Improved self-gain in deep submicrometer strained silicon-germanium pMOSFETs with HfSiOx/TiSiN gate stacks
The self-gain of surface channel compressively strained SiGe pMOSFETs with HfSiOx/TiSiN gate stacks is investigated for a range of gate lengths down to 55 nm. There is 125% and 700% enhancement in the self-gain of SiGe pMOSFETs compared with the Si control at 100 nm and 55 nm lithographic gate lengths, respectively. This improvement in the self-gain of the SiGe devices is due to 80% hole mobility enhancement compared with the Si control and improved electrostatic integrity in the SiGe devices due to less boron diffusion into the channel. At 55 nm gate length, the SiGe pMOSFETs show 50% less drain induced barrier lowering compared with the Si control devices. Electrical measurements show that the SiGe devices have larger effective channel lengths. It is shown that the enhancement in the self-gain of the SiGe devices compared with the Si control increases as the gate length is reduced thereby making SiGe pMOSFETs with HfSiOx/TiSiN gate stacks an excellent candidate for analog/mixed-signal applications
Longevity and mortality in Kennel Club registered dog breeds in the UK in 2014
Abstract Background The domestic dog is one of the most diverse mammalian species, exhibiting wide variations in morphology, behaviour and morbidity across breeds. Therefore, it is not unexpected that breeds should also exhibit variation in mortality and longevity. While shorter longevity per se may not necessarily be a welfare issue, a generally foreshortened lifespan in a breed that is accompanied by a high prevalence of a particular cause of death may reveal potentially serious welfare concerns and highlight scope to improve breed welfare. Survey data gathered directly from owners offer useful insights into canine longevity and mortality that can support the overall evidence base for welfare reforms within breeds. Results Mortality data on 5663 deceased dogs registered with the UK Kennel Club were collected from an owner-based survey. The most commonly reported causes of death were old age (13.8%), unspecified cancer (8.7%) and heart failure (4.9%); with 5.1% of deaths reported as unknown cause. Overall median age at death was 10.33 years (interquartile range: 7.17–12.83 years). Breeds varied widely in median longevity overall from the West Highland Terrier (12.71 years) to the Dobermann Pinscher (7.67 years). There was also wide variation in the prevalence of some common causes of death among breeds, and in median longevity across the causes of death. Conclusion Substantial variation in the median lifespan and the prominent causes of death exists across breeds. This study has identified some breeds with both a low median lifespan and also a high proportional mortality for one or more specific causes of death that should be considered as both potential welfare concerns as well as opportunities for improvement
Large-scale survey to estimate the prevalence of disorders for 192 Kennel Club registered breeds
Abstract Background Pedigree or purebred dogs are often stated to have high prevalence of disorders which are commonly assumed to be a consequence of inbreeding and selection for exaggerated features. However, few studies empirically report and rank the prevalence of disorders across breeds although such data are of critical importance in the prioritisation of multiple health concerns, and to provide a baseline against which to explore changes over time. This paper reports an owner survey that gathered disorder information on Kennel Club registered pedigree dogs, regardless of whether these disorders received veterinary care. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of disorders among pedigree dogs overall and, where possible, determine any variation among breeds. Results This study included morbidity data on 43,005 live dogs registered with the Kennel Club. Just under two thirds of live dogs had no reported diseases/conditions. The most prevalent diseases/conditions overall were lipoma (4.3%; 95% confidence interval 4.13-4.52%), skin (cutaneous) cyst (3.1%; 2.94-3.27%) and hypersensitivity (allergic) skin disorder (2.7%; 2.52-2.82%). For the most common disorders in the most represented breeds, 90 significant differences between the within breed prevalence and the overall prevalence are reported. Conclusion The results from this study have added vital epidemiological data on disorders in UK dogs. It is anticipated that these results will contribute to the forthcoming Breed Health & Conservation Plans, a Kennel Club initiative aiming to assist in the identification and prioritisation of breeding selection objectives for health and provide advice to breeders/owners regarding steps that may be taken to minimise the risk of the disease/disorders. Future breed-specific studies are recommended to report more precise prevalence estimates within more breeds
The impact of self-heating and SiGe strain-relaxed buffer thickness on the analog performance of strained Si nMOSFETs
The impact of the thickness of the silicon–germanium strain-relaxed buffer (SiGe SRB) on the analog performance of strained Si nMOSFETs is investigated. The negative drain conductance caused by self-heating at high power levels leads to negative self-gain which can cause anomalous circuit behavior like non-linear phase shifts. Using AC and DC measurements, it is shown that reducing the SRB thickness improves the analog design space and performance by minimizing self-heating. The range of terminal voltages that leverage positive self-gain in 0.1 μm strained Si MOSFETs fabricated on 425 nm SiGe SRBs is increased by over 100% compared with strained Si devices fabricated on conventional SiGe SRBs 4 μm thick. Strained Si nMOSFETs fabricated on thin SiGe SRBs also show 45% improvement in the self-gain compared with the Si control as well as 25% enhancement in the on-state performance compared with the strained Si nMOSFETs on the 4 μm SiGe SRB. The extracted thermal resistance is 50% lower in the strained Si device on the thin SiGe SRB corresponding to a 30% reduction in the temperature rise compared with the device fabricated on the 4 μm SiGe SRB. Comparisons between the maximum drain voltages for positive self-gain in the strained Si devices and the ITRS projections of supply-voltage scaling show that reducing the thickness of the SiGe SRB would be necessary for future technology nodes
HIV with contact-tracing: a case study in Approximate Bayesian Computation
Missing data is a recurrent issue in epidemiology where the infection process
may be partially observed. Approximate Bayesian Computation, an alternative to
data imputation methods such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo integration, is
proposed for making inference in epidemiological models. It is a
likelihood-free method that relies exclusively on numerical simulations. ABC
consists in computing a distance between simulated and observed summary
statistics and weighting the simulations according to this distance. We propose
an original extension of ABC to path-valued summary statistics, corresponding
to the cumulated number of detections as a function of time. For a standard
compartmental model with Suceptible, Infectious and Recovered individuals
(SIR), we show that the posterior distributions obtained with ABC and MCMC are
similar. In a refined SIR model well-suited to the HIV contact-tracing data in
Cuba, we perform a comparison between ABC with full and binned detection times.
