    Explaining the magnetic moment reduction of Fullerene encapsulated Gadolinium through a theoretical model

    We propose a Theoretical model accounting for the recently observed reduced magnetic moment of Gadolinium in fullerenes. While this reduction has been observed also for other trivalent rare-hearth atoms (Dy3+, Er3+, Ho3+) in fullerenes and can be ascribed to crystal field effects, the explanation of this phenomena for Gd3+ is not straightforward due to the sphericity of its ground state (S=7/2, L=0). In our model the momentum lowering is the result of a subtle interplay between hybridisation and spin-orbit interaction

    Influence of blood viscosity on cochlear action potentials and oxygenation

    Impairment of the cochlear blood supply of guinea pigs was induced in order to study the effects of hypoxia on the cochlear action potentials. The oxygenation of the cochlear structures was decreased by perfusing the ears with polycythemic hyperviscous blood. The validity of using this model of cochlear blood flow was based on the propensity of the blood to flow in a laminar way. Because of the streamlined flow pattern, the blood supplied by the two vertebral arteries does not mix within the common trunk of the basilar artery. The retrograde injection of polycythemic hyperviscous blood into one vertebral artery will affect the ear on the injected side only. The high viscosity of the polycythemic blood decreases the rate of flow of blood through the cochlear vessels; the high oxygen content of this blood, however, avoids hypoxia of the cochlea. Therefore, in order to make the slowdown in the blood flow evident, its oxygen content was reduced to a `precritical level' before it was infused. Injecting normoviscous blood with a `precritical level' of oxygen caused a mild reduction in the scala media pO2 of 15.2% for the whole group of twenty animals. The hyperviscous blood with the same level of oxygenation, however, reduced the pO2 in the scala media to 53.3% of normal.     The evaluation of disability and its related factors among the elderly population in Kashan, Iran

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent literature indicates that developing countries in Asia are aging faster than other countries in the world and disability has become one of the greater public health concern in these countries. Pausity of published data on the elderly disability in Iran signifies the importance of this study designed to evaluate the disability and its related factors among the elderly population in Kashan, Iran during 2006–2007.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>A cross-sectional study is conducting on a multy-stage random sample of elderly people in Kashan ages 65 years and older. Volunteer participants were included by age 65 and older and excluded if they had the medical diagnosis of Alzhimer disease. The WHO DAS II was used as the generic disability measure in this survey. The original version of WHO DAS II was translated into Farsi according to the standardized guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation of health-related measures. Upon completion of data collection the descriptive statistics will compute all the variables. Chi-square, t-test analysis and ANOVA will be used to examine significant differences between the subgroups.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This is the first research protocol to study disability among the Iranian elderly population. Presently, 80% of eligible subjects have been selected. The results of this study will help to develop more effective protocols to assist Iranian elderly population with disabilities.</p

    ANKRD24 organizes TRIOBP to reinforce stereocilia insertion points

    The stereocilia rootlet is a key structure in vertebrate hair cells, anchoring stereocilia firmly into the cell’s cuticular plate and protecting them from overstimulation. Using superresolution microscopy, we show that the ankyrin-repeat protein ANKRD24 concentrates at the stereocilia insertion point, forming a ring at the junction between the lower and upper rootlets. Annular ANKRD24 continues into the lower rootlet, where it surrounds and binds TRIOBP-5, which itself bundles rootlet F-actin. TRIOBP-5 is mislocalized in Ankrd24KO/KO hair cells, and ANKRD24 no longer localizes with rootlets in mice lacking TRIOBP-5; exogenous DsRed–TRIOBP-5 restores endogenous ANKRD24 to rootlets in these mice. Ankrd24KO/KO mice show progressive hearing loss and diminished recovery of auditory function after noise damage, as well as increased susceptibility to overstimulation of the hair bundle. We propose that ANKRD24 bridges the apical plasma membrane with the lower rootlet, maintaining a normal distribution of TRIOBP-5. Together with TRIOBP-5, ANKRD24 organizes rootlets to enable hearing with long-term resilience

    Calibrating fundamental British values: how head teachers are approaching appraisal in the light of the Teachers’ Standards 2012, Prevent and the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act, 2015

    In requiring that teachers should ‘not undermine fundamental British values (FBV)’, a phrase originally articulated in the Home Office counter-terrorism document, Prevent, the Teachers’ Standards has brought into focus the nature of teacher professionalism. Teachers in England are now required to promote FBV within and outside school, and, since the publication of the Counter Terrorism and Security Act of 2015 and the White Paper ‘Educational Excellence Everywhere’, are required to prevent pupils from being drawn towards radicalisation. School practices in relation to the promotion of British values are now subject to OfSTED inspection under the Common Inspection Framework of 2015. The research presented here considers the policy and purpose of appraisal in such new times, and engages with 48 school leaders from across the education sector to reveal issues in emerging appraisal practices. Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of Liquid Modernity is used to fully understand the issues and dilemmas that are emerging in new times and argue that fear and ‘impermanence’ are key characteristics of the way school leaders engage with FBV
