    CULTURAL AVOIDANCE SCALE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING: VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY STUDY

    The purpose of this study is to develop a scale to measure the level of avoidance of foreign language learners towards the target culture. The study group consisted of 500 freshmen at Atatürk University who study in education, science, social and health sciences. In the study, an item pool consisting of 69 questions was prepared as a data collection tool. The face validity of the scale was done with the researchers and 3 specialist academicians teaching foreign languages, the items that were repeated and difficult to understand were eliminated, and some items were changed in terms of language and expression, and a form consisting of 39 questions was reached. After the opinions of experts were taken in line with the content validity, a draft scale of 28 questions was applied to the study group by eliminating 11 items. The data obtained from the study were analyzed by item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis methods. At the end of the study, it was understood that the Cultural Avoidance Scale in Foreign Language Learning consisting of 28 items was a reliable and valid scale.  Article visualizations

    Konu Jigsawı (Birleştirme) Tekniğinin Ortaokul Yedinci Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Başarı ve Problem Çözme Becerilerine Etkisi

    The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the subject jigsaw technique on elementary school seventh grade students’ academic achievements and on their problem solving skills. The study was carried out on the basis of a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. The study group made up of control and experimental groups of 16 students in each included a total of 32 students. The research data were collected with the Narration Types Achievement Test, Problem Solving Inventory for Children and Student Interview Form for Process. Predictive statistics for the analysis of the quantitative data and the descriptive analysis technique for the qualitative data were applied. The results revealed a significant difference both in the experimental and control groups in terms of achievement before the application. On the other hand, with respect to problem solving skills, only in the experimental group was a significant difference found.Bu araştırmanın amacı konu jigsawı tekniğinin ortaokul yedinci sınıf öğrencilerinin başarı ve problem çözme becerilerine etkisini incelemektir. Çalışmada ön test – son test kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desene göre düzenlenmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu deney ve kontrol grubunun her ikisinde de 16 öğrenci bulunmak üzere toplam 32 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri Anlatım Biçimleri Başarı Testi, Çocuklar İçin Problem Çözme Envanteri ve Süreçle İlgili Öğrenci Görüşme Formu ile toplanmıştır. Nicel verilerin analizinde kestirimsel istatistik, nitel verilerin analizinde ise betimsel analiz tekniği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonunda başarı açısından hem deney hem de kontrol grubunda uygulama öncesine göre anlamlı bir fark tespit edilirken problem çözme becerileri açısından yalnızca deney grubunda anlamlı bir farkın ortaya çıktığı belirlenmiştir

    AbstractThe aim of this study is to determine the attitudes of pre-service teachers of Turkish language towards creative drama course and to make some suggestions in this context. Descriptive method, which is among qualitative research methods, is used in this study. The data was obtained from 3rd grade pre-service teachers of Turkish language from Turkish language teaching department of Kazım Karabekir Faculty of education at Atatürk University. “Attitude scale for creative drama course”, developed by Adıgüzel (2006) is used as data collection instrument. Standard deviation and mean, which are of descriptive statistical methods, are used for data analysis. As the result of the study, the attitudes of pre-service teachers of Turkish language were found to be positive and at an average level

    The effect of worksheets based upon 5e learning cycle model on student success in teaching of adjectives as grammatical components

    AbstractThis study aims to determine the effect of the worksheet which is prepared after 5E learning cycle model concerning the teaching of the subject of adjectives as grammatical components on the success of the student. Combined research method where quantitative and qualitative research patterns are used in conjunction. Semi-experimental pattern with pretest-endtest control group was used for the quantitative aspect of the study for the qualitative aspect of which phenomenology pattern was used. Control group of the study consists of 56 sixth-grade students from Erzurum 23rd July Primary School in the educational year of 2010-2011. Data of the study were obtained using the success test prepared for the subject of adjectives and the interview form questioning the students’ opinion on the work process. While predictive statistical tests were used in the analysis of quantitative data, content analysis technique was used to analyze the qualitative data. In conclusion of the study, it was understood that the worksheets prepared according to 5E learning cycle model increased student's success, that the students preferred the lessons performed with worksheets prepared according to 5E learning cycle model and they were not bored in these lessons

