To characterize the demographic profiles, clinical features, radiological patterns and outcomes of treatment of HIV-infected TB patients, a descriptive study was carried out on 149 HIV infected TB cases diagnosed from 1998 through 2001 at Kota Bharu Hospital, Kelantan, Malaysia

Prevalence and ethnic distribution of helicobacter pylori infection among endoscoped patients in north eastern peninsular Malaysia

There exists significant difference in prevalence of H. pylori infection among different societies and ethnic groups, even within the same country. Malaysia with its multiracial population provided a valuable opportunity to study the racial distribution of this infection. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and ethnic distribution of Helicobacter pylori infection in an endoscoped population in the North Eastern Peninsular Malaysia.Pathology records of 400 consecutive gastric biopsies received at the pathology laboratory in a university hospital were reviewed. Demographic data of patients including their ethnic groups were documented. H. pylori infection was ascertained by histological evaluation of the gastric biopsies. Univariate and multivariate analysis were applied to determine the prevalence of H.pylori infection in the sampled population and the difference in prevalence among the ethnic groups. The overall H. pylon infection prevalence rate was unusually low at 13 .5%) (54 of 400) in this region. The prevalence among the races were as follows: Malay 6.6% (17/256). Chinese 24.1% (27/112) and Indian 2R.6(% (6/21). Gender and age were not significant risk factors for 1-1. pylon infection. However there was an increased risk of H. pylon infection in Chinese (OR= 4.46, 2.3-8.6) and Indians (0R=5.6,1.9-16.3) compared to Malays. The difference in prevalence of H. pylori infection between the three major ethnic groups concurs with other studies done in Malaysia. The reason for this interesting finding is uncertain and is suspected to be due to different environmental, genetic and socio-cultural practices in the various races

Towards quantifying the impact of non-uniform information access in collaborative information retrieval

    Get PDF
The majority of research into Collaborative Information Retrieval (CIR) has assumed a uniformity of information access and visibility between collaborators. However in a number of real world scenarios, information access is not uniform between all collaborators in a team e.g. security, health etc. This can be referred to as Multi-Level Collaborative Information Retrieval (MLCIR). To the best of our knowledge, there has not yet been any systematic investigation of the effect of MLCIR on search outcomes. To address this shortcoming, in this paper, we present the results of a simulated evaluation conducted over 4 different non-uniform information access scenarios and 3 different collaborative search strategies. Results indicate that there is some tolerance to removing access to the collection and that there may not always be a negative impact on performance. We also highlight how different access scenarios and search strategies impact on search outcomes

Dance to Music to: Development of a Kinect-based musical tone player, and exploring possibility of it in application to motivate mobility of people

    Get PDF
This report presents development of a Kinect-based application which can play different musical tones using inputs from body motions, and assessing its possibility to be used for encouraging mobility of people. The application is an interactive melody player system activated by human body motions that are detected by Kinect sensor. The application constantly captures six parts of a human body which are head, hip and both upper and lower limbs, allowing each part of them to play different notes independently over different MIDI channels. As a result, it turns the whole body into a combination of six musical instruments. The application was assessed by conducting user evaluation which included trial and interview. There were altogether 10 participants. They were asked to try testing the application for about 5 to 10 minutes, which was then followed by interview. Results of the interview suggested that this approach has a very high possibility to inspire people to do more exercises. However, further researches and studies are required to fully understand how we would be able to encourage mobility of people with the use of new technologies. Besides, the question of how intense it can inspire people to do more exercises and so reducing the risks of diseases such as cardiovascular related complications in obesity and diabetes patients has yet to be explored further

Beyond Traditional Collaborative Search: Understanding the Effect of Awareness on Multi-Level Collaborative Information Retrieval

    Get PDF
Although there has been a great deal of research into Collaborative Information Retrieval (CIR) and Collaborative Information Seeking (CIS), the majority has assumed that team members have the same level of unrestricted access to underlying information. However, observations from different domains (e.g. healthcare, business, etc.) have suggested that collaboration sometimes involves people with differing levels of access to underlying information. This type of scenario has been referred to as Multi-Level Collaborative Information Retrieval (MLCIR). To the best of our knowledge, no studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of awareness, an existing CIR/CIS concept, on MLCIR. To address this gap in current knowledge, we conducted two separate user studies using a total of 5 different collaborative search interfaces and 3 information access scenarios. A number of Information Retrieval (IR), CIS and CIR evaluation metrics, as well as questionnaires were used to compare the interfaces. Design interviews were also conducted after evaluations to obtain qualitative feedback from participants. Results suggested that query properties such as time spent on query, query popularity and query effectiveness could allow users to obtain information about team’s search performance and implicitly suggest better queries without disclosing sensitive data. Besides, having access to a history of intersecting viewed, relevant and bookmarked documents could provide similar positive effect as query properties. Also, it was found that being able to easily identify different team members and their actions is important for users in MLCIR. Based on our findings, we provide important design recommendations to help develop new CIR and MLCIR interfaces

Kesetaraan Gender pada Hubungan Pasutri Perspektif Mubadalah

    Get PDF
