    Shaping a Corporate Identity From Below; the Role of the BAT Bulletin.

    Existing studies that have explored the use of company journals as a mode of corporate communication during the early 20th century have invariably adopted an instrumentalist view of these publications. Company journals have been seen as a means of projecting to employees a top-down view of organisations. This article identifies a counter-example in which the origins of a company journal, the 'Bat Bulletin', are seen to arise as the result of an initiative stemming from the employees themselves. These antecedents gave the 'Bat Bulletin' a high degree of legitimacy amongst staff and provided the company with an important means of establishing a unified corporate culture across a disparate group international operating companies. Over time, however, the contents of the journal gradually became more conventional, and it was eventually closed down when the strategy of international integration ceased to be a desirable corporate objective during the 1930's

    Unsubstantiated Conclusions: A Scoping Review on Generational Differences of Leadership in Academic Libraries

    The academic library profession is experiencing a large turnover in leadership. To date, information on differences in the generational expectations about how to lead is scarce and the research is contradictory. This article presents a scoping review of the literature on generational expectations of academic library leaders. Based on predefined eligibility criteria, the authors searched twelve bibliographic databases and performed a broad web search. 5,435 articles were located and considered for inclusion, however, only four eligible articles were identified and included for analysis. There is little empirical evidence that generational differences are evident in the academic library setting or in individual leadership expectations. There is a lack of original research on generational differences in leadership in libraries, however, anecdotal and opinion literature is drawing attention to this topic in ways that cannot be validated

    Multiwavelength studies of MHD waves in the solar chromosphere: An overview of recent results

    The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric and coronal heating. Here, we review the recent progress made in characterising, categorising and interpreting oscillations manifesting in the solar chromosphere, with an impetus placed on their intrinsic energetics.Comment: 48 pages, 25 figures, accepted into Space Science Review

    US hegemony and the origins of Japanese nuclear power : the politics of consent

    This paper deploys the Gramscian concepts of hegemony and consent in order to explore the process whereby nuclear power was brought to Japan. The core argument is that nuclear power was brought to Japan as a consequence of US hegemony. Rather than a simple manifestation of one state exerting material ‘power over' another, bringing nuclear power to Japan involved a series of compromises worked out within and between state and civil society in both Japan and the USA. Ideologies of nationalism, imperialism and modernity underpinned the process, coalescing in post-war debates about the future trajectory of Japanese society, Japan's Cold War alliance with the USA and the role of nuclear power in both. Consent to nuclear power was secured through the generation of a psychological state in the public mind combining the fear of nuclear attack and the hope of unlimited consumption in a nuclear-fuelled post-modern world

    Prediction of elastic modulus plus anisotropy using X-ray and electron backscattered diffraction texture quantification and ultrasonic (Electromagnetic acoustic transducer) measurements in aluminum sheets

    Crystallographic texture is generally measured using X-ray diffraction, performed off-line using small samples determining near-surface texture only; electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) can also be used, but only samples relatively small areas. Ultrasonic methods determine elastic property anisotropy and texture, via orientation distribution coefficients (ODCs), and while there is substantial literature comparing ultrasonically determined properties with X-ray or neutron diffraction texture, there is little discussion about texture inhomogeneity (place to place in a sheet or through thickness) and sampling volume effects (X-ray compared to EBSD) on the accuracy of the correlations. In this article, the crystallographic texture of nominally pure aluminum and commercial aluminum alloy sheets has been determined by X-ray diffraction and EBSD and used to calculate the elastic anisotropy, which is then compared to ultrasonic electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) velocity anisotropy taking into account through-thickness texture variations. Significant and consistent spatial variability in texture occurs in the aluminum sheet samples (sheet edge to center and through thickness). Predictions of elastic anisotropy based on surface texture determination, as characterized by X-ray diffraction or surface EBSD, gave poor correlations with EMAT velocity anisotropy when the sample contained significant through thickness texture variations; however, accounting for this using multiple EBSD scans through thickness gave good correlations
