Assessment of Mosquito Diversity and Evaluation of Impact of House Treatment with DDT on Their Population in Amauro, Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria.
Malaria, a disease that has increasingly been ravaging human population still has no sustainable remedy. Therefore, mosquito diversity and impact of house treatment with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) on their population were investigated by the use of miniature Centre for Disease Control light trap (model 512) and WHO – approved compression sprayer in Amauro, Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria. A total of 9,114 adult mosquitoes belonging to Anopheles, Aedes and Culex genera were captured and identified in this study prior to the DDT indoor residual spray. Virtually all the living houses (93) in the area were treated with a total of 25kg of DDT active ingredient (concentration of DDT active ingredient: 10%). Mosquito populations reduced significantly (P<0.05) by 89.82% six months after house treatment with DDT. This shows that DDT insecticide is highly effective in controlling mosquito vectors. Mosquito species incriminated by this study suggest serious public health implications in the area.Key words: Mosquito, diversity, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, indoor residual spray, public health
Econometric Analysis of the Effect of Changes in Price on Consumption Pattern of Petrol, Rice and Bean in Owerri City, Imo State, Nigeria
It was hypothesized that changes in price could affect the consumption
pattern of petrol, rice and bean, their status as basic needs
notwithstanding. To test this hypothesis, primary data were generated,
subjected to econometric model and analyzed. Two-hundred residents of
different income groups who live in Owerri city, Imo State, Nigeria and
have used petrol, rice and bean for at least ten years and were not
less than thirty-one years old were sampled using standard method. The
pretest result of questionnaire validity and reliability was r = 0.726
and this indicates high reliability. A total of 90% strongly agreed and
agreed that prices of petrol, rice and bean are unstable in Owerri
City, Imo State, Nigeria. The results indicate that 70% of the
consumers strongly agreed and agreed that price affects consumption of
the products irrespective of need. This was a significant observation
too. In the study, availability of petrol, rice and bean affected
consumption in an urban environment.Grain quality was found a strong
determinant of consumption of rice and bean in the city. There was a
positive and non-significant relationship between price and consumption
of petrol, rice and bean and this shows that price is not the most
important determinant of consumption of all commodities. Necessity was
more important than price in consumption of petrol, rice and bean in
the city of Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. These findings are useful to
econometricians, policymakers, governments and households
Fishing effort statistics of the artisanal fisheries of the Cross River Estuary, Nigeria
Frame surveys were carried out in 1997 and 1998 to assess the effort statistics of the artisanal fisheries of the Cross River Estuary. These surveys covered the inner Estuary and the West coast of the outer Estuary. Fishing effort was taken as number of fishers, number of canoes, and types of fishing gears. A total of 64 fishing villages were surveyed (51 in inner and 13 in outer Estuary), and brought on map. The total number of fishers was 87,990 (39,090 in the inner and 48,900 in the outer Estuary). The mean number of fishermen per settlement was 1,294 (782 in the inner and 3,762 in the outer Estuary). The total number of canoes was 19,023 (10,303 in the inner and 8,720 in the outer Estuary). The mean number of canoes per settlement was 280 (206 in the inner and 671 in the outer Estuary). About 12 different fishing gears are in use in the area, with gillnets, long line, beach seine, traps, anchor (stow) net and purse seine being the most widely used. The fishing crafts were mainly non-motorized dugout canoes with the exception of the purse seine and anchor net canoes in the outer Estuary.
