    Managing Household Waste in Ireland: Behavioural Parameters and Policy Options. ESRI WP295. May 2009

    Ireland has signed up to ambitious targets for diverting municipal solid waste from landfill. These targets are likely to be very difficult to meet without substantial changes to the way household waste is collected and managed. Data on household waste management behaviour in Ireland is scarce, and policymaking could benefit from improved data and market analysis. In this paper we use data from the EPA and CSO to estimate econometric models of household waste collection in Ireland, providing national estimates of income elasticities of demand, price elasticities where unit charges are in place, effects of imposing weight-based charging and effects of other important changes to service characteristics. These results are then used in a simulation model to illustrate the likely effects of some current policy options

    The Edinburgh World Missionary Conference, 1910 has long been regarded as a central event in the history of world missions. A great deal of christological debate had been taking place in the decades prior to Edinburgh 1910. Theologians in Britain, North America and on the continent of Europe had been subjecting the Bible and the person of Christ to unprecedented historical and philosophical scrutiny. Developments within science, particularly the influence of evolution, were used by theologians to explain the action and influence of God in the world and this had profound implications for mission theology since it impacted directly on the issues surrounding the revelation of God in non-Christian faiths and the uniqueness and finality of Christ himself. Many missionaries were falling under the influence of immanentist thought which was changing their own understanding of the value and validity of non-Christian faiths. Fulfilment theology drew on Hegelian influences and evolutionary concepts to construct a theory of religions which viewed Christianity as the fulfilment of other world faiths

    Stress in silicon interlayers at the SiO(x)/Ge interface

    Materials such as germanium display an advantage relative to silicon in terms of carrier mobilities but form poor quality interfaces to oxides. By sandwiching silicon layers between a germanium substrate and the oxide, advantages of the silicon oxide/silicon (SiO(x)/Si) interface can be retained combined with the advantage of a high mobility germanium substrate. Using density functional theory calculations, stress within the silicon interlayer is quantified for different interlayer thicknesses revealing that for up to three silicon layers, the stress in the interlayer is compensated for by the energy gained by forming silicon-oxygen bonds at the interface.     peer-reviewedMilk is a highly nutritious food that contains an array of macro and micro components, scientifically proven to be beneficial to human health. While the composition of milk is influenced by a variety of factors, such as genetics, health, lactation stage etc., the animal’s diet remains a key mechanism by which its nutrition and processing characteristics can be altered. Pasture feeding has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on the nutrient profile of milk, increasing the content of some beneficial nutrients such as Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, vaccenic acid, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), while reducing the levels of Omega-6 fatty acids and palmitic acid. These resultant alterations to the nutritional profile of “Grass-Fed” milk resonate with consumers that desire healthy, “natural”, and sustainable dairy products. This review provides a comprehensive comparison of the impact that pasture and non-pasture feeding systems have on bovine milk composition from a nutritional and functional (processability) perspective, highlighting factors that will be of interest to dairy farmers, processors, and consumers

    peer-reviewedCurrently, nitrogen fertilizers are utilized to meet 48% of the total global food demand. The demand for nitrogen fertilizers is expected to grow as global populations continue to rise. The use of nitrogen fertilizers is associated with many negative environmental impacts and is a key source of greenhouse and harmful gas emissions. In recent years, urease and nitrification inhibitors have emerged as mitigation tools that are presently utilized in agriculture to prevent nitrogen losses and reduce greenhouse and harmful gas emissions that are associated with the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers. Both classes of inhibitor work by different mechanisms and have different physiochemical properties. Consequently, each class must be evaluated on its own merits. Although there are many benefits associated with the use of these inhibitors, little is known about their potential to enter the food chain, an event that may pose challenges to food safety. This phenomenon was highlighted when the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide was found as a residual contaminant in milk products in 2013. This comprehensive review aims to discuss the uses of inhibitor technologies in agriculture and their possible impacts on dairy product safety and quality, highlighting areas of concern with regards to the introduction of these inhibitor technologies into the dairy supply chain.     People with blood cancers have an increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease despite booster vaccine doses.1 This group, like other disease groups at increased risk of severe COVID-19, includes individuals with highly heterogeneous immune responses to vaccination.2 Although vaccine response studies and population studies identify similar diseases and treatments associated with increased risk of severe COVID-19, a direct correlation between antibody levels after vaccination and infection risk has been difficult to define. Identification of a laboratory correlate of infection risk would allow doctors and policy makers to target additional COVID-19 treatment or prophylactic efforts to people who are most in need
