A review of legalisation of illegal factories program: case study of Selangor, Malaysia
Selangor, one of the developed state in Malaysia has experienced enormous financial losses regarding land premiums and other taxes due to the existence of illegal factories existed before 2006. Besides financial losses to the state, the activity of these illegal factories also creates problems to the surrounding communities, especially in terms of environmental pollution and incompatible land uses. The Selangor state government has initiated a legalisation program in which the owners were given incentives to apply for approvals to legalise their factories. However, the participation of the owners was poor because half of them did not apply for planning approval and building plan. Thus, this paper attempts to discuss the current scenario of illegal factories in Selangor and the program created by the Selangor state to tackle the issue. The method adopted is through literature reviews and content analysis by collecting secondary data such as report and policy papers from the local and state authority, as well published newspapers. It is hoped that this paper can be useful for future references towards implementing legalisation effort of illegal factories
Objective: This study aims to assess the accuracy of the linear measurements of intrabony and/or furcation defect quantified by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and Methods: A systematic search of the literature was conducted by two authors independently from the PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO for full articles published in journals between January 2003 and March 2017. Eligible studies were assessed for quality and heterogeneity using the QUADAS-2 tool. A meta-analysis was performed to identify the accuracy of CBCT in the measurement of intrabony defects. The effect size was estimated and reported as the standardised mean difference (SMD). Results: A total of 105 titles and abstracts were screened. Of those, 11 articles met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review while only four were selected for meta-analysis. The overall effects of standardized mean difference and 95% CI was -0.03 [95% CI -0.67 to 0.60] with a x2 statistic of 0.49 with 3 degrees of freedom (p>0.05), I2= 0.01%. Conclusion: CBCT is highly accurate and reproducible regarding linear measurements for assessing intrabony defects with a weighted standardized mean difference of 0.03 mm. More randomised controlled trials are required to assess the accuracy of CBCT in assessing patients with periodontal defects.
Proses pemilihan artikel berdasarkan proses carta alir Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).
Assessment of gated community and guarded neighbourhood from public perspective
In recent years, Gated and Guarded community schemes (GACOS) have been gaining increased popularity among house buyers. This phenomenon can be attributed to the demand for heightened safety and security among house buyers. Scholars agreed that GACOS have managed to improve safety and security of residents but criticised the impacts of GACOS on community relationship in urban areas. GACOS are said to create segregation between the haves and the have-nots and are symbol of wealth and status. This study investigates the perception of non-GACOS residents towards GACOS to see their acceptance of the schemes. It is found that non-residents are favourable to the GACOS concept, mainly due to safety and security reason. They also do not associate GACOS to exclusivity and status
Recent advances on the preparation and application of graphene quantum dots for mercury detection: a systematic review
The mercury ion (Hg2+) is regarded as one of the toxic cations that is extremely harmful and dangerous to human health and the environment. With this growing awareness, it is imperative that facile and rapid sensing systems developed for the detection of Hg2+. Due to excellent sensitivity and selectivity, graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial, are attracting the attention of researchers as promising candidates as fluorescent probes for Hg2+ detection. This study aimed at conducting an in-depth review of recent advances into GQD-based materials as fluorescent probes in Hg2+ sensing. This systematic review was carried out by covering three main databases, namely, Scopus and Science Direct as the dominant databases, followed by Google Scholar as the supporting database. GQD-based materials encompassing bare GQDs, N-GQDs, B, N-GQDs, N, S-GQDs, N, K-GQDs, RhB-GQDs, Cys-GQDs, PEHA-GQD-DPA, Gly-GQDs, Mn(II)-N-GQDs, NH2–Ru@ SiO2-NGQDs and FA-GQDs were discussed thoroughly with regard to their synthesis strategies, along with their potential application in the detection of Hg2+. The doping of heteroatoms is envisaged to enhance the quantum yield and selectivity of bare GQDs. This review might unlock a wide range of opportunities for the application of various GQD-based materials as an adaptable, feasible and scalable approach to the detection of Hg2+
Backstepping control of nonholonomic car-like mobile robot in chained form
This project is attempts to stabilize an underactuated system based on the backstepping approach. The discontinuous time-invariant state feedback controller is designed for exponential stabilization of underactuated nonho-lonomic systems in chained form. System dynamic of the car-like robot with nonholonomic constraints were employed. The validity of the proposed ap-proaches is tested through simulation on a car-like vehicle using Matlab soft-ware
Scaffolding the Development of English Language and Communication Skills of Engineering Students
Teaching English in higher institutions is becoming more challenging in this globalised era. With the demand for communication skills in English as one of the important recruitment criteria, future graduates need to be equipped with sufficient English language and communication abilities relevant for their respective fields. This suggests that English language educators need to teach specialised English language such as engineering which may be beyond their expertise. Having trained as English as a second language educators, most of them may have limited knowledge in engineering. This paper is part of a larger research that explores the development of cross-disciplinary curriculum. This study examined the extent to which English language educators addressed the language needs of engineering students academically and professionally. A total of ten language educators from two Malaysian public universities participated in a focus group where they discussed their teaching practices and experiences in teaching engineering students. In addition, six English for Specific Purposes (ESP) practitioners from European universities were also interviewed to obtain information regarding the practices in teaching ESP at their universities. The results show that there is a gap between the development of engineering students' English language abilities in English language classrooms and its maintenance in engineering classrooms in Malaysia. The study highlights the key considerations to develop a framework that scaffolds the development of English language abilities and communication skills among engineering students within engineering education
