Biomechanical demands differentiate transitioning vs. continuous stair ascent gait in older women
Background Stair ascent mechanics change with age, but little is known about the differing functional demands of transitioning and continuous ascent. Work investigating the risky transition from gait to ascent is sparse, and the strategies that older adults adopt to achieve these demanding tasks have not been investigated. Methods This study compared the biomechanics of a 2-step transitional (floor-to-step2) and continuous ascent cycle (step1-to-step3) and investigated the role of limb preference in relation to dynamometer-derived knee strength during this transition. A biomechanical analysis of 36 women (60–83 years) ascending a 3-step staircase was conducted. Findings The 2-step transitioning cycle was completed quicker, with a larger range of motion, increased forces, larger knee flexor and dorsiflexor moments and ankle powers (P ≤ 0.05), but reduced hip and knee flexion, smaller hip extensor moments and hip and knee powers compared to continuous ascent. During the transition, 44% of the participants demonstrated a consistent limb preference. In these cases large between-limb extensor strength differences existed (13.8%) and 71% of these participants utilised the stronger limb to execute the 2-step transitional cycle. Interpretation The preferential stronger-limb 2-step transitioning strategy conflicts with previous recommendations of a stronger lead limb for frail/asymmetric populations. Our findings suggest that most healthy older women with large between-limb differences utilise the stronger limb to achieve the considerable propulsion required to redirect momentum during the 2-step transition. The biomechanical demands of ascent, relative to limb strength, can inform exercise programmes by targeting specific muscle groups to help older adults maintain/improve general functioning
Universal Properties of Galactic Rotation Curves and a First Principles Derivation of the Tully-Fisher Relation
In a recent paper McGaugh, Lelli, and Schombert showed that in an empirical
plot of the observed centripetal accelerations in spiral galaxies against those
predicted by the Newtonian gravity of the luminous matter in those galaxies the
data points occupied a remarkably narrow band. While one could summarize the
mean properties of the band by drawing a single mean curve through it, by
fitting the band with the illustrative conformal gravity theory with fits that
fill out the width of the band we show here that the width of the band is just
as physically significant. We show that at very low luminous Newtonian
accelerations the plot can become independent of the luminous Newtonian
contribution altogether, but still be non-trivial due to the contribution of
matter outside of the galaxies (viz. the rest of the visible universe). We
present a new empirical plot of the difference between the observed centripetal
accelerations and the luminous Newtonian expectations as a function of distance
from the centers of galaxies, and show that at distances greater than 10 kpc
the plot also occupies a remarkably narrow band, one even close to constant.

A Buffer Stocks Model for Stabilizing Price of Staple Food with Considering the Expectation of Non Speculative Wholesaler
This paper is a study of price stabilization in the
staple food distribution system. All stakeholders experience
market risks due to some possibility causes of price volatility.
Many models of price stabilization had been developed by
employing several approaches such as floor-ceiling prices,
buffer funds, export or import taxes, and subsidies. In the
previous researches, the models were expanded to increase the
purchasing price for producer and decrease the selling price
for consumer. Therefore, the policy can influence the losses for
non-speculative wholesaler that is reflected by the descending
of selling quantity and ascending of the stocks. The objective of
this model is not only to keep the expectation of both producer
and consumer, but also to protect non-speculative wholesaler
from the undesirable result of the stabilization policy. A
nonlinear programming model was addressed to determine the
instruments of intervention program. Moreover, the result
shows that the wholesaler behavior affects the intervention
costs.

Bristol Deaf Memories: archives, nostalgia and the loss of community space in the deaf community in Bristol

The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this record.The deaf community in the UK has undergone major changes in recent years, which has uprooted it from its traditional foundations, the deaf club and deaf residential school. This article examines the effect of the closure of the deaf club in Bristol, a city in the South West of England, which resulted in the loss of an important community place and spaces for deaf people in the city. We discuss, with a strong focus on methodology, a community event celebrating Bristol’s deaf heritage organised by the research team which utilised archive materials, including archived actuality footage, this article draws on interview data elicited from participants in that event to explore the meanings connected to space and place in both past and present by the deaf community in Bristol. Concepts of the rhizome and the smooth and striated spaces of Deleuze and Guattari were found to be useful models with which to engage with the contemporary struggles of the deaf community for community recognition and organisation. We also suggest an online mapping application which enables the practice of rhizomatic cartography could be a way forward in preserving the deaf heritage and history of the city.This research was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, grant number

Mouse Models of Escherichia coli O157:H7 Infection and Shiga Toxin Injection
Escherichia coli O157:H7 has been responsible for multiple food- and waterborne outbreaks of diarrhea and/or hemorrhagic colitis (HC) worldwide. More importantly, a portion of E. coli O157:H7-infected individuals, particularly young children, develop a life-threatening sequela of infection called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Shiga toxin (Stx), a potent cytotoxin, is the major virulence factor linked to the presentation of both HC and HUS. Currently, treatment of E. coli O157:H7 and other Stx-producing E. coli (STEC) infections is limited to supportive care. To facilitate development of therapeutic strategies and vaccines for humans against these agents, animal models that mimic one or more aspect of STEC infection and disease are needed. In this paper, we focus on the characteristics of various mouse models that have been developed and that can be used to monitor STEC colonization, disease, pathology, or combinations of these features as well as the impact of Stx alone
A Construction of Solutions to Reflection Equations for Interaction-Round-a-Face Models
We present a procedure in which known solutions to reflection equations for
interaction-round-a-face lattice models are used to construct new solutions.
The procedure is particularly well-suited to models which have a known fusion
hierarchy and which are based on graphs containing a node of valency . Among
such models are the Andrews-Baxter-Forrester models, for which we construct
