    Estimating the impact of variable renewable energy on base-load cycling in the GB power system

    Between 2009 and 2017 the share of wind and solar energy sources in the GB electricity generation mix increased from 2.5% to 17%. Due to the variable nature of these renewable sources, large thermal power stations designed for constant base-load operation have been required to operate more flexibly to compensate for fluctuations in renewable generation. This flexible operation results in increased thermal stress and reduced efficiency causing increased operation, maintenance and fuel costs for these assets. In this paper we present the results of what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first empirical study on the impact of renewables generation on startups, ramping and part-loading (collectively, ‘cycling’) of base-load generators. We develop regression models using half-hourly generation data from 2009 to 2017 that capture the impact of increased renewable penetration while taking into account confounding factors including seasonality and demand. We find that with 2009-levels of renewable generation, cycling in 2017 would have been less severe, with 20% fewer startups. We also present estimates for cycling under National Grid Future Energy Scenarios to 2030 with implications for investment in generation assets.     From neurons to epidemics: How trophic coherence affects spreading processes

    Trophic coherence, a measure of the extent to which the nodes of a directed network are organised in levels, has recently been shown to be closely related to many structural and dynamical aspects of complex systems, including graph eigenspectra, the prevalence or absence of feed-back cycles, and linear stability. Furthermore, non-trivial trophic structures have been observed in networks of neurons, species, genes, metabolites, cellular signalling, concatenated words, P2P users, and world trade. Here we consider two simple yet apparently quite different dynamical models -- one a Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic model adapted to include complex contagion, the other an Amari-Hopfield neural network -- and show that in both cases the related spreading processes are modulated in similar ways by the trophic coherence of the underlying networks. To do this, we propose a network assembly model which can generate structures with tunable trophic coherence, limiting in either perfectly stratified networks or random graphs. We find that trophic coherence can exert a qualitative change in spreading behaviour, determining whether a pulse of activity will percolate through the entire network or remain confined to a subset of nodes, and whether such activity will quickly die out or endure indefinitely. These results could be important for our understanding of phenomena such as epidemics, rumours, shocks to ecosystems, neuronal avalanches, and many other spreading processes

    The Impact of Parental Income and Education on the Schooling of their Children

    This paper addresses the intergenerational transmission of education and investigates the extent to which early school leaving (at age 16) may be due to variations in parental background. An important contribution of the paper is to distinguish between the causal effects of parental income and parental education levels. Least squares estimation reveals conventional results - weak effects of income (when the child is 16), stronger effects of maternal education than paternal, and stronger effects on sons than daughters. We find that the education effects remain significant even when household income is included. However, when we use instrumental variable methods to simultaneously account for the endogeneity of parental education and paternal income, only maternal education remains significant (for daughters only) and becomes stronger. These estimates are consistent to various set of instruments. The impact of paternal income varies between specifications but become insignificant in our preferred specification. Our results provide limited evidence that policies alleviating income constraints at age 16 can alter schooling decisions but that policies increasing permanent income would lead to increased participation (especially for daughters). There is also evidence of intergenerational transmissions of education choice from mothers to daughters

    A direct comparison of 2D versus 3D diffusion analysis at nanowire electrodes: A finite element analysis and experimental study

    In electroanalysis, the benefits accrued by miniaturisation are a key driver in sensor development. Finite element simulations of electrochemical processes occurring at ultramicro- and nano-electrodes are used to provide key insight into experimental design in relation to diffusion profiles and expected currents. The most commonly used method, the diffusion domain approach (DDA) offers a means of reducing a three dimensional design to two dimensions to ease computational demands. However, the DDA approach can be limited when using basic assumptions which can be incorrect, for example that all electrodes in an array are equivalent. Consequently, to get a more realistic view of molecular diffusion to nanoelectrodes, it is necessary to undertake simulations in 3D. In this work, two and three dimensional models of electrodes comprising of (i) single nanowires, (ii) arrays of nanowires and (iii) interdigitated arrays of nanowires operating in generator-collector mode, were undertaken and compared to experimental results obtained from fabricated devices. The 3D simulations predicted a higher extracted current for a single nanowires and diffusionally independent nanowire arrays when compared to 2D simulations since, unlike the 2D model, they take into account molecular diffusion to and from nanowire termini. These current differences were observed to increase with increasing electrode width and decrease with electrode length. When the nanowire arrays were diffusionally overlapped, they behaved as an electrode of larger width, and the divergence between both models increased further. By contrast, using interdigitated nanowire arrays in generator-collector mode, the differences between extracted current values obtained using the 2D and 3D models were significantly lower. Simulations indicated however, that a higher collection efficiency was predicted by the 2D model when compared to the 3D model. Electrochemical experiments were undertaken to confirm the simulation study and demonstrated that the extracted currents from 3D simulations more closely mapped onto experimentally measured currents

    Effect of early sowing on the growth, yield and quality of sugar beet.

