    Testing isomorphism of graded algebras

    Get PDF
    We present a new algorithm to decide isomorphism between finite graded algebras. For a broad class of nilpotent Lie algebras, we demonstrate that it runs in time polynomial in the order of the input algebras. We introduce heuristics that often dramatically improve the performance of the algorithm and report on an implementation in Magma

    Model-robust and model-sensitive designs.

    Abstract: The main drawback of the optimal design approach is that it assumes the statistical model is known. In this paper, a new approach to reduce the dependency on the assumed model is proposed. The approach takes into account the model uncertainty by incorporating the bias in the design criterion and the ability to test for lack-of-fit. Several new designs are derived in the paper and they are compared to the alternatives available from the literature.A-optimality; Bias; D-optimality; Lack-of-fit; Model-discrimination; Model-robustness;

    Photonic integrated circuit based FMCW coherent LiDAR

    We present the demonstration of an integrated Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave LiDAR on a silicon platform. The waveform calibration, the scanning system and the balanced detectors are implemented on chip. Detection and ranging of a moving hard target at up to 60 m with less than 5 mW of output power is demonstrated here

    Integrated Photonic Sensing

    Loss is a critical roadblock to achieving photonic quantum-enhanced technologies. We explore a modular platform for implementing integrated photonics experiments and consider the effects of loss at different stages of these experiments, including state preparation, manipulation and measurement. We frame our discussion mainly in the context of quantum sensing and focus particularly on the use of loss-tolerant Holland-Burnett states for optical phase estimation. In particular, we discuss spontaneous four-wave mixing in standard birefringent fibre as a source of pure, heralded single photons and present methods of optimising such sources. We also outline a route to programmable circuits which allow the control of photonic interactions even in the presence of fabrication imperfections and describe a ratiometric characterisation method for beam splitters which allows the characterisation of complex circuits without the need for full process tomography. Finally, we present a framework for performing state tomography on heralded states using lossy measurement devices. This is motivated by a calculation of the effects of fabrication imperfections on precision measurement using Holland-Burnett states.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure

    Comparing laser hybrid-integration and fiber coupling with standard grating couplers on Si-PICs

    We compare the simulated optical insertion-losses and fabrication-tolerances of a micro-optical bench (MOB) for laser hybrid-integration on the 220nm Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) photonic-platform to standard fiber-to-grating coupling. Our millimeter-scale two-dimensional finite difference time domain (2D-FDTD) simulation captures (i) aberration, (ii) reflection, (iii) diffraction, and (iv) wave-guiding effects in a single-shot and completely self-consistent way, indicating that light from a laser-diode can be coupled to the SOI photonic integrated circuit (PIC) with a 2.8dB insertion-loss at 1550nm. This insertion loss is just 1.0dB higher than for a standard Fiber-to-PIC grating-coupler, and is due to a combination of interface-reflections and aberration-effects from the micro-optical elements in the MOB. We use further 2D-FDTD simulations to investigate the alignment and manufacturing tolerances of the MOB, and show that these are compatible with practical photonic-packaging processes for mass-manufacture

    Six-beam homodyne laser Doppler vibrometry based on silicon photonics technology

    Get PDF
    This paper describes an integrated six-beam homodyne laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) system based on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) full platform technology, with on-chip photo-diodes and phase modulators. Electronics and optics are also implemented around the integrated photonic circuit (PIC) to enable a simultaneous six-beam measurement. Measurement of a propagating guided elastic wave in an aluminum plate (speed ≈≈ 909 m/s @ 61.5 kHz) is demonstrated

    Mycobacterium ulcerans disease: experience with primary oral medical therapy in an Australian cohort

    Get PDF
    Mycobacterium ulcerans (MU) is responsible for disfiguring skin infections which are challenging to treat. The recommended treatment for MU has continued to evolve from surgery to remove all involved tissue, to the use of effective combination oral antibiotics with surgery as required. Our study describes the oral medical treatment utilised for consecutive cases of MU infection over a 15 month period at our institution, in Victoria, Australia. Managing patients primarily with oral antibiotics results in high cure rates and excellent cosmetic outcomes. The success with medical treatment reported in this study will aid those treating cases of MU infection, and will add to the growing body of knowledge about the relative roles of antibiotics and surgery for treating this infection
