to focus on, for example, gentrification or trans-national networks. This exploratory paper offers an alternative perspective by using a novel method, quantitative photo mapping, to examine the extent to which a particular socio-cultural marker, the nation, is ‘flagged’ across three contrasting sites in Britain. As a multi-national state with an increasingly diverse population, Britain offers a particularly fruitful case study, drawing in debates around devolution, European integration and Commonwealth migration. In contributing to wider debates around banal nationalism, the paper notes the extent to which nations are increasingly articulated through commerce, consumption and market exchange and the overall significance of everyday markers (signs, objects, infrastructure) in naturalising a national view of the world
Electrical Properties of High-k Oxide in Pd/Al2O3/InGaAs Stack
The paper presents the results of capacitance-voltage (C-V) characterization of metal-oxidesemiconductor
(MOS) structure, namely Pd/Al2O3/ In0.53Ga0.47As/InP. It is shown that MOS structure under
study exhibit both electron and hole trapping with permanent and temporary charge trapping contributions.
The interfacial transition layer between the high-k oxide and InGaAs has the greatest influence on
this charge trapping phenomenon.

Atomistic modeling of amorphous silicon carbide: An approximate first-principles study in constrained solution space
Localized basis ab initio molecular dynamics simulation within the density
functional framework has been used to generate realistic configurations of
amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC). Our approach consists of constructing a set
of smart initial configurations that conform essential geometrical and
structural aspects of the materials obtained from experimental data, which is
subsequently driven via first-principles force-field to obtain the best
solution in a reduced solution space. A combination of a priori information
(primarily structural and topological) along with the ab-initio optimization of
the total energy makes it possible to model large system size (1000 atoms)
without compromising the quantum mechanical accuracy of the force-field to
describe the complex bonding chemistry of Si and C. The structural, electronic
and the vibrational properties of the models have been studied and compared to
existing theoretical models and available data from experiments. We demonstrate
that the approach is capable of producing large, realistic configurations of
a-SiC from first-principles simulation that display excellent structural and
electronic properties of a-SiC. Our study reveals the presence of predominant
short-range order in the material originating from heteronuclear Si-C bonds
with coordination defect concentration as small as 5% and the chemical disorder