For the Cuban data, we evaluate the efficiency of the detection system and
predict the evolution of the HIV-AIDS disease. In particular, the percentage of
undetected infectious individuals is found to be of the order of 40%
Signalment risk factors for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (Alabama rot) in dogs in the UK
Seasonal outbreaks of cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) have been reported annually in UK dogs since 2012, yet the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to explore whether any breeds had an increased or decreased risk of being diagnosed with CRGV, and to report on age and sex distributions of CRGV cases occurring in the UK. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare 101 dogs diagnosed with CRGV between November 2012 and May 2017 with a denominator population of 446,453 dogs from the VetCompass database. Two Kennel Club breed groups—hounds (odds ratio (OR) 10.68) and gun dogs (OR 9.69)—had the highest risk of being diagnosed with CRGV compared with terriers, while toy dogs were absent from among CRGV cases. Females were more likely to be diagnosed with CRGV (OR 1.51) as were neutered dogs (OR 3.36). As well as helping veterinarians develop an index of suspicion for the disease, better understanding of the signalment risk factors may assist in the development of causal models for CRGV and help identify the aetiology of the disease
An epidemiological study of diabetes mellitus in dogs attending first opinion practice in the UK
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of canine diabetes mellitus (DM) in primary-care clinics in England, to identify risk factors associated with DM and to describe the survival of affected dogs. Cases of DM were identified within the electronic patient records of 89 small-animal practices. A nested case–control study identified risk factors for the diagnosis of DM using logistic regression models. Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyse variables associated with survival. Four-hundred and thirty-nine canine DM cases were identified, giving an apparent prevalence of 0.34% (95% CI 0.31% to 0.37%). Neutered males were at an increased risk of diabetes compared with entire males, whereas neutering was not associated with DM in females. When compared with crossbred dogs, Yorkshire terriers had increased odds, whereas German shepherd dogs and golden retrievers had lower odds of DM. Being classified as overweight and having a diagnosis of pancreatitis, hyperadrenocorticism or a urinary tract infection were positively associated with DM. Older dogs and those diagnosed with pancreatitis had a higher hazard of death, whereas insured and neutered dogs had a lower hazard. This study provides an objective assessment of canine DM using primary-care veterinary practice data and is a valuable benchmark against which future epidemiological trends in DM can be assessed and improvements in the management of DM in primary-care practice can be judged
The Conformal Penrose Limit and the Resolution of the pp-curvature Singularities
We consider the exact solutions of the supergravity theories in various
dimensions in which the space-time has the form M_{d} x S^{D-d} where M_{d} is
an Einstein space admitting a conformal Killing vector and S^{D-d} is a sphere
of an appropriate dimension. We show that, if the cosmological constant of
M_{d} is negative and the conformal Killing vector is space-like, then such
solutions will have a conformal Penrose limit: M^{(0)}_{d} x S^{D-d} where
M^{(0)}_{d} is a generalized d-dimensional AdS plane wave. We study the
properties of the limiting solutions and find that M^{(0)}_{d} has 1/4
supersymmetry as well as a Virasoro symmetry. We also describe how the
pp-curvature singularity of M^{(0)}_{d} is resolved in the particular case of
the D6-branes of D=10 type IIA supergravity theory. This distinguished case
provides an interesting generalization of the plane waves in D=11 supergravity
theory and suggests a duality between the SU(2) gauged d=8 supergravity of
Salam and Sezgin on M^{(0)}_{8} and the d=7 ungauged supergravity theory on its

On discretization in time in simulations of particulate flows
We propose a time discretization scheme for a class of ordinary differential
equations arising in simulations of fluid/particle flows. The scheme is
intended to work robustly in the lubrication regime when the distance between
two particles immersed in the fluid or between a particle and the wall tends to
zero. The idea consists in introducing a small threshold for the particle-wall
distance below which the real trajectory of the particle is replaced by an
approximated one where the distance is kept equal to the threshold value. The
error of this approximation is estimated both theoretically and by numerical
experiments. Our time marching scheme can be easily incorporated into a full
simulation method where the velocity of the fluid is obtained by a numerical
solution to Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations. We also provide a derivation of
the asymptotic expansion for the lubrication force (used in our numerical
experiments) acting on a disk immersed in a Newtonian fluid and approaching the
wall. The method of this derivation is new and can be easily adapted to other
cases