    DergiPark: 961501tredBu çalışmada Uygur Dönemi destanlarından Göç Destanı, kahramanın yolculuğu bağlamında kişiler dünyası açısından incelenmiştir. Göç Destanı Türeyiş Destanı’nın bir uzantısı gibidir. Çin ve İran kaynaklarından edinilen bilgilere göre iki farklı söyleyişi vardır. Çin kaynaklarına göre destanın başında, Buğu Kağan’ın doğumu ve tahta gelişi anlatılır. Destanın olay örgüsünün anlatıldığı bölümün başkahramanı Galı Tekin’dir. Galı Tekin’in bir Çin prensesi ile evlenmesi ve Çinlilerin hain planlarını uygulamaya koymaları, Uygurların yerini yurdunu bırakıp göçmesine zemin hazırlar. Çalışmada Galı Tekin’in Çin prensesi ile evlenmesi ile başlayan ve ölümü ile son bulan yolculuğu, Christopher Vogler’in (2019) Yazarın Yolculuğu adlı eserinde kullandığı yolculuğun aşamalarından hareketle incelenmiş ve kişiler dünyası yorumlanmıştır. Destan metni belirlenen başlıklar düzleminde analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yaklaşımı benimsenmiştir. Çalışmanın birinci bölümü olan yolculuğun aşamalarında belge inceleme, ikinci bölümünde ele alınan kişiler dünyasında ise olgu bilim yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda Vogler’in belirlediği aşamalarla Göç Destanı’nın anlatı seyrinin uygunluğu görülmüştür. Vogler’in teorisinin Türk halk anlatılarına uygunluğunu ve geçerliğini iddia etmek için bu alanda çok daha fazla metin üzerinde çalışmaya ihtiyaç vardır

    Bu çalışmanın amacı "konuşmadan önce dinle" etkinliklerinin ortaokul 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin konuşma ve dinleme becerileri üzerindeki etkilerini incelemektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda "konuşmadan önce dinle" başlığı altında oluşturulan etkinlikler 60 altıncı sınıf öğrencisine uygulanmıştır ve bu uygulama dört hafta devam etmiştir. Çalışma ön-son test tek gruplu yarı deneysel desen modelinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın verileri Etkili Konuşma Ölçeği ve Dinleme Stilleri Anketi aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde ise basit ve kestirimsel istatistiki yöntemler kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonunda, sınıf içinde uygulanan "konuşmadan önce dinle" etkinliklerinin öğrencilerin dinlemeye yönelik tutumlarını olumlu yönde artırdığı ve etkili konuşma yapabilme becerilerini geliştirdiği tespit edilmiştir.The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of activities -titled listen before speaking- on secondary school 6th grade students' speaking and listening skills. In accordance with this purpose, the activities formed under the title of -listen before speaking- were applied to 60 6th grade students and this application continued for four weeks. The study was conducted in the pre-post test with single-control group design of quasi-experimental research model. The data of this study was attained by means of Listening Style Inventory and Effective Speech Scale. The simple and predictive statistical methods were used for analyzing the obtained data. At the end of this study, it has been found out that listen before speaking activities applied in the classrooms have affected positively the students' attitudes towards listening and improved their effective speaking abilities

    Cognitive Constructs of Teacher Candidates on Ideal Qualifications of Academicians

    The aim of the study is to analyze the cognitive construct of teacher candidates on ideal qualifications of academicians. Since the study has both quantitative and qualitative dimensions, it has been conducted in accordance with the exploratory sequential design which is a kind of mixed method. The study included twenty-four teacher candidates who were studying at different departments, at Kazım Karabekir Faculty of Education, Atatürk University during 2019-2020 spring semester. Since the cognitive constructs of teacher candidates on ideal qualifications of academicians were questioned, the repertory grid method was used for data collection. Data obtained in the study were analyzedwith quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques. In conclusion, many cognitive constructs regarding academicians were obtained. The frequency of referring to cognitive constructs showed that teacher candidates expect academicians to have the values such as respect, justice, democracy, and impartiality, to be sympathetic, sincere, tolerant, humanist, and reliable in their relations, to attach importance to several features such as being disciplined, well-informed, being effective instructors, researchers, and being up-to-date while fulfilling their duties