    End of Project ReportExperiments have shown that yield of sugar is closely related to the amount of solar radiation intercepted by a sugar beet crop. Early sowing increases leaf area from May onwards when radiation is at its maximum and provides a basis for increasing yields. In the past, bolting has been an undesirable consequence of early sowing but some modern cultivars have good bolting resistance and can be sown early with a limited risk of bolting. This study, conducted from 1994 to 1998, compared the performance of two cultivars, Celt and Monofeb, at three sowing dates and three harvest dates. In replicated experiments, plant establishment, crop development, and root yield and quality were assessed. The effect of sowing date on solar radiation interception was studied. Effects of in-furrow pesticide application on pest numbers and plant damage were also measured. Plant establishment was influenced by sowing date with the early sowings generally giving lower plant numbers than the later ones. The cultivar Celt produced higher populations than Monofeb at all sowing dates. Early sowing increased the leaf area index (a measure of the ratio of leaf to land area) and consequently the amount of solar radiation intercepted. This was particularly so in June when solar radiation levels are highest. Early crop establishment provides the opportunity to exploit good weather conditions which may occur in April or May. Pest numbers generally were small at all the sites. Insecticide had a greater effect on pest numbers and plant damage than it had on plant establishment; the beneficial effects of pesticide were slightly more pronounced for the early and mid-season sowings than for later-sown beet. Seedling diseases were not a problem at any time of sowing. Poor emergence, where it occurred, was not associated with pre-emergence disease. Early to mid-March sowings produced significantly higher yields of roots and sugar than the early or late April sowings over the period of the experiment. Even in years when plant populations from the first sowings were much lower than subsequent sowings, yields tended to be at least equal to those of later sowings. Monofeb produced a slightly higher root yield than Celt, but because it had lower sugar contents there was no difference in sugar yields. Harvesting extended over the period from early October to mid-November and root growth and sugar production increased over that period irrespective of sowing date. In summary, the overall evaluation of the UK Pilot has demonstrated that key parameters of test and programme performance observed in randomised studies of FOBt screening can be repeated in population-based pilot programmes. However, our study provides strong evidence of very low CRC screening uptake for ethnic groups in the Pilot area. This is coupled with a very low uptake of colonoscopy for individuals from ethnic groups with a positive FOBt result. 28. It has long been acknowledged that a diverse population may require diverse responses. Following the implementation of the Race Relations Amendment Act 2000, there has been a statutory duty laid upon all NHS agencies to ‘have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination’, and to make explicit consideration of the implications for racial equality of every action or policy. 29. Because the observed overall outcomes in the UK Pilot generally compare favourably with the results of previous randomised trials of FOBt screening, the main Evaluation Group has concluded that benefits observed in the trials should be repeatable in a national roll-out. 30. However, our study indicates that any national colorectal cancer screening programme would need to very carefully consider the implications of ethnicity for roll-out, and develop a strategic plan on how best to accommodate this at both a national and local level. Based on our findings, consideration will clearly need to be given to improved access and screening service provision for ethnic minorities. 31. In order to ensure adequate CRC screening provision for a diverse UK population, and to address the explicit implications for racial equality highlighted by our findings, interventions now urgently need to be evaluated to improve access for ethnic minorities. This work should be undertaken as part of the second round of CRC screening currently underway in the English Pilot

    Diversity in the stellar velocity dispersion profiles of a large sample of Brightest Cluster Galaxies z0.3z\leq0.3

    We analyse spatially-resolved deep optical spectroscopy of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) located in 32 massive clusters with redshifts of 0.05 z\leq z \leq 0.30, to investigate their velocity dispersion profiles. We compare these measurements to those of other massive early-type galaxies, as well as central group galaxies, where relevant. This unique, large sample extends to the most extreme of massive galaxies, spanning MK_{K} between -25.7 to -27.8 mag, and host cluster halo mass M500_{500} up to 1.7 ×\times 1015^{15} M_{\odot}. To compare the kinematic properties between brightest group and cluster members, we analyse similar spatially-resolved long-slit spectroscopy for 23 nearby Brightest Group Galaxies (BGGs) from the Complete Local-Volume Groups Sample (CLoGS). We find a surprisingly large variety in velocity dispersion slopes for BCGs, with a significantly larger fraction of positive slopes, unique compared to other (non-central) early-type galaxies as well as the majority of the brightest members of the groups. We find that the velocity dispersion slopes of the BCGs and BGGs correlate with the luminosity of the galaxies, and we quantify this correlation.
